Résumé:
In response to the contentious process surrounding the selection of a design for the World Trade Center site, the use of spectacular buildings to brand cities and institutions, and the dizzying transformations of the skylines of Shanghai and Dubai, public awareness of architecture and design has perhaps never been higher. At the same time, architecture itself is undergoing an identity crisis as it confronts fundamental issues: the effect of digital technology on design, the pervasive impact of global capitalism, and whether to embrace or resist popular media and taste. The New Architectural Pragmatism collects the most provocative, penetrating, and influential attempts by leading theorists and practitioners in the field to define what architectural practice should be at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Written in the aftermath of modernism’s utopian impulse and postmodernism’s detached playfulness, the essays gathered here express and critique a new spirit of cultural and political engagement with contemporary society. Interrogating the architect’s social responsibility, the contributors deliberate about how much we should ask of architecture and suggest that in the coming century, architecture must be at once flexible and robust, responsive and self-directed.

Mapping constellations between five specific pre-colonial cosmological examples extending from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa, this work reframes cosmology as a multi-dimensional and scalable practice of situated technologies and embodied cartographies. The resulting publication which was produced during the Jan van Eyck residency is a culmination of several years of research and exploration into precolonial cosmologies and spatial orders rooted in the African Sahel extending to the Horn of Africa. The (Incomplete) Cosmic Catalogue is an output of a research project that was initially commissioned by the Canadian Centre for Architecture as part of the multi-disciplinary research fellowship, The Digita Now: Architecture and Intersectionality in 2022.

Résumé:
It is impossible to overstate the importance of Lincoln Kirstein (1907-1996) to the arts in America. One of the rare talents who touched the entire artistic field of his time – ballet, film, literature, theater, painting, sculpture, photography, architecture – he is perhaps best known for bringing the choreographer George Balanchine to the United States, and for founding with him the supremely influential School of American Ballet and the New York City Ballet. Kirstein was also a persuasive and lucid writer who published over 500 books, articles and monographs. Now, in honor of the centennial of Kirstein’s birth, Eakins Press presents the most comprehensive bibliography ever of his huge literary output, annotated, indexed and categorized into Fiction; Poetry; Drama and Ballet Libretti; On Dance; On Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; On Photography; On Film; On Literature, History, Politics and other Subjects; and Memoir. This impressive work includes selected excerpts and a chronology of a life which, as Hilton Kramer wrote in the New York Times, “has helped to shape some of the most valuable parts of our culture.”

Résumé:
Barcelona-based Portuguese artist Carlos Bunga (Porto, 1976) is well known for his large scale installations in which he often uses fragile, perishable materials to build architectural structures, which he sometimes later destroys in performances or even before the exhibition opens. Built over weeks, his site-specific projects are made in direct dialogue with the surrounding architecture. This publication documents the special commission made for the Sonae/Serralves Project in 2012 for which the artist created a very large structure for the entrance hall of the Serralves Museum emphasizing the space’s verticality and functionality, in dialogue with Álvaro Siza’s architecture. Illustrated with Bunga’s projects in other artistic contexts, the book features texts by João Fernandes and Ricardo Nicolau (exhibition curators), Adam Budak (curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.), Marta Jecu (writer and researcher at CICANT Institute, Universidade Lusófona, Lisbon) and an interview conducted by María Inez Rodríguez (former chief curator at Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City) offering comprehensive insights into Carlos Bunga’s work.
