Like its predecessor, Landscape 2 is printed in a first edition of 1,000 hand-numbered copies. This important new monograph spans five years of output, featuring 84 of the artist s most powerful recent imagery. Toshio Shibata is one of Japan s most respected contemporary photographers. His work has been the subject of exhibitions and publications throughout Japan, the United States, and Europe, and is included in such public collections as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Landscape 2 is beautifully printed in an oversized format on heavy matte paper, and bound in Japanese cloth.

This book examines the relationships between the work of ''Archigram'' and that of the British ''High-Tech'' architects, groups that were based in London and developing in the 1960s and 70s. While one group consisted of academics and artists known for their humour and eccentricity and the other were a group of deadly serious architects emerging to international proliference, this book argues that they shared uncannily similar impulses. There is the self-evident commonality of language: overblown machines, kits-of-parts of pieces and components, and a disintegration of building as object in favour of the constituent elements. Underlying both movements is a mutual, undying optimism in technological process and technological expression. Set within the rich history and culture of London, the book makes its comparisons by exploring central shared ideas: utopia, engineering, theatricality, infrastructure and narrative, and the iconography of war machinery.

Swiss graphic design and “the Swiss Style” are crucial elements in the history of modernism. During the 1920s and ’30s, skills traditionally associated with Swiss industry, particularly pharmaceuticals and mechanical engineering, were matched by those of the country’s graphic designers, who produced their advertising and technical literature. These pioneering graphic artists saw design as part of industrial production and searched for anonymous, objective visual communication. They chose photographic images rather than illustration, and typefaces that were industrial-looking rather than those designed for books. This volume looks at graphic language developed by such Swiss designers as Theo Ballmer, Max Bill, Adrian Frutiger, Karl Gerstner, Armin Hoffman, Ernst Keller, Herbert Matter, Josef Müller-Brockmann, and Jan Tschichold. The style of these artists received worldwide admiration for its formal discipline : images and text were organized by geometrical grids. Designed in accordance with modernist urban planning principles, with a lot of high-rise flats in a park-like setting, the Bijlmer experiment in social engineering was quickly overtaken by reality and the Bijlmer became notorious for its intractable social problems and exceptionally high crime rate. A mammoth, fifteen-year regeneration scheme (1992 - 2009) is set to change all that. Much of the existing high-rise is being replaced by less anonymous neighbourhoods of low-rise. It is here that Theo Baart and his family settled. Since their relocation, Baart has photographed the gradual transformation of an area of the Bijlmer defined by the radius of action of his two school-age children. Baart's interviews with his neighbours, discussions with policymakers and his superb photography provide a fascinating insight into the regeneration process currently taking place in the Bijlmer.

The modern world is dominated by flat surfaces. We write, print and project on flat paper or flat screens, which we stare at all day. We inhabit spaces constructed from flat materials. We play sport on level fields. Engineered planar surfaces have become so pervasive and fundamental to behaviour and thought that we barely notice their existence. But flat landscapes are also often disparaged, viewed as featureless, empty and monotonous. Metaphorically, to ‘feel flat’ is to be bored, dull, lacking energy or inspiration.
