Lazar Markovich Lissitzky is widely known as a Russian avant-garde artist who made significant contributions to abstract art in the 1920s. Until now his experiments with photography, photomontage, and graphic and exhibition designs in the 1920s and throughout the 1930s have not been documented and thoroughly analyzed. This book explores both the political and aesthetic aspects of Lissitzky's late multimedia work from his designs for the Abstract Cabinet to his death in 1941. The author and the two contributors give special attention to Lissitzky's intense collaboration first with German and then with Soviet photographers, designers, and filmmakers, and they discuss how his various personal friendships and acquaintances influenced the directions he took in photography and design. The book presents photographic works by Lissitzky and these other artists as well as some of Lissitzky's early non-objective art that foreshadows his experiments in figurative art. It also includes Lissitzky's correspondence with his Western colleagues and his wife Sophie Kueppers. This book will accompany an exhibition of Lissitzky's photographic works at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Germany, Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, and Fondaçao de Serralves, Porto.

''Genius Loci,'' meaning the protective spirit of a place, is embodied in the seven decade span of her work. Her landscape designs demonstrate her desire to create terrains that are less an interruption and more an amplification of what already exists on a site. Her training in modernist design and a desire to connect people with nature is immediately apparent in her landscapes. At a time when our relationship to the earth is of paramount importance, Oberlander’s projects reveal consistent and significant stewardship of the natural environment. Many of her designs—even those from 50 years ago—remain largely unchanged, testaments to her technical skill, research techniques, and judicious selection of flora. This bilingual book derives from an exhibition at the West Vancouver Art Museum, introduing projects by Oberlander, and presented in four sections devoted to playgrounds, social housing, public projects, and residential projects, showing photography of the places alongside her sketches, plans, and research proposals. The book includes contributions by Oberlander and the exhibition curators, Susan Herrington and Eva Matsuzaki.

Part artist's book, part exhibition catalog, this book chronicles Tauba Auerbach's multimedia syntheses of abstraction, science, graphic design and typographyTauba Auerbach studies the boundaries of perception through an art and design practice grounded in math, science and craft. Published in conjunction with the first major survey of the artist's work, this volume, designed by Auerbach in collaboration with David Reinfurt, spans 16 years of her career, highlighting her interest in concepts such as duality and its alternatives, interconnectedness, rhythm and four-dimensional geometry. Encapsulating Auerbach's longstanding consideration of symmetry, texture and logic, the title S v Z offers a framework for this volume's typeface, design and structure. Images of more than 130 paintings, drawings, sculptures and artist's books created between 2004 and 2020 are mirrored by a comprehensive selection of related reference images. The book contains original marble patterns created specially for the book by the artist on both the endpapers and the edges of the book block. The cover is lettered in Auerbach's calligraphy, applied in black foil on a silver paper. The typeface was designed by David Reinfurt with Auerbach expressly for this publication, and is based on her handwriting.
