Résumé:
This volume examines architecture and urban design games that have been conceived and created by architects, urban designers, artists and game developers since the end of the 20th century, from doll’s houses to construction games and city building games, from SimCity to Block by Block. ''Serious fun'' examines games from both a technical and an architectural-critical point of view. As much attention is paid to the games themselves—the way they look, their construction and rules—as to their sociospatial implications, addressing the following questions: what perception of, and interaction with, the built environment do they express? What messages do the games communicate? How critical and innovative are the underlying concepts? ''Serious fun'' presents games and playfulness as tools worthy of earnest investigation, concluding with a triptych about alternative forms of representation and communication in architecture and urban design.

Résumé:
This publication focuses on a lecture given by Harun Farocki in March 1994 at the "Cine City: Film and Perceptions of Urban Space, 1895–1995" conference at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities in Los Angeles. Here, Farocki wove an associative web of thoughts on the relationship between film, architecture, material worlds, political economy, dwelling, sexuality, space, and time. Although an interest in buildings, spatial relationships, and power relations, as well as the interpenetration of technical media and urban space, was central to Farocki's practice, this is one of the few explicit explorations of the relationship between architecture and cinema. The (German and English) manuscripts of Farocki's lecture are supplemented by press material from the Getty Center's extensive film and lecture series. In their postface, the editors provide elements of interpretation and contextualization with regard to Farocki's previous and subsequent projects on spatiality and architecture.

Résumé:
This highly anticipated new volume in the Review series documents some two hundred largely unpublished buildings in Tashkent, Genoa, Tbilisi, and Casablanca. These cities experienced rapid development during the twentieth century, each offering its unique response to Modernism. Rather than merely providing a historical survey, this book uncovers the underlying logic of these cities’ urban fabric through an examination of their prevalent built heritage. Over four years, architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, together with teaching staff and students of architecture and design at ETH Zurich’s Department of Architecture, analyzed the featured structures to offer a wide-ranging array of original typological solutions for contemporary architecture and urban design.

In Deventer, the Netherlands, a routine real estate deal and demolition became the site of innovation and new intelligence in urban design. Not all of the endings were happy ones. This is the story of how architecture dissolves into the blurry middle ground between individual art practice and urban planning, and how the profession’s discourse falls apart.

Résumé:
The design of infrastructural networks—that is, roads, railways and any system that enables flow within a structure such as a city—is among urban design's foremost tasks. Around the globe, the awareness of enhanced infrastructure fluidity as a catalyst for economic development is rising. The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructure investigates how infrastructure design determines the organization and flow of the inhabited landscape—as an agency of enhanced mobility, as a design feature contributing to the character of a city and as a sound theoretical approach to a positive experience of collective space. These issues are explored in four chapters that catalogue these approaches, each chapter buttressed with key projects from the world's most important designers in this field, including Arata Isozaki, Paul Andreu, Xaveer De Geyter, Jean Nouvel and Ricardo Bofill. The authors demonstrate how the creative potential of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design is essential to the effective flow of infrastructural networks.
