Each participant was asked to bring a design-related artefact that represents their personal connection with the Swiss Style, all of which are presented in this volume. Through oblique excursions across New York City, he explores inaccessible, forbidden or disused places From military grounds in construction to prisons and airports, his odyssey also unveils, as a reflection, the insides of the New York Times’s printing presses. Claus Bury began his career as a jeweler, and the architectural sculpture he's been making since 1979 retains the rounded shapes, balance and smooth finish of his first trade. High Tide, Low Tide tracks Bury's most recent accomplishments, and, for the first time, includes excerpts from his sketchbooks and journals. Pages detailing his recent travels in Yucatan, Mexico appear alongside black-and-white photographs of Mayan temples. Photographs of Bury's farm works, made of bales of hay, show the influence of the Mayans' iconic geometric purity. Other materials illuminate the artist's latest curved and boned structures, many wooden, by comparing them to ships. And the production of his largest work to date, the 2006 "Bitterfeld Arch," a multi-story steel bridge to nowhere, is documented from the ground up--eight months from start to ribbon-cutting--and contrasted with the "Greenhouse for Thoughts," a 2005 wooden installation shaped like a house frame, with a forest of studs where the walls would be. Though Bury was trained in Germany and is based there, he has taught at RISD, won an NEA grant, and seen his work shown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

From the targeted demolition of Mostar's Stari-Most Bridge in 1993 to the physical and social havoc caused by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, the history of cities is often a history of destruction and reconstruction. But what political and aesthetic criteria should guide us in the rebuilding of cities devastated by war and natural calamities? This publication points to the potential for architects to play important roles in post-war relief and reconstruction. Charlesworth suggests that architects and design professionals have a significant opportunity to assist peace-making and reconstruction efforts in the period immediately after conflict or disaster, when much of the housing, hospital, educational, transport, civic and business infrastructure has been destroyed or badly damaged. Through selected case studies, Charlesworth examines the role of architects, planners, urban designers and landscape architects in three cities following conflict - Beirut, Nicosia and Mostar - three cities where the mental and physical scars of violent conflict still remain. This book expands the traditional role of the architect from 'hero' to 'peacemaker' and discusses how design educators can stretch their wings to encompass the proliferating agendas and sites of civil unrest.

In the councils and magistracies of the Venetian Republic, politicians argued intently over civic building projects in a manner curiously reminiscent of a modern democracy, taking advice from architects, engineers, and the public. Written by a leading authority on Venetian architecture, the book explores the complex dialectic between theory and practice; utopia and reality; and design and technology that infused these disputes. The bitterly contested debates are seen through the experiences of one particular Venetian nobleman, Marc'Antonio Barbaro (1518-1595). Recognized as a gifted stuccoist and draftsman, Barbaro played a prominent role in the discussions about major state building projects such as Palladio's church of the Redentore, the restoration of the Doge's Palace, and the erection of the Rialto Bridge. He was a distinguished statesman and orator, but his idealistic views about the rhetorical power of classicism frequently clashed with local technological expertise. Venice Disputed recounts not only his public role but also his private life, centered on the now-famous family villa that he and his brother commissioned. Barbaro's compelling story thus weaves together politics, architectural history, and private life in early modern Venice.
