Résumé:
Founded in Florence in 1966, Superstudio challenged the modernist orthodoxy that architecture and technological advances could improve the world by creating alternative visions of the future in photo-montages, sketches, collages and films. The five members of Superstudio: Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Gian Piero Frassinelli, Alessandro Magris, Roberto Magris and Adolfo Natalini-were equally pessimistic about politics and its ability to solve mounting social, cultural and environmental problems. This Fall 2003 New York exhibition catalogue, drawn from Superstudio's archive and curated in collaboration with members of the group, will revisit its work and trace its influence on subsequent generations of architects. "Superstudio: Life without Objects" collects nearly 200 of the group's most important images, collages, storyboards and critical writings. White monuments crossing over entire landscapes and cities, vast grid groundplanes spreading over infinite beaches populated by wandering hippies: these are some of the more evocative images that consolidated their fame as vanguard architects. In 1972, MoMA invited them to participate in one of the largest exhibitions in its history, built around Italian design and architecture. With essays from Peter Lang and William Menking, the book is designed to provide the reader with the most detailed account of this avant-garde design group and their lively assault on modernism.

Résumé:
Accompanying the first major museum retrospective exhibition of Gego’s work in the US in more than 15 years, this expansive, definitive catalog charts the evolution of Gego’s singular approach to abstraction through organic forms, linear structures and systematic spatial investigations. Featuring nearly 300 images, including more than 160 sculptures, drawings, prints, artist’s books, textiles and installations made between the early 1950s and the early 1990s, this volume also presents 11 illustrated essays by experts in the field of modern and contemporary Latin American art that trace Gego’s artistic development across various mediums and disciplines, including her significant contributions to architecture and design; ground her practice in various art movements that materialized in Latin America, Europe and the US during her lifetime; and consider the pedagogical influence of her two-decade teaching career in Caracas. This essential publication advances an expanded understanding and appreciation of the artist’s work within the context of 20th-century modernism.

Résumé:
Sluminsider is a choral narrative that attempts to reveal the complexity of the slum of Mathare, one of the biggest shantytowns in Nairobi. The project of expansion of a street school, the Why Not Junior Academy, and the process of environmental improvement of the surrounding area, where a community agriculture initiative has been set up to replace an unauthorized dump, is the starting point from which to combine experiences and identities from very different disciplines, including architecture, design, agriculture, photography and video. This project is one of the case studies used for comparison and dialogue with the city of São Paulo and the São Paulo Calling research project, which examined the informal settlements of Rome, Nairobi, Medellin, Mumbai, Moscow and Baghdad. For six months, an exhibition analyzed the characteristics, differences and causes of informal settlements, developing six workshops in the field in different favelas of São Paulo and organizing size encounters that made São Paulo the world capital of the debate on transformation of contemporary cities.

Résumé:
Comprised of two steel and concrete towers outfitted with 140 prefabricated living capsules, the ''Nakagin Capsule Tower'' in Tokyo is one of the most iconic and influential architectural marvels of the postwar period. A touchstone of the Metabolist movement, the tower was designed by the office of Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa (1934–2007) and completed between 1970 and 1972. Each capsule was intended for single occupancy and came outfitted with its own ensuite bathroom, a foldout desk, a telephone, a reel-to-reel tape player, a Sony color television and a "porthole" window overlooking the city. In this volume of the MoMA ''One on One'' series, curator Evangelos Kotsioris delves into the groundbreaking design, construction, evolution and ultimate need for the demolition of this remarkable structure in 2022. It is published in advance of MoMA's exhibition of one of the original capsules, the first to be publicly shown in the United States.

Résumé:
"Trace elements" are minerals that exist in minute quantities necessary for the growth and development of cells. Exposure to excessive quantities is toxic, but without them our bodies would atrophy. They are the crystalline structures that support life. Over the past decade, Aranda\Lasch has focused obsessively on these structures as a form of both organization and expression for architecture. Their projects explore the interplay between rule-based systems and human ritual. In scale, this work lies somewhere between furniture and building, so that what is built, drawn, and projected gives human measure to procedural thinking. Published on the occasion of the studio's exhibition "Meeting the Clouds Halfway" at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Tucson, this book is a collection of recent explorations into modularity, craft, pattern, rhythm, material, and memory. Trace Elements documents a wide-ranging and yet sharply focused body of work from an office dedicated both to intellectual exploration and the honing of a distinct design sensibility.

Résumé:
Rolf Mühlethaler is an award-winning Swiss architect whose approach is characterized by a comprehensive analysis of local and historical contexts in combination with a deep conceptual understanding of structural elements, symmetry, simplicity, and repetition. Drawing on more than thirty years of experience—twenty with his own Bern-based firm, Rolf Mühlethaler Architekt—he carefully designs and crafts his buildings with an eye toward balancing these concerns, or creating a fragile order. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Architekturgalerie Luzern, Fragile Order—Rolf Mühlethaler presents the first comprehensive English-language look at Mühlethaler’s complete body of work. The architect has realized projects for both publics and private clients, including single- and multi-family residences, schools, studios, and office spaces, as well as conversions of historic industrial buildings. Richly illustrated throughout with photographs that capture all stages of the process, from design sketches to completed projects, Fragile Order—Rolf Mühlethaler will be of interest to architects, as well as structural and building engineers.

Résumé:
"Dutch architects in booming China" presents more than 80 projects (also on show in the exhibition of the same name) which are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Together, they present a fascinating and unique picture of Dutch design energy for China. Among them are: the State Television in Beijing (Rem Koolhaas, OMA), Guang Dong Museum in Guangzhou (UN Studio), Sleeping Dragon in Hong Kong (Atelier Dutch), Xintian International Kindergarten (NEXT Architects) and Guo Tai Bridge in Tianjin (Verburg Hoogendijk Architecten). The Shanghai-based architect Kok-Meng Tan discusses Chinese architecture and urbanism at the present moment and takes a look behind the scenes of Chinese architectural practice. Marlies Buurman records the experiences of the more than thirty Dutch offices working in China, and Maarten Kloos gives an introduction to the projects by Dutch architects who are working worldwide.

Résumé:
The Purist movement in art, founded by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (better known as Le Corbusier) and Amedée Ozenfant, championed a traditional classicism while it simultaneously embraced new technologies and materials. The only book on Purism, "L'Esprit Nouveau" is a key contribution to the study of classic 20th-century modernism in painting and architecture. The book serves as the catalogue for an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The title examines over 75 paintings by Le Corbusier, Ozenfant, and their closest colleague, Fernand Léger. At the heart of the study lies a single work: Le Corbusier's striking design of the Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau for the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, at which the term "Art Deco" was coined. The architecture of Le Corbusier's pavilion, along with its interior decoration - paintings, sculpture, furniture, glassware, rugs, and other objects - offers a complete summation of Purist aesthetics. Included here too is the full translated text of Le Corbusier's and Ozenfant's 1918 manifesto, "Après le cubisme".
