Résumé:
Winding its way southward through the Philadelphia communities of Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy, as well as the verdant rural countryside of Gwynedd, Whitemarsh, and Wyndmoor, the Wissahickon Creek flows through a region of both unsurpassed natural beauty and some of the nation’s most exquisite residential architecture. The marvelous landscape that attracted early travelers and settlers became the setting for glorious estates that celebrated the connection between the natural and the built environment. From the mid-19th through the mid-20th century, three generations of prominent regional and national architects designed houses that have endured as magnificent examples of their own time, and remain eminently livable homes to this day.

"PA 24 : some among them are killers" explores unmanaged landscapes, territories that the author calls "wildernesses." These emerge from the cracks of mapping the spaces, at a variety of scales, that literally reside in the margins of error of our abilities to measure and calibrate space. From Yosemite National Park to the ubiquitous one-gallon milk jug, architect David Ross depicts the relationships between architecture and miscalibration and explores the spatial, tactile, and political ramifications of our reliance on modern devices of precision and overdetermination.

Résumé:
Bringing together scholarship in diverse fields including architecture, geography, folklore, anthropology, and urban studies, the seventeen essays in this volume confirm the transformations now occuring in the study of vernacular architecture. Moving away from a single vision of vernacular architecture that consisted only of handmade structures built in traditional forms and materials for everyday use, the scholars included in this collection are exploring a wider variety of forms and landscapes from company towns to grand expositions.

Résumé:
The twelfth instalment of the ‘Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series’ focuses on cartographer and landscape architect Hajime Ishikawa, who structures his ideas around the keyword “scale”. The topics in each chapter are therefore ordered from a wide to a local scale. Variations of the perception of scale allow for a more flexible conception of, for example, what defines a garden, or what can be made visible through both a wider context and closer examination. Using these methods, the chapters investigate topography, maps, time, boundaries and gardens.

Résumé:
Between 1985 and 2002, British New Brutalist architects Alison (1928–93) and Peter Smithson (1923–2003) transformed a modest vernacular cottage into one of the most remarkable residences of the late 20th century: the Hexenhaus. Hidden in the forests outside of Hessen, Germany, the "Witch's House" was the residence of Axel Bruchhäuser, owner of the furniture company Tecta, which had its factory nearby. The Smithsons completely redefined the relationship between the house and its surrounding landscape by means of more than 20 small additions, extractions, satellite buildings, furnishings and alternative routes. During this decades-long process, the couple kept close correspondence with Bruchhäuser, as evidenced by this collection of 99 handwritten postcards, collected here for the first time. Following Walther König's publication of "Hexenhaus: A house for a man and a cat" (2021), this publication offers a new, intimate perspective on this ambitious project.
