In "Apollo's Eye", geographer Denis Cosgrove examines the historical implications for the West of conceiving and representing the earth as a globe: a unified, spherical body. Cosgrove traces how ideas of globalism and globalization have shifted historically in relation to changing images of the earth, from antiquity to the Space Age. He connects the evolving image of a unified globe to politically powerful conceptions of human unity. Cosgrove constructs a genealogy of global images from classical Greece and Rome to the present, giving special attention to the early sixteenth century, when Europeans circumnavigated the earth, relocated it within their understanding of the cosmos, and revolutionized its representation in models and maps. Each chapter focuses on specific images of the globe or whole earth, reproduced in a wealth of illustrations. When Yoshi Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima of the Tokyo-based firm Atelier Bow-Wow arrived at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design as guest professors, in the winter of 2016, they challenged students to deeply consider their surroundings and record their reactions as a large pencil drawing. In this public drawing time is suspended and expanded; futures, presents, and pasts converge; and the act of drawing becomes an instrument of dialogue and engagement. Tsukamoto and Kaijima later spoke about the project with K. Michael Hays, Eliot Noyes Professor of Architectural Theory at Harvard s Graduate School of Design, and reflected on representation, occupation, and the democracy of architecture. They unfolded their concept of an ecology of livelihood, wherein shadowless figures, objects, and spaces coexist with construction details. Explaining their belief in the behavioral capacities of humans, architecture, and nature, Tsukamoto and Kaijima revealed the generosity of spirit in their work, and the importance of pushing such capacities to their most yielding limits.

In this public drawing time is suspended and expanded; futures, presents, and pasts converge; and the act of drawing becomes an instrument of dialogue and engagement. Tsukamoto and Kaijima later spoke about the project with K. Michael Hays, Eliot Noyes Professor of Architectural Theory at Harvard s Graduate School of Design, and reflected on representation, occupation, and the democracy of architecture. They unfolded their concept of an ecology of livelihood, wherein shadowless figures, objects, and spaces coexist with construction details. Explaining their belief in the behavioral capacities of humans, architecture, and nature, Tsukamoto and Kaijima revealed the generosity of spirit in their work, and the importance of pushing such capacities to their most yielding limits.

Combining detailed historical studies with broad theoretical and philosophical investigations, this book challenges basic assumptions about the way early modern artists and theorists represented their relationship to the visible world and how they understood these representations. By analyzing technical feats such as anamorphosis (the perspectival distortion of an object to make it viewable only from a certain angle), drawing machines, and printed diagrams, each chapter highlights the moments when perspective theorists failed to unite a singular, ideal viewpoint with the artist’s or viewer’s viewpoint or were unsuccessful at conjoining fictive and lived space. Showing how these “failures” were subsequently incorporated rather than rejected by perspective theorists, the book presents an important reassessment of the standard view of Renaissance perspective.
