Résumé:
This book presents innovative examples of hidden architecture: buildings that are designed to disappear into their surroundings or hide in plain sight. In the city, hidden buildings are often designed to provide the occupants with privacy and protection from the busy world outside or they can be incorporated into the streetscape to free up space for public use. In the countryside, buildings should not spoil a scenic landscape, so they can be designed to become a part of it. Buildings can be buried underground, hidden amongst trees, covered with greenery or even sunk into the sea. They can be clad in mirrors to reflect their surroundings, disappear beneath an urban plaza or be hidden from view on top of another building. Each of these imaginative solutions offers a way for architecture to blend in rather than stand out. ''Hidden architecture'' tells the stories of projects from around the world that are cleverly disguised but still beautifully detailed and outstanding in their execution.

The use of solar energy in new construction has been growing rapidly, and in response to that success, interest in retrofitting the technology to older buildings is increasing. " Solar Design " features case studies of more than 30 realized projects, demonstrating how photovoltaic systems can be consciously and discriminatingly installed as structural design elements, and creatively integrated into historic buildings, monuments and existing urban landscapes. A survey of relevant technologies proves them increasingly compact and flexible.

Résumé:
The question "Do black landscapes matter?" cuts deep to the core of American history. From the plantations of slavery to contemporary segregated cities, from freedman villages to northern migrations for freedom, the nation’s landscape bears the detritus of diverse origins. Black landscapes matter because they tell the truth. In this vital new collection, acclaimed landscape designer and public artist Walter Hood assembles a group of notable landscape architecture and planning professionals and scholars to probe how race, memory, and meaning intersect in the American landscape. Essayists examine a variety of U.S. places— ranging from New Orleans and Charlotte to Milwaukee and Detroit— exposing racism endemic in the built environment and acknowledging the widespread erasure of black geographies and cultural landscapes. Through a combination of case studies, critiques, and calls to action, contributors reveal the deficient, normative portrayals of landscape that affect communities of color and question how public design and preservation efforts can support people in these places. In a culture in which historical omissions and specious narratives routinely provoke disinvestment in minority communities, creative solutions by designers, planners, artists, and residents are necessary to activate them in novel ways. Black people have built and shaped the American landscape in ways that can never be fully known. ''Black landscapes matter'' is a timely and necessary reminder that without recognizing and reconciling these histories and spaces, America’s past and future cannot be understood.

Résumé:
Tangible Traces proffers context, craftsmanship and tradition as antidotes to our seamless global landscape of bland architecture and design. The architecture firm Onix, spatial designer Frank Havermans, textile designer Claudy Jongstra, fashion designer Alexander van Slobbe and industrial designer Hella Jongerius share a common quest to imbue their work with unexpected meaning derived from consideration of local culture and context, rediscovery of traditional craft, use of quotidian materials and a fascination with chance and improvisation. Though they look to the past for inspiration, a fusion of state-of-the-art technologies and an unmistakably Dutch vision lends their designs a contemporary air.

Plants and architecture: two seemingly opposite elements. How can we combine them to plan future cities that are closer to nature? What synergies can we explore? Hortitecture seeks to discover the creative and construction potentials of vital plant material, and explores its applications in ecosystem services and urban food production. Through research at the intersections of architecture, biology and technology, IDAS (Institute for Design and Architectural Strategies) explores this topic with the aim of transferring the knowledge gained to the design of buildings. This book documents the projects, ideas and experiences shared by 33 international experts at symposia held at TU Braunschweig. Their critical reflections advance the awareness and expertise needed to develop a nature-based urban architecture.

Résumé:
''Intangible heritage'' presents both Marx’s work and teachings, compiling nine of his most seminal lectures written between 1962 and 1983. Illustrated with images of his mosaics and detailed maps, the volume groups Marx’s lectures into three thematic sections: in the first, he explores how botanical expeditions, such as his trip to the Amazonas in 1983, informed his thinking about urban landscapes; in the second, Marx traces facets of landscape architecture to their ancestral origins and discusses the role of subjectivity in the profession; in the third, he delves into society's responsibility to protect the environment. The publication also features texts from Marx’s collaborators and admirers, including an essay by José Tabacow, partner of Marx in his last projects, and conversations with art critic Jacques Leenhardt.
