Résumé:
"Multi-National city" follows three architectural itineraries through three cities and their histories. Like so many, these cities are caught within the feedback loops of globalization : Silicon Valley in northern California; New York's internal suburbias; and Gurgaon, a burgeoning corporate city outside of New Delhi. Each exhibits a distinct character, while together, they also form important nodes in what the authors describe as a single Multi-National city (MNC) stretching across the globe. The itineraries traced through them take the reader on a tour of the architectural monuments of corporate globalization-corporate campuses, high-rise towers, "public" atriums, call centers, and gated communities-that tracks their shared logic, their internal discrepancies, and their undeniable strangeness. Each itinerary concludes with an unannounced stop at an architectural project that applies the lessons of the Multi-National city to itself.

In the mountains of California or on the rooftops of New York, the feeling of utter remoteness can be triggered everywhere in the United States. Not only does the vastness of the country account for it, but also the absence of people. Days can pass without seeing a single human being. Signposts and mailboxes, however, indicate that these far-off regions are inhabited. Similarly, one can get lost in the concrete jungle and on the tarmac of cramped cities. Louise Amelie and Aljaz Fuis have explored these peripheries - in the literal sense of the word - with their camera, the fringes and outermost areas of both the American countryside and metropolises. The photos in this book portray more than a mere geographic separation from society. They capture a systemic or perceived isolation which is frequently transformed into a statement of independence, pride, and liberty.

Résumé:
The locations are diverse—New England, Long Island, Pennsylvania, California—and the architecture encompasses both traditional and contemporary vocabulary. What links them is their livable scale and the architect’s commitment to creating congenial spaces with a functional design. They are unassuming dwellings whose architecture moves easily to the background, supporting comfortable furniture, works of art from a variety of periods and styles, and the plantings and outdoor spaces that are essential to the composition. These houses display grace and style inside and out. They invite a full range of activities from formal to informal, from celebration to repose, from a solitary existence to a house full of children or guests. These houses have good places to read a book or write a letter, to take a nap, and to cook and eat with family and friends.

As a critic, stalwart nonconformist and champion of utopian architecture, Austrian architect Raimund Abraham (1933-2010) made one of the most significant contributions to contemporary architecture in 2002, with the construction of the Austrian Cultural Forum Building in New York. Following his tragic death in 2010, that year's Vienna Architecture Conference was held in his honor. This publication documents the keynote lecture, speeches and discussions held throughout the conference given by architects and artists such as Vito Acconci, Peter Cook, Kenneth Frampton, Peter Kubelka, Andrea Lenardin Madden, Thom Mayne, Jonas Mekas, Eric Owen Moss, Peter Noever, Wolf D. Prix, Alexis Rochas, Michael Rotondi, Elfie Semotan and Lebbeus Woods. The publication also includes a DVD of Abraham's now-famous last lecture, “The Profanation of Solitude,” given at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, only hours before his untimely death.

Completed in 2008, the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings of recent times. Its design, by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), combines the early Christian symbol of the fish with an innovative structure made of glass, wood and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior envelops the building, while a layer of fritted glass diffuses light and heat. Inside, the vaulted wooden ceiling soars 130 feet upwards, where an oculus opens out to the sky. The unique Omega window behind the altar was created with the help of new technology developed specifically for the cathedral: an image of the Romanesque relief of Christ from the tympanum of Chartres Cathedral was digitized and rendered as laser-perforated holes in an aluminum panel, creating a 60-foot pixilated image.

Marcel Dzama's 2011 films A Game of Chess and Death Disco Dance revealed fascinating new developments in the artist's iconography and range of media--perhaps most notably in his use of puppets and dioramas, which added more playful qualities to his imagery of conflict and terror, and underscored his dialogue with modernist artists such as Duchamp, Man Ray and Oskar Schlemmer. This volume, published for Dzama's exhibitions at Sies + Höke and Kunstverein Braunschweig, reproduces a wealth of new work, including images, stage sets, puppets, dioramas and sculptures from the films; a suite of ten drawings called Forgotten Terrorists (2008-2011), that draw on a photograph of the Palestinian terrorist and hijacker Leila Khaled; and other recent drawings, such as "Pepper Spray Saturday" (2011), an interpretation of the already iconic image of policeman John Pike pepper spraying Occupy protesters at University of California Davis.

In Girl in a Band, the famously reserved superstar speaks candidly about her past and the future. From her childhood in the sunbaked suburbs of Southern California, growing up with a mentally ill sibling who often sapped her family of emotional capital, to New York's downtown art and music scene in the eighties and nineties and the birth of a band that would pave the way for acts like Nirvana, as well as help inspire the Riot Grrl generation, here is an portrait of a life in art. Exploring the artists, musicians, and writers who influenced Gordon, and the relationship that defined her life for so long, Girl in a Band is filled with the sights and sounds of a pre-Internet world and is a deeply personal portrait of a woman who has become an icon.

Résumé:
''Designed Forests: A Cultural History'' explores the unique kinship that exists between forests and spatial design; the forest’s influence on architectural culture and practice; and the potentials and pitfalls of “forest thinking” for more sustainable and ethical ways of doing architecture today. It tackles these subjects by focusing on architecture’s own dispositions, which stem from an ecology of metaphor that surrounds its encounters with the forest and undergird ideas about Nature and natural systems. The book weaves together global narratives and chapters explore a range of topics, such as the invention of forest plans in colonial India, the war waged on the jungles of Vietnam, economic land use concepts in rural Germany, precolonial ecological pasts in Manhattan, and technologically saturated forests in California. This book is essential for landscape architects, urbanists, architects, forestry experts, and everyone concerned with larger environmental contexts and the ever-evolving relationship between nature and culture.

Résumé:
In the spring of 1966, the architects Umberto Riva and Luisa Castiglioni, the flaneur Enzo Muzii and the art patron Hans Deichmann hired a car in San Francisco in which to travel the length and breadth of the United States and photograph the architecture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Louis Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright and many others. They visited California and the South (Phoenix, Dallas, New Orleans and Atlanta) before heading up to Chicago and Philadelphia, only to reach New York after a month on the road. A Grand Tour comprising cities, architecture, deserts and encounters. An educational journey, but also a discoveryof America in its heyday, captured in magnificent black and white by a group of cultured European travellers. That journey became issue 17 of Zodiac, the international architecture magazine published by Olivetti, while the contact sheets containing the photographs of the four travellers has re-emerged only recently.

Résumé:
The first volume in a new series on critical concerns in the history of American art, 'Picturing' brings together essays by scholars who discuss the creation and consumption of images from the early modern period through the end of the twentieth century. Some of the contributions focus on art critical texts, like Gertrude Stein’s portrait of Cézanne, while others have as their point of departure particular artworks, from a portrait of Benjamin Franklin to Eadweard Muybridge’s nineteenth-century photographs of the California Coast. Works that addressed images and image making were not confined to the academy; they spilled out into poetry, literature, theater, and philosophy, and the essays’ considerations likewise range freely, from painting to natural history illustrations, travel narratives, and popular fiction. Together, the contributions demonstrate a rich deliberation that thoroughly debunks the notion that American art is merely derivative of a European tradition.
