Résumé:
Powder room, comfort station, privy, loo, dunny … the infinite variety of names we invent for this universal necessity, the toilet, is matched by an extraordinary variety of designs worldwide, from miniature log cabins in the Canadian wilderness to state-of-the-art cubicles in Japan, and from huts on stilts in the Caribbean to solar-powered sanitary ware in New Zealand. This light-hearted but highly informative photographic journey reveals the idiosyncrasy and inventiveness that characterize the construction of the humble toilet around the globe. Along the way, the reader encounters every possible permutation, from the traditional English ‘thunderbox’ to the Swazi thatched ‘beehive’ hut, and discovers the cultural and historical differences that can make our travels to other countries so enjoyable.

It is not easy to name an architect who can invent as much, and as poetically and rigorously, as Kengo Kuma. This issue of AV Monographs takes stock of his firm’s extensive output of the past five years through 32 works and 8 projects, presenting them in five groups. From the New National Stadium of Japan which is nearing completion for the Olympic Games to the competition the studio won recently to extend the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, via works like the Victoria & Albert Museum in Scotland, the Cultural Village in the Portland Japanese Garden, the refurbishment of a traditional courtyard-house in Beijing or the Camper Store in Barcelona. This taxonomy gives a good idea of the scope of his ambition.

International in scope, the book is an A to Z of ideas for the twenty-first century, from a pavilion in Argentina to a forest house in New Zealand, all designed to have minimal architectural traces--made with local materials that harmonize with the surrounding environment. An outdoor care retreat outside Oslo provides space where visitors can benefit from the therapeutic qualities of nature; a residence in Tottori, Japan, adapts with the changing seasons; a treehouse in Cape Town uses cylindrical towers that are elevated on stilts, offering views among the trees; and in Quebec, three geodesic domes were designed as part of an eco-tourism project to highlight the area's natural beauty. Each house is paired with photographs and plans.

Résumé:
The devastation of the Second World War gave rise to imaginations both utopian and apocalyptic. In Japan, a fascinating confluence of architects and science fiction writers took advantage of this space to begin remaking urban design. In 'The Metabolist Imagination', William O. Gardner explores the unique Metabolism movement, which allied with science fiction authors to foresee the global cities that would emerge in the postwar era. This first comparative study of postwar Japanese architecture and science fiction builds on the resurgence of interest in Metabolist architecture while establishing new directions for exploration. Gardner focuses on how these innovators created unique versions of shared concepts—including futurity, megastructures, capsules, and cybercities—making lasting contributions that resonate with contemporary conversations around cyberpunk, climate change, anime, and more.

Résumé:
Collectively referred to by the word tsuchi, earthy materials such as soil and clay are prolific in Japanese contemporary art. Highlighting works of photography, ceramics, and installation art, Bert Winther-Tamaki explores the many aesthetic manifestations of tsuchi and their connection to the country’s turbulent environmental history, investigating how Japanese artists have continually sought a passionate and redemptive engagement with earth. By focusing on the role of tsuchi as a convergence point for a wide range of creative practices, this book offers a critical reassessment of contemporary art in Japan and its intrinsic relationship to the environment. Situating art within the context of ecology and urbanization, this volume shows artists striving to explore and reprocess raw forms of earth beneath the corruptions of human activity.

Résumé:
Although Japanese architects have to contend with very particular constraints, from tiny plots in crowded urban contexts to ever-present seismic threats, their innovative solutions to the creation of space and stable structures, combined with their close attention to materials, technology and natural light, have resulted in homes that are internationally admired. This overview of fifty recently built Japanese houses includes projects by three Pritzker Prize-winners— Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban and Kazuyo Sejima—as well as by lesser-known emerging architects. Each house is clearly illustrated with colour photographs and plans, and is lucidly described by Philip Jodidio, who has travelled extensively around Japan and is deeply familiar with these projects and their creators. His book is a demonstration of Japan’s enduring commitment to design innovation.

Résumé:
This book presents a detailed history of Katsura, the seventeenth-century imperial palace in Kyoto, Japan, that is a pivotal work of Japanese architecture. First revealed to the modern architectural world by Bruno Taut, the great German architect, in the early twentieth century, Katsura stunned and then excited the architectural community of the West. Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, pillars of the modernist establishment, were fascinated by Katsura`s "modernity." They saw in its orthogonal and modular spaces, devoid of decoration, clear parallels to contemporary modernism, going so far as to proclaim Katsura a "historical" example of modernity. This book documents the palace in detail, combining newly commissioned photographs, detailed drawings, archival material and historical analysis. Essays by Francesco Dal Co, Walter Gropius, Arata Isozaki, Manfred Speidel, Kenzo Tange and Bruno Taut.
