Résumé:
The German artist Katharina Grosse has fulfilled her dream of a tailor-made studio, a place large enough to accommodate her large-scale works and where an industrial atmosphere is combined with with soft light and neutral walls. In close cooperation with the artist, the firm Augustin und Frank Architekten planned the studio in Berlin’s Mitte neighborhood and completed it in 2007. The result is a compact reinforced concrete cube containing workrooms, storerooms, an archive, offices and living space. The contributors to this publication use Grosse’s studio as a springboard to explore the relationship between painting and architecture, and the role that studios play in the production of art. Numerous photographs show the raw architecture of the new building and the artist’s appropriation of the space. With contributions by Georg Augustin, Laura Bieger, Andreas Denk, Ulrich Loock and Philip Ursprung.

Résumé:
Widely considered to be one of the most influential American living artists, Carrie Mae Weems has developed a practice celebrated for her exploration of cultural identity, power dynamics, desire, intimacy and social justice through a body of work that challenges the prevailing representations of race, gender, and class. Defined by the use of photography, installation, film, performance and textile, her remarkably diverse and radical practice questions dominant ideologies and historical narratives created and disseminated within science, architecture, and mass media. Published in the context of her solo exhibitions at Barbican Art Gallery London and Kunstmuseum Basel, this book brings together a selection of Weems’ own writings, lectures, and conversations for the first time, providing personal insights into themes such as the consequences of power, artistic appropriation, music as inspiration, history-making, and the normative role of architecture.

Résumé:
"People make too much of architecture. I have a running quarrel with architects who overestimate architecture. Reality is at eye-level with people walking down the street." Born in 1923 in Budapest, Hungary, Yona Friedman is widely considered one of the greatest utopian visionary architects of the twentieth century. Currently based in Paris, he is just as much a sociologist as a designer of buildings, more concerned with the way people interact with their environments than monumental statements by an ego-centric creator. In this illuminating talk with The Conversation Series editor Hans Ulrich Obrist, he touches on the needs of the individual in heterogeneous urban societies, past and future projects, utopia, influences and metaphysics, revealing a wise and deeply-animated humanistic intellect. Known for his 1958 manifesto, L'Architecture mobile, Friedman's ideas have remained influential. His work was featured at the 2002 Documenta.

This catalogue is the first overview of the Israeli artist Absalon. Housed in plain white paper-over-board covers, it is comprised of two bound sections of differing heights, the back of which is glued to the interior rear card cover, in a spin on the ‘monograph as dossier’ format. Absalon built a considerable ouevre during his brief life (1964-1993), and this austerely designed volume effectively constitutes an Absalon catalogue raisonné. Absalon’s best known works, the Cellules, rewrite Cezanne’s “treat nature as the cylinder, the sphere and the cone” to read “treat architecture as the cell, the bunker and the turret.” Not that the Cellules are straightforwardly architecture: they equally evoke Minimalist sculpture, Matt Mullican’s maquettes, Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbauen and the Concrete sculptures of George Vantongerloo. But the model that the Cellules most overtly evoke is the monastic cell.
