"Spaces of Uncertainty" is a publication on issues of contemporary urban space, from the particular view of two young architects, Kenny Cupers and Markus Miessen. Their photographic and theoretic research constitutes a double movement, which opens up the traditional architectural gaze towards the social spectrum of urban spaces, while simultaneously offering an original theory of contemporary cultural practice. The issue of public space is one that crosses interdisciplinary boundaries and attracts high interest in the fields of architecture, urbanism, sociology and cultural studies. With Berlin as a case study for a globalised urban condition, the publication aims at a wide international public by providing a broadly conceived theory that approaches the city at the same time as a material phenomenon and as a social and philosophical idea. Public space in its traditional interpretations is unable to follow the heartbeat of today's rapidly changing city. Instead of adding force to an ongoing rhetorical discourse of loss, this publication acknowledges the existence of places beyond traditional definition. With a photographic essay on Berlin, it opens an unexpectedly contemporary view upon this agitated debate. Left with enormous amounts of infill and fallow land, Berlin is a city in which residual space and public space lose their definitions. As playgrounds for micro-political activities, permanent hiding-places or areas for temporary occupation, its residual spaces prove their necessity. Shy and unassuming, these very spaces of uncertainty show their value for public life in the contemporary city. His emphasis on strategy makes landscape fundamental -- he says that every architectural move is set in a landscape. Norman England, for example, was constructed as a network of strong points, in a strategy of occupation. The eighteenth-century grid cities of the New World reflect a strategy of reason. Our current strategy is the economic exploitation of the Earth, an intricately woven blanket of commerce that covers up a multitude of other possibilities, many other ways to treat the surface of the globe -- some of which are the landscapes revealed in this book.In a series of first-person narratives, reminiscent of his last book, the author pairs six landscapes, in order of descending scale from global to local, from the seven wonders of the ancient world to the condensed destruction of World War I's Western Front. In Canada the federal government built a network of buildings that provided newcomers with shelter, services, and state support. "Immigration sheds" such as Pier 21 in Halifax – where ocean liners would dock and global migrants arrived and were processed – had many counterparts across the country: new arrivals were accommodated or incarcerated at reception halls, quarantine stations, and immigrant detention hospitals. For the Temporary Accommodation of Settlers reconstructs the experiences of people in these spaces – both immigrants and government agents – to pose a question at the heart of architectural thinking: how is meaning produced in the built environments that we encounter? David Monteyne interprets official governmental intentions and policy goals embodied by the architecture of immigration but foregrounds the unofficial, informal practices of people who negotiated these spaces to satisfy basic needs, ensure the safety of their families, learn about land and job opportunities, and ultimately arrive at their destinations. The extent of this Canadian network, which peaked in the early twentieth century at over sixty different sites, and the range of building types that comprised it are unique among immigrant-receiving nations in this period. Since its invention, photography has been used to document and interpret the landscape. Survey photographers in the 1860s were the first environmental advocates, arguing for the U.S. national park system. During the first half of the 20th century photographers Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter were central figures in influencing American attitudes toward wilderness and conservation. This book traces the development of environmental photography beginning with Adams, Porter and others, and the next generation of landscape photographers - Robert Adams, Richard Misrach, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Patrick Nagatani, Mark Klett, whose works confronted the issues of landscape and the environment in less idealised terms. Shifting from the historical framework, the book presents new work by twenty-three photographers working in the U.S., the next wave of artists using the camera to engage the environmental issues of the day. Ranging from documentary to conceptual, the photographs touch on topics such as land and water use, the human place in the landscape, mounting consumer waste, industrial pollution, roof gardens and the green roof initiative, local food production, energy consumption, and the effects of industry on humans and animals. Katherine Ware's text offers insightful commentary on photography and the ways that environmental issues have been framed and advanced through the medium of photography. Since its invention, photography has been used to document and interpret the landscape. Survey photographers in the 1860s were the first environmental advocates, arguing for the U.S. national park system. During the first half of the 20th century photographers Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter were central figures in influencing American attitudes toward wilderness and conservation. This book traces the development of environmental photography beginning with Adams, Porter and others, and the next generation of landscape photographers - Robert Adams, Richard Misrach, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Patrick Nagatani, Mark Klett, whose works confronted the issues of landscape and the environment in less idealised terms. Shifting from the historical framework, the book presents new work by twenty-three photographers working in the U.S., the next wave of artists using the camera to engage the environmental issues of the day. Ranging from documentary to conceptual, the photographs touch on topics such as land and water use, the human place in the landscape, mounting consumer waste, industrial pollution, roof gardens and the green roof initiative, local food production, energy consumption, and the effects of industry on humans and animals. Katherine Ware's text offers insightful commentary on photography and the ways that environmental issues have been framed and advanced through the medium of photography.
