C’est aussi et surtout une rencontre entre un maître et des élèves – entre Le Corbusier et les étudiants de l’ECAL/École cantonale d'art de Lausanne. Imaginer puis produire des objets pour la Villa « Le Lac » de Le Corbusier, à Corseaux, tel est le projet conçu par Elric Petit, responsable du Bachelor en Design industriel à l'ECAL, et Chris Kabel, professeur à l'ECAL. Le projet dépasse vite le cadre d’un enseignement classique : le potentiel du site, l’inventivité mise en œuvre dans ce travail et la qualité des réalisations ont conduit naturellement à l’idée d’une exposition in situ. Les contraintes liées au lieu (proximité du lac, intégration du paysage) et à la nature du bâtiment (premier exemple d’architecture moderne de Suisse, monument historique d’importance nationale) se sont révélées une véritable gageure pour les étudiants et ont joué un rôle de révélateur de talents.

This unique book shows the results of this international research in its various forms: statistics, photography, text, visual collage and design proposals. These together give a tangible and insightful look at the mobile cultures found in a wide range of cities and countries, from Mexico City, Hong Kong and Guangzhou, to Djakarta, Budapest, the Ruhr Valley, Beirut, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Peking and Holland. The aim of the publication is twofold. On the one hand, to understand infrastructures and motorway culture by studying their different cultural and geographical contexts. On the other, to draw up an agenda for the future, one that establishes the role to be played by various design disciplines. Architect Jong Soung Kimm has his roots in Korea, but he spent his formative years as an architect in Chicago. He was educated at the Illinois Institute of Technology and after graduation he worked in the studio of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for over ten years until 1972. While working for the master, Kimm participated in, among others, the Toronto-Dominion Centre Banking Hal, the Reception Hall on the 54th floor of the T-D Centre, or the 1968 Mies van der Rohe Retrospective at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin; exhibition design proposal for the new Brown Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. All these projects deal with a unique Miesian mode of creating space which Mies van der Rohe had pioneered since Barcelona Pavilion (1928/29) and Tugendhat House (1928-30). Over the last twenty some years after his return to Seoul in 1978, Jong Soung Kimm has produced a significant body of built work as the lead architect of SAC International, which grew and developed under his participation. Some of the more significant work of architecture will be presented in this exhibition. Kimm’s work is characterized not only by his obvious debt to the principles of Mies van der Rohe, but also by Kimm’s sensibility derived from the cultural milieu he hails from. Eight projects will be shown that encompass museums, university buildings, a long span gymnasium building, two high-rise structures, one a hotel, the other a headquarters office for a major global enterprise. It is timely to present the work of an architect with multi-cultural background such as Jong Soung Kimm in our increasingly global architectural scene today.

Its embrace of new materials, of collage and assemblage techniques, of the designation of manufactured objects as art objects as well as its interest in performance, sound poetry, and manifestos fundamentally shaped the terms of modern art practice and created an abiding legacy for postwar art. Yet, while the word Dada has common currency, few know much about Dada art itself. In contrast to other key avant-garde movements, there has never been a major American exhibition that explores Dada specifically in broad view. Dada--the catalogue to the exhibition on view in 2006 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and The Museum of Modern Art in New York presents the hybrid forms of Dada art through an examination of city centers where Dada emerged: Zurich, Berlin, Cologne, Hannover, New York, and Paris. Covered here are works by some 40 artists made in the period from circa 1916, when the Cabaret Voltaire was founded in Zurich, to 1926, by which time most of the Dada groups had dispersed or significantly transformed. The city sections bring together painting, sculpture, photography, collage, photomontage, prints and graphic work. Tokyo Papers’ comprises a collection of 41 monoprints created by Dutch graphic designer and typographer Karel Martens between 2019 and 2020. In 2018, Martens received a package from artist-curator Pierre Leguillon that contained filled-in Japanese forms which he had found at a street market in Tokyo. Martens was intrigued by the collection of thin paper with a rectangular black-blue layer of carbon on the back. In 2019 he started to print on these back sides, but because the overprinting on the carbon layer caused unwanted damage, he switched to printing them on the front sides as well. “The closing image is related to Tokyo in a different way,” he explains. + A selction of portraits from the digital guest book, collected during the exhibition 'Karel Martens : Still Moving', at Platform-L in Seoul.
