Résumé:
"Dirty Old River" brings together twelve essays penned by Tom Emerson over the past two decades. Written on very different occasions as contributions to books or articles in magazines, they explore a wide range of topics through the lens of architecture. The book’s title is borrowed from the British rock band The Kinks’ cult song “Waterloo Sunset” to symbolize a journey through the interweaving of culture, imagination, and the built environment. Naturally, Emerson writes about architecture: how it is designed, drawn, and built. Yet he also turns his attention to other, wider fields, from the transformation of materials to the nuances of human creativity, the explosive early works of his celebrated fellow architect Frank O. Gehry, and the intimate craftsmanship behind the literary spaces of French writer Georges Perec.

Résumé:
Los Angeles–based Grey Crawford (born 1951) produced the photo series ''El Mirage'' in the southern Mojave Desert in 1975–78. Influenced early on by the forms of fellow artists Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella, and later by land artists such as Michael Heizer and Gordon Matta-Clark, Crawford's work features minimalist structures made of glass and steel. These abstract works focus on the artist's interventions in nature and architecture that seek to extend the limits of photography into land art and hard-edged abstraction. Crawford's day-to-day job working as a photographer for architects reveals its payoff in the work's smart presentation of its difficult subject. Besides the black-and-white photos that Crawford is famous for, this volume also contains Crawford's experiments in colour photography.

Résumé:
Architectural research is being redefined in practice. Whereas once the value of a piece of research was solely measured by the number of citations it received by fellow academics, shifting funding models and new societal concerns are forcing academia to question its structure and this mode of evaluation. At the same time a wave of practitioners and new types of institutions, such as RMIT in Melbourne and the London School of Architecture (LSA), have been recasting architectural education and theoretical speculation within practice, turning the traditional architectural studio into a learning environment that adopts and adapts academic models, and starts to use architectural research as a potential source of business intelligence, as a means for self-generating future commissions and speculative opportunities that sometimes even shift the terrain of practice.

Résumé:
For the past decade, the Los Angeles architect Michael Maltzan has designed multiunit housing in a city known for its proliferation of single-family residences. Working with the Skid Row Housing Trust, these projects advance new forms of supportive housing that address the services and infrastructures needed for their particular populations of inhabitants. For Maltzan, housing manifests an incredibly complex set of spatial problems—social, economic, political, typological, aesthetic, and urban—that recast architecture's role in framing the social relationships and individual challenges of everyday urban life. Social Transparency includes a recent lecture by Maltzan at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, as well as reflections from fellow practitioners—Amale Andraos, Hilary Sample, Florian Idenburg, and Níall McLaughlin—on this sustained engagement with housing and the city.

Résumé:
Nicholas Fox Weber, for thirty-four years head of the Albers Foundation, spent many years with Anni and Josef Albers, the only husband-and-wife artistic pair at the Bauhaus (she was a textile artist; he was a professor and an artist, in glass, metal, wood, and photography). The Alberses told him their own stories and described life at the Bauhaus with their fellow artists and teachers, Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as with these figures' lesser-known wives and girlfriends. In thisgroup biography, Weber brings to life the pioneering art school in Germany's Weimar and Dessau in the 1920s and early 1930s, and captures the spirit and flair with which these Bauhaus geniuses lived, as well as their consuming goal of making art and architecture.

Résumé:
This collection of a number of key essays by the New York-based architect and writer Mark Rakatansky proposes an innovative framework for architecture to enact the complex tectonic dramas of social and culture space. Following its title, the book is arrayed in three sections: Tectonic, Acts of, Desire and Doubt. In each, Rakatansky covers a series of subjects in a writerly voice that varies from the third-person narrative of the scholarly essays to the transcript of an email exchange with fellow academic Sarah Whiting discussing recent books by architect Greg Lynn. Transformational performances of architectural identity are explored in discussions of fabrication, social parametrics, building envelopes, spatial narratives, animation, migrancy, and in illuminating readings into the works of Louis Kahn, Robin Evans, John Coltrane, Giulio Romano and Andrea Palladio.

How do we break a culture of mistrust while suspicion of fellow humans, governments and capitalist enterprise seems to keep growing? Feelings of powerlessness are often cited as the main cause. We look for remedies in rules, contracts, assurances and audits, as well as in "good governance." But do they really provide trust? In ''Trust: Building on the Cultural Commons'', featuring drawings by Karina Beumer (born 1988), sociologist of art and cultural politics Pascal Gielen (born 1970) highlights the crucial role played by the cultural commons, shared "common" life and its customs, practices, knowledge and values. Trust is, after all, a matter of culture, of feeling and even of aesthetics. Broad societal trust begins with sharing vulnerabilities, and the commons, according to Gielen, provides space for that—breathing space and experimental space. How could a society and a policy further build on this?

Résumé:
"Le premier homme" is a semi-fictional documentary that tells the story of a mysterious man called Mr. B. living as a hermit in nature. In fact, after spending an entire life working tirelessly trying to survive and a few years from retirement, Mr. B. abandoned everything to lead a simple and authentic life. This man, crushed by an increasingly inhuman and deleterious system, found refuge far from his fellow men and developed extraordinary abilities there. He's able to control the elements, communicate with animals and even levitate. By refusing to participate in the exploitation of nature and humans, by adopting a humble and responsible attitude, he's rising against the excesses of neoliberalism. It’s a sort of David’s fight against Goliath - a highly topical issue - that he embodies in his own way and will lead without compromise when he will feel ready to get back to – what is paradoxically called – civilization.

Résumé:
A cat wanders, perches, and lounges in various spaces around a humble Tokyo apartment. It is perfectly tranquil in its surroundings, simply going about its daily life. In one image, the cat lays serenely amidst pot plants on the balcony, squinting in morning sunlight; in others, it balances precariously on the edge of the bath, snuggles beneath a sleeping bag, plays in a cardboard box, hides beneath an open umbrella. Here and there, evidence of the cat's fellow inhabitant in the apartment—a man, who also happens to be the internationally renowned photographer Takashi Homma—creeps into the frame. A knee, a foot, a shock of blonde hair, half of a face. There are artefacts of his life and practice too. Framed photographic prints draped in bubblewrap lean against a wall; a tangle of musical effects pedals make for colourful constellation against the cool blue of the carpet.
