Résumé:
"Isolated Houses" focuses on the outer frontier of Los Angeles where, 150 miles beyond the city, the built environment comprises a handful of rudimentary structures. The dwellings that dot the landscape seem temporary, even toylike. The work pays homage to those places where nature and culture intersect.

Ten years after its initial publication, "Weather in the city" is more relevant than ever. Prolonged heat waves are a source of many stress-related problems, especially in densely populated areas. Certain wind phenomena in cities have also caused issues in the atmosphere. Based on these factors, Sanda Lenzholzer shows how basic climatic processes work in an urban environment, and how they can be influenced by spatial planning and urban design. This revised edition draws on current examples in demonstrating how the comfort of the urban environment can be enhanced using modern techniques and new methods. The book is both a reference work and a source of inspiration for all those engaged in creating a liveable city: be they clients, policymakers, professionals or students involved in urban design, landscape architecture and planning.

As Italian architect, engineer and curator Carlo Ratti puts it, "Architecture has always been a response to a hostile climate … our creations have always striven to bridge the gap between a harsh environment and the safe, livable spaces we require. Today, that dynamic approach is being taken to a new level—as climate becomes less forgiving. We have witnessed firsthand how water and fire are attacking us with unprecedented ferocity." This two-volume publication accompanies the 19th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, titled "Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective." Contributions from more than 750 participants—including architects and engineers, mathematicians and climate scientists, philosophers and artists, chefs and coders, writers and woodcarvers, farmers and fashion designers, and many more—explore how effective methods of adaptation to our changing environment demand inclusivity and collaboration.

Résumé:
This book is a cutting edge study exploring the field of the conception and the tectonic making of place as it impinges in, and thus changes, the site in which it is set. It examines the attitudes to both nature and the built environment of the designer, the client and the society in which an intervention (be it architecture, landscape design or a piece of art) is made. The legacy of the Modernist view of nature and the environment is also addressed, and the degree to which such ideas continue to impinge on contemporary interventions is assessed. These topics are addressed through the methodologies of history, theory, philosophy and psychology. The book forges new collaborative ideas in an interdisciplinary way, including essays on architecture, planning, landscape and philosophy (particularly applied aesthetics).

Résumé:
Games like America’s Army, World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto and the music of Snoop 'Doggy' Dogg, Dizzee Rascal and Juan Atkins are fuelling the engines of globalization. As a result, popular culture is taking an ever firmer grip on our living environment and on our lives. In Mediapolis the authors sound out an urban environment pulsing to the rhythm of the popular media. They introduce a pop philosophy whose concepts include the Urban Container, 'scenius', sonic communities and nodal urbanity. Here technological, political, cultural, economic and even military developments meet head-on. Mediapolis makes clear what urban pop culture is and how it has influenced our notion of city. The words of the Italian Futurist Antonio Sant’Elia are as true today as in 1914 : "Every generation must build its own city".

Résumé:
Heritage occupies a privileged position within the built environment. Most municipalities in the United States, and nearly all countries around the world, have laws and policies to preserve heritage in situ, seeking to protect places from physical loss and the forces of change. That privilege, however, is increasingly being unsettled by the legacies of racial, economic, and social injustice in both the built environment and historic preservation policy, and by the compounding climate crisis. Though many heritage projects and practitioners are confronting injustice and climate in innovative ways, systemic change requires looking beyond the formal and material dimensions of place and to the processes and outcomes of preservation policy—operationalized through laws and guidelines, regulatory processes, and institutions—across time and socio-geographic scales, and in relation to the publics they are intended to serve.
