Résumé:
Advocating an architecture that is "the opposite of global action," architect Angelo Bucci's work responds to the topography of the city and to its urban environment. In a lecture delivered at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Bucci discusses work designed with his firm SPBR, projects that span from the scale of the house to the city. His built work is here accompanied by an excerpt from his doctoral dissertation, which explores how the devices available to architecture—and the sectional manipulation of groundplanes in particular—can mitigate some of the inequities and exclusions built in to the fabric of the contemporary city. An essay by Kenneth Frampton frames these projects within the rich lineage of Brazilian house design and members of the Paulista school such as Paulo Mendes da Rocha and João Batista Vilanova Artigas.

The title is open to interpretation but it’s clear that the subject of the future of architecture is intoxicating. The field is full of tensions-between regionalism and globalism, virtuality and reality, functionality and aestheticism. "Architecture rausch" opens discussion on architectural training in this volatile time, and who better to articulate those challenges (as well as to challenge the limits of the profession) than the students who will face them in the 21st century? The book presents works by students from a studio at Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), Germany’s largest science and engineering school. Among the editors are faculty members whose work includes the Gallery for Contemporary Art Leipzig and projects with Daniel Libeskind.

Résumé:
Interior architecture today operates at the intersection between physical and mediated spaces, such as those of mass communications, digital platforms or visual arts. Considering any form of representation as potentially architectural, from writing to photography, drawing to cinema, Javier Fernández Contreras traces the origins of this process of hybridisation between space and media back to the Renaissance and addresses the role of interiors as an experimental laboratory of late modernity. Combining historic scholarship with bold hypotheses, his essay explores contemporary interiors as platforms of ‘expanded media’, examining their belonging to different places and temporalities, whether physical or virtual, close or distant, ultimately reasserting the role of interior architecture in the construction of contemporaneity.

Résumé:
The artist's house is a prism through which to view not only the artistic practice of its inhabitant but also to apprehend broader developments in sculpture and contemporary art in relation to domestic architecture and interior space. Based on a series of interviews and site visits with living artists about the role of their home in relation to their work, Cambridge-trained art historian Kirsty Bell looks at the house as receptacle, vehicle, model, theater or dream space. In-depth analyses of these contemporary examples including Jorge Pardo, Miros aw Ba ka, Danh Vo, Gregor Schneider, Frances Stark, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Mark Leckey, Monika Sosnowska, Gabriel Orozco and Andrea Zittel are contextualized by key artists of the 20th century such as Kurt Schwitters, Alice Neel, Edward Krasin ski, Carlo Mollino and Louise Bourgeois.

Résumé:
For Domicile Conjugal – a title borrowed from François Truffaut's movie of 1970 – Katagiri ( Sapporo, 1977 ) selects details from drawings made during the course of 2008. Her first published book focuses on architecture from a richly illustrated world built upon since 2003. Drawn freehand and without drafts, Katagiri's skillful pen drawings give birth to a dimension populated by people and intelligent animals, hanging in the balance of the playful physics unique to her craft. The staple ingredients of traditional Japanese art – mountains, trees, architecture and daily activity – are present but free of the structured compositions and realism. Instead we find a collision between the eccentricity of the west and the precision of the eastern tradition.

Résumé:
The first major work in English on Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990), this book illuminates the artist’s pivotal role within the landscape of twentieth-century modernism. Goeritz became recognized as an abstract sculptor after arriving in Mexico from Germany by way of Spain in 1949. His call to integrate abstract forms into civic and religious architecture, outlined in his 'Emotional Architecture' manifesto, had a transformative impact on midcentury Mexican art and design. Exploring Goeritz’s dialogues with lfigures among the Parisian and New York avant-gardes, such as Yves Klein and Philip Johnson, the author shows how Goeritz’s approach to modernism, which was highly attuned to politics and place, formed part of a global enterprise.

Résumé:
With his landmark 1919 painting The City, Fernand Léger (1881-1955) inaugurated a vitally experimental decade during which he and others redefined the practice of painting in confrontation with the forms of cultural production that were central to urban life, ranging from graphic and advertising design to theatre, dance, film and architecture. This catalogue casts new light on the painting (reproducing all of its studies together for the first time), the avant-garde use of print media, and Léger's fascination with cinema and architecture, and contextualizes a network of international avant-gardes - including Blaise Cendrars, Le Corbusier, Jean Epstein, Piet Mondrian, Amedee Ozenfant, Francis Picabia and Theo van Doesburg - in relation to Léger.
