Résumé:
“Copies in an Age of Network Culture” is interested in the possibilities in how network culture, an organism with an ever increasing speed, has physically changed architecture—an industry notoriously known for its extreme slowness. Today, the network not only connects the world, it reconfigures both culture and subjectivity by transforming the way we produce and share ideas. The 1976 book, The Selfish Gene, by Richard Dawkins defines a meme as a set of cultural data that acts like a genome—replicating, spreading, and mutating in response to the selective demands of the culture in which they develop. Yet, information when imitated is subject to variation, and no copy is in fact the same.

Résumé:
Belgian architect Xaveer De Geyter is the focus of this issue, which features a selection of projects from the past fifteen years. He began his career working with Rem Koolhaas at OMA, and started his own firm in the early 1990s. De Geyter believes architecture is about opening up possibilities: the potential of a site, the hidden opportunity of a particular situation, of a programmatic conflict. Among the featured projects are Hasselt’s Z33 Museum, Sint-Lucas School of Fine Arts in Ghent, a learning and innovation centre in Brussels, and a design for the International Olympic Committee Headquarters. Includes an interview with the architect by Sarah Whiting and essay by Philip Ursprung.

Résumé:
English architect, historian, critic and educator Kenneth Frampton received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale 2018. There is no architecture student that is not familiar with the book Modern Architecture: A Critical History (1980) of this renowned historian, nor with his essay ‘Towards a Critical Regionalism, Six Points of an Architecture of Resistance’ (1983). In this last text, Frampton searched for an alternative approach towards architecture by defining the specifics of topography, climate, light and tectonics as essential to the art of building. This issue of OASE examines the canonical role of Kenneth Frampton’s concept of ‘Critical Regionalism’, reaching beyond its traditional interpretation. It gathers contributions that propose a new genealogy of the text, critical re-readings and explorations by practicing architects and architecture theorists that evaluate the interest of Frampton’s ideas for contemporary architecture.
