Résumé:
In this book, Barbara Browning explores her attraction to tininess and the stories of those who share it. Interweaving autobiography with research on unexpected topics and letting her voracious curiosity guide her, Browning offers a series of charming short essays that plumb what it means to ponder the minuscule. She is as entranced by early twentieth-century entomologist William Morton Wheeler, who imagined corresponding with termites, as she is by Frances Glessner Lee, the “mother of forensic science,” who built intricate dollhouses to solve crimes. Whether examining Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, the Schoenhut toy piano dynasty, portrait miniatures, diminutive handwriting, or Jonathan Swift’s and Lewis Carroll’s preoccupation with tiny people, Browning shows how a preoccupation with all things tiny can belie an attempt to grasp vast---even cosmic---realities.

Résumé:
The first issue of ''Interlope'' honors the editorial plurality that the magazine claims: 240 pages, about thirty subjects. It includes portraits of designers and artists (Nicolas Di Felice, Ariana Papademetropoulos, Gaspar Noé...), musicians (HYD, Yeule, Bernardino Femminielli...), as well as a file of unpublished short stories by several writers revolving around vice (Oscar Coop-phane, Simon Johannin, Matthieu Peck...) Between two series devoted to the emerging English and French music scenes, "the fire that burns you", photographers-filmmakers reveal their vision of Kazakhstan and architects question the idea of black. Since, by definition, the underworld operates in the shadows, this issue focuses on those we hear about at night. Also this edition investigates what remains of provocation. In a world of semi-generalized apathy, isn't that a brave act, asks the editorial.

Résumé:
Nicholas Fox Weber, for thirty-four years head of the Albers Foundation, spent many years with Anni and Josef Albers, the only husband-and-wife artistic pair at the Bauhaus (she was a textile artist; he was a professor and an artist, in glass, metal, wood, and photography). The Alberses told him their own stories and described life at the Bauhaus with their fellow artists and teachers, Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as with these figures' lesser-known wives and girlfriends. In thisgroup biography, Weber brings to life the pioneering art school in Germany's Weimar and Dessau in the 1920s and early 1930s, and captures the spirit and flair with which these Bauhaus geniuses lived, as well as their consuming goal of making art and architecture.

Translated By is published to coincide with an exhibition at the AA, which gathers eleven literary writers and eleven literary places and subjects them to an act of immaterial translation – via the voice. The stories run through Ramallah, recollect turn-of-the-century Sofia, remember the spaceship-looking-Sheraton Hotel in Doha, wander through the 'Metaverse' and end at the end of the world in West Vancouver. Each of the authors invent or interpret place. Mundane, marginal, infamous, impossible. Together, the texts create a strange and beautiful territory that traverses distance and time. Writers include Douglas Coupland, Rana Dasgupta, Hu Fang, Julien Gracq, Jonathan Letham, Tom McCarthy, Guy Mannes Abbott, Sophia Al Maria, Hisham Matar, Adania Shibli, and Neal Stephenson, with essays by Charles Arsène-Henry and Shumon Basar.

Résumé:
Publication documenting two recent bodies of work by New York-based artist Gareth Long. Untitled (Stories) is a set of lenticular prints accompanied by the book series that pivots around a disjunction between the oeuvre of J.D. Salinger and the design of his books: the original Little, Brown & Co. book cover designs are a starting point for nine large-scale prints. An unfinished Gustave Flaubert novel is the central point around which the other works revolve. Bouvard and Pécuchet's Invented Desk for Copying is a suite of two-sided desk-sculptures that form the core of a related suite of projects. At the heart of both works lies a fascination with books as uniquely flexible vehicles of meaning, as complex compendia to be read, re-read and mis-read.

Résumé:
This collection of essays places travel at the center of Sebald's poetics and shows how his appropriation of travel in its myriad historical and cultural forms -- tourism, the pilgrimage, the walking vacation, travel as escape -- works to craft intertextual narratives in which the pursuit of individual life stories is mapped onto a wider European cultural history of loss and destruction. Following these cues, the contributors wander the various modalities of travel in Sebald's writing in order to discover how walking, flying, sojourning, and other kinds of peregrination inform the relationship between writing, reading, memory, and place in Sebald's work. At the same time, the essays uncover in innovative ways the affinities between Sebald and literary travelers like Bruce Chatwin, Franz Kafka, Adalbert Stifter, Christoph Ransmayr, and Joseph Conrad.

Résumé:
Inside The Rainbow reprints for the first time in English a unique compendium of Soviet picture books from the 1920 and 1930s. In the dark and dangerous world of revolutionary Petrograd, a group of Russian poets and artists came together to create a new kind of book for children. They dreamed of endless possibilities in a new world where children and grown-ups alike would be free from the bitterness of ignorance. For a time, when children's publications still escaped the scourge of state censorship, their books became a last haven for learning, poetic irony, burlesque and laughter. In this book 250 examples of illustration and design are complemented by some translations of poems and stories as well as texts from the victims, criminals and witnesses to the Russian revolution.

Résumé:
Pomodori a grappolo is a set of three interconnected books by photographer and bookmaker John Gossage. Each book gathers images made in Northern Italy and Sardinia between 2009 and 2011, and each includes a short text by Marlene Klein. The written pieces-two stories and one epilogue-have been created in response to Gossage's pictures, and reflect the 30 years that Klein has spent living and working in Venice. An unexpected approach runs through all the details of the books, from the way elements repeat, or don't, to the choice of materials and color. Since these three books are each a different trim size but include photos that are reproduced at the exact same size, the collective project functions as a study of the way that ink on paper can inform perception.

Résumé:
A riveting investigation of a beloved library caught in the crosshairs of real estate, power, and the people's interests by the reporter who broke the story. In a series of cover stories for "The Nation" magazine, journalist Scott Sherman uncovered the ways in which Wall Street logic almost took down one of New York City's most beloved and iconic institutions: the New York Public Library. In the years preceding the 2008 financial crisis, the library's leaders forged an audacious plan to sell off multiple branch libraries, mutilate a historic building, and send millions of books to a storage facility in New Jersey. Patience and Fortitude is at once a readable history of the library's secret plans, and a stirring account of a rare triumph against the forces of money and power.
