Résumé:
The first authoritative book on the history of the Glass House property—Philip Johnson’s fifty-year project of iconic modernist design, encompassing the remarkable buildings, landscape, and follies. From its completion in 1949 to the present day, Philip Johnson’s Glass House has drawn cognoscenti and the curious from around the world to New Canaan, Connecticut, to experience what might be the most photographed modernist residence in America. The property—an architectural playground on forty-seven acres with eleven Johnsonian follies dating from 1949 to 1995—is an icon of twentieth-century architectural and landscape design. The book chronicles how Philip Johnson and David Whitney, the architect and the plantsman, lived on the property for decades and used the landscape as an ever-changing canvas for their designs—the result of a unique synthesis of influences and ideas from across history and geography. New research reveals Johnson’s and Whitney’s interaction with the landscape and the evolution of the site from a five-acre parcel to a world-renowned gentlemanly estate for modern times. The Philip Johnson Glass House—beautifully illustrated with vintage and commissioned photography—will be a must-have for connoisseurs of architecture, landscape design, photography, and social history.

Résumé:
Album III is the book version of Luis Jacob's installation for 2007's Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany. The project consists of hundreds of images found and copied from various books, magazines and other publications, as well as the Internet. This exhaustive volume is 160 pages long and minimally designed, with only two to five images on a page--no text, no descriptions. The images speak for themselves. Coming from public sources, the pictures are grouped on each page formally, conceptually and intuitively, so that, for example, on a given page one might find a grainy black-and-white photograph of a pile of sausages in a butcher's window next to a saturated color image of a boxer's punching bag. The reader is invited to make his or her own associations and invent narratives through these visual puns. Sometimes humorous, sometimes bland and even sometimes devastating, this museum of found photography incorporates images that span from the early twentieth century to today.

Résumé:
Since the early 1990s, German photographer Michael Wesely has been inventing and refining techniques for using extremely long camera exposures to take uniquely compelling photographs. Through the use of filters and a very small aperture, yet one that is standard in a professional camera lens, he is able to diminish the amount of light hitting the negative to the point where he can extend the exposure many thousands of times longer than we would ordinarily expect. Some of Wesely’s pictures of the rebuilding of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, for example, in a series completed in 1999, were continuously exposed over a period of 26 months. The results of Wesely’s explorations are as surprising as they are beautiful. In 2001, as The Museum of Modern Art began to prepare for its ambitious construction and renovation project, a turning point in its history, it recognized in Wesely’s work an unequalled opportunity to artistically document that project. In August of that year, then, Wesely set specially designed cameras in long-term installations in and around the museum, choosing his locations for the construction views they provided. Nearly three years later, the images are complete, and their pentimento-like strata of transparencies and overlays render the construction project’s evolution in time as a dense and delicate network of forms and colors in space. "Open shutter" accompanies an exhibition organized by Sarah Hermanson Meister, Associate curator of the museum’s Department of photography. Included in the book are several images of the construction of the new Museum of Modern Art.

Résumé:
The photographs by Richard Misrach assembled in this volume are a stark, affecting reminders of the physical and psychological impact of Hurricane Katrina as told by those on the ground, and seen through the lens of a contemporary master. Rather than simply surveying the damage, Misrach-who has photographed the region regularly since the 1970s, most notably for his ongoing "Cancer Alley" project-found himself drawn to the hurricane-inspired graffiti. "Destroy This Memory" presents previously unpublished and starkly compelling material, all of which Misrach shot with his 4 MP pocket camera while also working on a separate archive of over 1,000 photographs with his 8 x 10 large-format camera. Created between October and December 2005, this series of images serves as a potent, unalloyed document of the raw experiences of those left to fend for themselves in the aftermath of Katrina. With no essay, titles or even page numbers in the way, the words on these homes, cars and trees offer a searing testament that continues to speak volumes.

Résumé:
The Public Collectors project, operated by Marc Fischer since 2007, encourages collectors of material culture — the kind that most museums won’t collect or exhibit — to “open” their collections to the public. Fischer’s perspective is intrinsically linked to his participation in underground punk and metal scenes in the 1980s, a sensibility that also inflects his practice as one-third of the celebrated artist collective Temporary Services. This collection meanders from paper ephemera to photography — including a visual tour of Chicago’s famed Swap-O-Rama. The contents also include adult Mexican comic books and postcards from outsider artist John Rininger. This publication is paired with documentation of the artist’s contribution to the 2014 Whitney Biennial plus an interview with punk ephemera collector Stephen Perkins, exploring the politics of collecting materials with little or no conventional cultural value.

Denise Scott Brown has shaped the course of contemporary architecture since the 1960s. She is particularly well known for ''Learning from Las Vegas,'' an enormously successful research project with her companion in life and work, Robert Venturi, and Steven Izenour, which challenged the way many architects saw the city. Widely cited and sometimes misunderstood, Scott Brown's insistence that we cast a critical eye on modernism ignorant of context, history, and joint creativity remains impactful today. The first book to focus exclusively on Denise Scott Brown, '' Your Guide to Downtown Denise Scott Brown Brown'' takes readers through her childhood in 1930s South Africa and her education in 1950s England, to her well-known work in photography, her writings and studies, and her work as an architect and urban planner on four continents.

Résumé:
n 1950, a young Vancouver architectural apprentice was handed a small house project that his boss was too busy to take on. The apprentice, Ron Thom, took the simple plan and rectangular foundation that had been roughed in, and transformed it into a groundbreaking work of architecture that gained national fame. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, but using local wood and paying careful attention to its verdant oceanside setting, Thom created a landmark for the new architectural movement known as West Coast Modernism. The client, Dr. Harold Copp, was himself a trailblazer, the first head of the physiology department in the University of British Columbia’s new Faculty of Medicine and a research pioneer. Generously illustrated with both vintage and contemporary architectural photography, line drawings, and photographs of the architect and residents, The Copp House is the story of a cultural landmark on the shores of Vancouver.

Résumé:
When it was completed in 1911, the Goldman & Salatsch Building in Vienna, commonly known as the Looshaus, incited controversy for its austerity and plainness. It represented a stark rejection of the contemporary preference for ornamentation, though its architect, Adolf Loos (1870-1933), had intended it to preserve Viennese tradition within a new modernist language. The heated debate that ensued among critics and the public set the project apart, distinguishing it as one of the most important and contentious buildings of the early 20th century. In celebration of the Looshaus's centennial year, Christopher Long, a leading authority on Viennese architectural history, brings to light extensive new research and careful analysis that dispel long-held myths about Loos, his building, and its critical reception. The book, which features new color photography and a vast array of archival materials in print for the first time, tells the remarkable story of the Looshaus's design and construction, the political and social restlessness it reflected, and the building's fundamental role in defining the look of modernism.

Résumé:
Archetypes features a recent series by Canadian artist David K. Ross, who works at the interface of photography, film, and installation. His images of architectural mock-ups, staged at night with dramatic lighting that isolates structures from their surroundings, demonstrate how these objects have become a charged form of proto-architecture. They also change how we view the practice of architecture by documenting and framing unseen aspects of its emergence. Built at full scale, these architectural fragments—to be removed from construction sites as buildings near completion—ensure that a project can be executed exactly to design, and they provide clients with a simulation of a building that leaves little space for speculation. The task of mock-up documentation is usually left to architects and contractors, who take quick snapshots for their reference during site visits. The book offers a platform to consider what it means to pre-construct fragments of buildings in all their complexity.
