Despite the negative ecological effects of overconsumption, overproduction and waste, the habit of replacing rather than repairing goods has persisted and even worsened over recent decades. To counteract this trend, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and ETH Zurich have been developing imaginative concepts for repairing a wide variety of objects, applying them both manually and by using digital techniques such as 3D printing. Beyond restoration, many projects develop and improve the repaired objects constructively, materially, or even in terms of design, lending them new value. This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of both new and old work by Karel Martens at Platform-L Contemporary Art Centre in Seoul, curated by Sang Un Jeon. In both format and content it offers a succinct overview of the world of the renowned Dutch graphic designer, who has produced an extensive array of works over the six decades of his career. The various influences he has absorbed during this period, combined with his socially conscious approach, have made him an idiosyncratic designer who brings together rational schemes and literary sensibility in a remarkable way. The publication was designed by Sulki & Min, former students of Martens from Yale University.
