In the twentieth century, any American driver or passenger would stop at gas stations at least weekly, and not just for gas. Gas stations were also oases offering food and drink, car repairs, directions, maps and, importantly, bathrooms. Yet, beyond their appreciation as roadside novelties, their offerings to American culture, landscape and history have been little photographed. From 1978 to 1981, David Freund analyzed the culture, architecture and landscape of gas stations in more than forty states. The photographs show customers and workers in postures and actions peculiar to gassing up, or just hanging out. Architecture and signage, both corporate and vernacular, beckon passing drivers. Regional landscapes hold and surround gas stations, each with its own landscape of designed plantings or scrappy volunteers. Stations were also outposts for American networks other than petroleum, seen in telephone booths, mailboxes and powerlines. These and all that surrounds them spark recognition and recollection, accruing as elements of a nonlinear American narrative. While Freund’s primary concern is for his photographs to engage and surprise, he acknowledges nostalgia and uses it to imbue his subjects with a compelling sense of belonging. Of more than 200,000 gas stations in the United States at the time of this project, today they and their roles are mostly gone, existing now in memory and in this work. The film "Il deserto rosso" (The Red Desert) by Michelangelo Antonioni, produced in the industrial region around Ravenna, Italy, in 1964, is considered one of the most important works in contemporary film history. Because of its innovative use of color, uncomfortably slow pacing, and existential environment, the film has long held appeal to filmmakers, artists, and photographers. As a response to the film, a joint endeavor between the students at the Academy of fine Arts, Leipzig, led by artists and professors Joachim Brohm and Anna voswinckel, with the photo initiatives Linea di Confine and Osservatorio fotografico, Italy, were asked to create an exhibition of living photographers influenced by the film. The catalog features more than thirty photographers, all associated in some way with the university and photo initiatives. The photographers were asked to provide their reaction to the film along with their associated images. The project was then exhibited at SK Stiftung Kultur (Cologne, September 2017January 2018). Among the featured artists are Joachim Brohm, Guido Guidi, Valentina Seidel, and Francesco Neri.

In his houses, the boundaries between inside and outside are blurred, a reciprocal relationship with the landscape is established, and a tropical ideal has been created. The architecture is always expressive and each of Wilkinson’s houses is defined by a set of formal gestures that are both playful and practical: a tactile indulgence is always underpinned by a commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment. Landscaping, planting and the use of water are crucial to these houses, which draw upon the whimsy and decorative detailing of Arts and Crafts architecture, and the spatial freedom of such architects as Schindler and Wright. This monograph feature twenty-one of Wilkinson’s houses, built over the last decade. Each project is illustrated by colour photography, and is documented with formal drawings, concept sketches and project descriptions. An introductory essay examines the architecture in the context of 21st century Singapore, and documents Wilkinson’s background, influences and design philosophy.

The title actually refers to so-called "staircase wit," that concise French expression for the chagrin of missed retorts--those hapless comebacks one only ever thinks up belatedly (i.e. when already descending the stairs): "I should've said (fill in blank)!" etc. One of Demand's ironic allusions to his title is a new work titled "Landing," which shows the shards of broken Qing vases on a staircase--a mishap caused by a visitor to The Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge in January 2006, who stumbled on his shoelaces and crashed into the three eighteenth-century vases, smashing them to pieces. As ever, Demand combines conceptual rigor and exacting craft in his painstakingly re-created sets, with their eerie edge of artifice. L'Esprit d'Escalier presents an overview of his current work in 23 large photographs, plus a film project and an architectural installation specially prepared for his Irish Museum exhibition. Paul Hutchinson’s work (b. Berlin, 1987; lives and works in Berlin) conveys an intimate and unvarnished perspective, rendering the imperfections, incidental details, and human facets of urban culture. Fleeting moments and encounters often act as a base for his critical photographic practice. The central protagonists in his most recent project, titled Stadt für Alle (transl. City for All), are countless cranes, excavators, and construction signs. They are the tools that power the remaking of any city’s urban fabric – here Berlin mostly sets the example. Building pits constitute the foundation for farewells and new beginnings. Advertising banners for luxury developments vie against protest placards hanging limply on the façades of older buildings. The artist has compiled a pictorial atlas that prompts reflections on the transformation of the city and thereby gives form to the advancing gentrification, the constant feeling of threat and the increasing loss of inner-city street culture. Hutchinson’s writing complements the deft visual analysis of these processes: "The way you look at me, smiling while I’m losing my vision" is one such observation that, in conjunction with his images, opens up a space for interpretation and a probing inquiry into what urban life will mean in the future.

Today walking continues to offer a salient means for artists to challenge social, political, and economic orders through a radical remapping of civic space. In this book, Lexi Lee Sullivan traces the history of walking as an aesthetic action from the Dadaists to contemporary ramblers. Titled after Michelangelo Pistoletto’s performance Walking Sculpture, the catalogue features 50 color illustrations ranging from photographs of Yvonne Rainer’s street actions to Francis Alÿs’s fantastical processions, poems by Cole Swensen, and a new project by artist Helen Mirra, who produces poetic meditations on landscape, ecology, and locomotion. Sculpture, film, video, photography, and performance converge to address the multi-disciplinary practice of ambulation through the cityscape and the countryside. For those who hike; march in fundraisers, protests, or parades; walk the dog; stroll in the park; or commute daily, this catalogue will invite new thought into basic human movement.
