Résumé:
Wim Wauman, known for his still life photographs, invited fellow artists and cultural practitioners to contribute meaningful objects to his “Paraphernalia” project, resulting in a collection of 171 objects with which he created and photographed 21 compositions in his studio. These odd still lifes resonate with historical visual traditions and alchemy, asking observers to make individual interpretations and connections. In this publication, each object is connected to its respective donor and therefore his or her artistic strategy. It includes commentary from the artists about their contributions, a critical essay by Stefaan Vervoort about the project, and a personal manifesto by Wauman.

Résumé:
There are an estimated three trillion trees in the world, half as many as there once were. To honor and protect these vital organisms, a shift in perspective can help expand our understanding beyond simply appreciating trees' remarkable beauty to discovering the ways they are inextricably connected to our planet, our fellow species, and our spirits. Within these pages, biologist Joan Maloof offers forty distinct ways of encountering, exploring, and learning about a tree. Through engaging, impassioned essays, paired with watercolor illustrations, she invites us to get to know a tree by its leaves; through its rings; from its birds; by its song; and so much more

Résumé:
With the same intelligence and insouciant charm he brought to How Proust Can Save Your Life, de Botton considers the pleasures of anticipation; the allure of the exotic, and the value of noticing everything from a seascape in Barbados to the takeoffs at Heathrow. Even as de Botton takes the reader along on his own peregrinations, he also cites such distinguished fellow-travelers as Baudelaire, Wordsworth, Van Gogh, the biologist Alexander von Humboldt, and the 18th-century eccentric Xavier de Maistre, who catalogued the wonders of his bedroom. The Art of Travel is a wise and utterly original book. Don’t leave home without it.

Résumé:
The fifth in a series documenting the Edward P. Bass Visiting Fellowship in Architecture at Yale, this book chronicles the collaboration of Fellow Chuck Atwood, the former vice chairman of Harrah's board of directors, with Davenport Visiting Professor David M. Schwarz, assisted by Brook Denison and Darin Cook. Focusing on Las Vegas's lack of pedestrianism, they asked the students to investigate vital urban sites around the world and then apply theses lessons learned to the automobile-centric Strip. The students met with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Harrah's CEO Gary Loveman, and private-equity managers David Bonderman and Marc Rowman as they devised ways to transform the world's premiere themed playground into a livable and pedestrian-oriented city.

Résumé:
Drawings from the Gulag consists of 130 drawings by Danzig Baldaev describing the history, horror and peculiarities of the Gulag system from its inception in 1918. With every vignette, Baldaev brings the characters he depicts to vivid life: from the lowest "zek" (inmate) to the most violent tattooed "vor" (thief), all the practices and inhabitants of the Gulag system are depicted here in incredible and often shocking detail. In documenting the attitude of the authorities to those imprisoned, and the transformation of these citizens into survivors or victims of the Gulag system, this graphic novel vividly depicts methods of torture and mass murder undertaken by the administration, as well as the atrocities committed by criminals upon their fellow inmates.

Résumé:
This ambitious publication surveys Neel’s nearly 70-year career through the lens of her radical humanism. Remarkable portraits of victims of the Great Depression, fellow residents of Spanish Harlem, leaders of political organizations, queer artists, visibly pregnant women, and members of New York’s global diaspora reveal that Neel viewed humanism as both a political and philosophical ideal. In addition to these paintings of famous and unknown sitters, the more than 100 works highlighted include Neel’s emotionally charged cityscapes and still lifes as well as the artist’s erotic pastels and watercolors. Essays tackle Neel’s portrayal of LGBTQ subjects; her unique aesthetic language, which merged abstraction and figuration; and her commitment to progressive politics, civil rights, feminism, and racial diversity.
