Résumé:
Amsterdam-based landscape architect Michael van Gessel has been working with, rather than against, nature for the past three decades. He expresses his ethos by quoting the English author and landscape architect Joseph Spence: "Respect for the past, combined with a curiosity for what is and a feeling for what could be. This is the dynamo that starts the engine of the design." Accordingly, van Gessel embraces a diversity of projects, from private gardens to urban planning. He supervised the renovation of Amsterdam's Vondel Park, drew up the master plan to restore the landscaping around Utretch's Castle De Haar and managed to integrate the inner courtyards of the Ministry of Agriculture in The Hague into the urban fabric. This comprehensive volume places van Gessel's myriad approaches into context and illuminates his pivotal role in the formation of contemporary Dutch landscape architecture.

Résumé:
In the summer of 1970, the artist Les Levine arrived at the University of Toronto to take part in the installation of site-specific work on the quadrangle in front of the University's Hart House. The intended piece—construction materials hung from high-tension rope between campus buildings—was quickly stymied as Levine encountered a series of bureaucratic impediments on the part of the University staff. What ensued was played into the conceptual conceit the artist had envisioned for the project. By collating the correspondence, telephone transcripts, and visual documentation of the eventual installation process, Levine used the work to demonstrate how the university itself functioned as a system. Red Tape publishes this project, which had existed only as a dossier in the artist's archive, for the first time.

Résumé:
This publication from acclaimed architect and critic Mohsen Mostafavi traces a theoretical and visual narrative through architecture's relationship with the colour black. Bringing together a rich inventory of images, it illuminates this connection by considering parallel developments in global art practices with references ranging from Japanese screens to Rothko, Adolf Loos to Norman Foster, Hans Holbein to Derek Jarman. Alongside these renowned touchpoints, Mostafavi draws on a little-known and highly distinctive text by the Marxist German art historian Max Raphael, based on a collection of historic paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Contemporaneous with the evolution of black paintings by New York's Abstract Expressionists, Raphael's essay offers a drastically contrasting approach to the same multivalent subject. The book is completed by Rapahel's luminous essay, published in its entirety for the first time in an English translation by Pamela Johnston, as well as conversations with Swiss architect Peter Märkli, whose work with the colour black is informed by Raphael's writings, and Theaster Gates. By juxtaposing the present with the recent and distant past, this book provides a many-layered reading of the colour black ? and of colour more widely ? in relation to contemporary architectural thinking and practice.

How humans experience encounters with each other and the spaces inside and outside buildings is key to deciphering how combinations of context and environmental factors lead to various functions and typologies in different regions. From Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain, to Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, and Japan, the quest spans a variety of buildings and streetscapes, encompassing both the contemporary and historic. The result is a remarkable collection of photographs and analyses.

Résumé:
Like the flute melody from ''Hinterland Who's Who,'' the 1970s haunt Canadian cultural memory. Though the decade often feels lost to history, ''Hinterland Remixed'' focuses on boldly innovative works as well as popular film, television, and music to show that Canada never fully left the 1970s behind. Andrew Burke reveals how contemporary artists and filmmakers have revisited the era's cinematic and televisual residues to uncover what has been lost over the years. Investigating how the traces of an analogue past circulate in a digital age, Burke digs through the remnants of 1970s Canadiana and examines key audiovisual works from this overlooked decade, uncovering the period's aspirations, desires, fears, and anxieties. He then looks to contemporary projects that remix, remediate, and reanimate the period. Exploring an idiosyncratic selection of works, this book asks key questions about nation, nostalgia, media, and memory.

Using a contemporary and sophisticated formal language, Larsen and his studio have succeeded in extracting the essence of the new and in translating it into a consistent and convincing architectural idiom. His strength lies in simplification of form and function, evident in his use of archetypal elements and themes such as the house-within-a-house and the internal street. Brought to international acclaim with his design for the Foreign Ministry building in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the early 80s, Larsen's most recent works include Christiansbro and the Danish Design Center, both located in Copenhagen. Tadao Ando is one of the best-known and most influential contemporary architects with a minimalistic aesthetic and love of natural materials like glass and concrete--proof that less is more. This volume features ten houses and examines his approach to these designs. Viewed as a collection, these houses serve to demonstrate the wide range of Ando's prodigious genius through striking photographs. Characteristics of his work include large expanses of unadorned architectural concrete walls combined with wooden or stone floors and large windows. He uses simple methods to solve complicated and small spaces and turns them into spaces with breathtaking landscapes.
