Résumé:
Based in Los Angeles, film director and architect Liam Young’s work is situated within the fields of design fiction and critical design. ‘Planet City’ is an urgent examination of the productive potential of extreme densification in an imagined future where ten billion people surrender the rest of the planet to a global wilderness. In a vision that runs counter to our current world, the book describes a radical reversal of planetary sprawl, where humans retreat from our vast network of cities and supply chains into one hyper-dense metropolis. Not a techno-utopian fantasy, this work of critical architecture and speculative fiction is grounded in statistical analysis, research, and traditional knowledge.

Aside from the health crisis presented by the global pandemic, the economic catastrophe deepened peoples’ suffering and uncertainty in a tense climate of political polarisation. In his introduction, editor Luis Fernández-Galiano analyses the year’s main architectural events and key topical issues in a chronicle of four seasons. The yearbook presents a selection of 24 buildings that reflect the discipline’s current panorama in Spain, categorised as destinations, industrial spaces, cultural or social projects, edifices for education, and collective alternatives. Other features reflect on a year like no other, but with hope for the future.

Résumé:
The artist’s book “Detroit“ presents the contemporary urban landscape of this de- industrialized metropolis as an overlay of social and natural history. The catchwords “ruin porn” and “future city” are currently being used in the media to describe what was once celebrated as the “Motor City”. In her photographs and texts, Franziska Klose describes a landscape absolutely consumed by industry, its structure a manifestation of social inequality, despite all the conjurations of an imminent economic boom. The story of the “comeback” is set against land speculation and water shut-offs and contrasts with the emergence of a potential post-growth society based on urban agriculture and individual autonomy.

Résumé:
This book of photographs is the sequel to ‘A NOT B’ (2010), wherein quotidian items are again staged and captured through the camera’s unblinking eye. Yet the images are no longer set in the innocent atmosphere of the preschool years, when the world is read through analogies, but catapulted into a darker space of representation at the cusp of adolescence, against the backdrop of a hyper-commercialised world. The compositions create a distinctive play with logic, language, and meaning. Objects transform from their humble selves into abstract shapes discharged of meaning, or alternately into advertisements for themselves, charged with desire or bad omens of an ominous future.

Résumé:
This book is the result of eight years of research and the production of a series of photographs taken in 2013, 2015 and 2018 during Gianpaolo Arena’s travels through Vietnam. Both the photographs and the essays examine the complex bond between landscape and human civilization. In this sprawling sequence of urban growth, places and portraits we find continual antitheses of periods and customs that sometimes clash, at others meld. This project captures fragments of different rituals and ways of life of the contemporary Vietnamese society. The author offer a glimpse of Vietnam’s present and future cities between time and decay, culture and capitalism, folklore and propaganda.

Résumé:
Able to work anywhere we have a tortured relationship with the office today. Desperate to work again in physically shared spaces, we are also now questioning whether offices are needed at all. Offices themselves labour under intolerable forces too: 21st-century building regulations suggest redesigning them every seven-to-ten years, managerial strategies shift every five years, and employees cycle every two. As a result, offices are renewed with alarming frequency. With the future of our workspaces so uncertain, Back to the Office works overtime inside the revolutionary offices of the 20th century, and asks what endured from their architecture, their materials, and the work ideologies they embodied.
