Résumé:
An adult woman haunted by her childhood muses on the foster system, institutions, and the medieval tale of a girl given to a witch. A genderqueer Brooklynite learns of their past life as a murdered sorceress. An uptight participant at a Northern California witch camp finds community in the kitchen. A professor uses magic to help students under attack by right-wing politicians. n this collection of manifesto, poetry, playscripts, and prose, the archetype of the Witch is honored and unpacked, poked and prodded, owned and othered. From work centered in antiquity to writing which illustrates how primordial occult energies continue to enliven our world today, "WITCH: Anthology" lays bare a wilderness of myth, magic, trickery, and power swarming beneath the surface of contemporary life.

"Doldrums" explores the therapeutic embrace of nature—the transformative power it holds in nurturing the spirit and facilitating self-reflection. California, specifically the San Francisco Bay Area, with its storied history as a beacon of prosperity and possibility, emerges as a familiar and compelling backdrop. It’s a place where people have always been drawn, seeking not only financial windfalls but also the promise of a better life—a westward pull that echoes through time. As I navigate the present, no longer burdened by the same fog of depression that led to the creation of this body of work, but rather fuelled by a hunger and longing for love and connection, "Doldrums" becomes a testament to the transformative power of time.

Résumé:
The Curious Mr. Pettena recounts various steps along a journey, through cities and wide open natural spaces, undertaken by the anarchitect Gianni Pettena at the start of the 1970s across the United States. Architect, artist and critic, professor of the History of Contemporary Architecture at the University of Florence and of Planning at California State University, Gianni Pettena (born 1970 in Bolzano) belongs to the original group—along with Archizoom, Superstudio and UFO—of radical Italian architecture. Without denying his background in architecture, he was convinced of the need to rethink the meaning of the discipline, just like the other “radicals”, using the languages of “spatial” research of Conceptual Art and American Land Art, instead of the traditional languages of architectural planning.

"Rift" refers to the eastern edge of the North American Plate where it meets the Eurasian Plate along the Mid-Atlantic Rift in Iceland. New crust is formed as magma pushes up from the mantle; the land along the rift is unstable and raw. Marion Belanger (born 1957) documents this land and its structures: geothermal electricity, hot pools, volcanic excavation sites, houses, new earth and cultural relics within the landscape. In "Fault", meanwhile, she photographs the shifting western edge of the North American Continental Plate along the San Andreas Fault in California, focusing on traces of the tectonic plate edge and the artifacts of our built environment upon them. Though characterized by earthquake activity, the landscape is often striking in its visual normalcy.

Résumé:
Skateboarders are an increasingly common feature of the urban environment - recent estimates total 40 million world-wide. We are all aware of their often extraordinary talent and manoeuvres on the city streets. This book is the first detailed study of the urban phenomenon of skateboarding. It looks at skateboarding history from the surf-beaches of California in the 1950s, through the purpose-built skateparks of the 1970s, to the street-skating of the present day and shows how skateboarders experience and understand the city through their sport. Dismissive of authority and convention, skateboarders suggest that the city is not just a place for working and shopping but a true pleasure-ground, a place where the human body, emotions and energy can be expressed to the full.

Résumé:
In 1920, as its population began to explode, Los Angeles was a largely pastoral city of bungalows and palm trees. Thirty years later, choked with smog and traffic, the city had become synonymous with urban sprawl and unplanned growth. Yet Los Angeles was anything but unplanned, as Jeremiah B.C. Axelrod reveals in this compelling, visually oriented history of the metropolis during its formative years. In a deft mix of cultural and intellectual history that brilliantly illuminates the profound relationship between imagination and place, Inventing Autopia shows how the clash of irreconcilable utopian visions and dreams resulted in the invention of an unforeseen new form of urbanism--sprawling, illegible, fractured--that would reshape not only Southern California but much of the nation in the years to come.

Résumé:
This book brings together 17 Kahn projects, ranging from private housing to commercial architecture, religious buildings, exhibition spaces, and government buildings. With the Jonas Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959–1965) Kahn created a workspace with superb functional and aesthetic qualities; the institute’s Minimalist elements radiate a sense of eternal beauty. The Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth (1966–1972) occupies the somewhat faceless city like an island of spiritual space, an effect that is achieved by simplicity in design and materials. Also, the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (1962–1974) and the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, National Assembly of Bangladesh in Dhaka that was finished after his death are buildings of monumental importance, demonstrating the vision the architect.
