"Hospital Builders" offers a comprehensive appraisal of 32 case studies covering significant healthcare projects in Britain and around the world. Each is thoroughly analysed with a critical description, plans, illustrations and photographs to provide creative information that is of assistance to architects, contractors and managers and all those involved in the procurement and subsequent occupation of the facilities. The ideas and examples are amplified through an exploration of the historical achievements, present circumstances and potential future direction of our modern progressive health service. Since 1998, Soziotope has been dedicated to the collection and exhibition of recent and historic designs and texts illuminating this cultural phenomenon. This particular catalogue illustrates the entire spectrum of this media-culture, from the genre's inception to its dissemination among a wide variety of social, economic and media-specific agents. More than a dozen authors take a scientific and entertaining look at this impressive body of work.

Résumé:
When a city is pursuing high-speed development and putting massive infrastructure into construction and operation to enable rapid economic growth and efficient urban operation, it will see, quite possibly, increasingly scarce land and resources. And much of its space for people and life lost to economic development, and worse still, the degradation of the environment and the loss of nature... This disequilibrium has set us thinking: what is exactly the purpose of development? Or is it a choice that's simply not worth making? This book includes the research and design project "Shenzhen 2030: Balance is More" by Doreen Heng Liu with NODE Architecture & Urbanism at an invitation to Audi Urban Future Award 2012, as well as interviews and articles by experts and scholars in the field of architecture and urbanism.

Résumé:
This publication, co-published with Ukrainian platform CANactions, brings together wide-ranging essays on the subject of post-war reconstruction. Produced in the light of the current invasion of Ukraine, it covers a spectrum of historical examples and geographic contexts to navigate the challenges and opportunities that define post-war reconstruction and war-related issues within the field of architecture. Considering urban planning, education, building materials, and innovative spatial relations, it centres around the human experience of the built environment in the aftermath of war. With a preface by editor Bohdan Kryzhanovsky, this reader presents theoretical and practical explorations of an urgently timely topic, offering a basis for wider conversation as well as a handbook of ideas for architects and planners and a pragmatic guide for shaping the future of Ukrainian cities.

Résumé:
Philip K. Dick, one of the most prolific and visionary authors of the 20th century, crafted compelling visions of possible futures and dystopian realities teeming with humans, artificial intelligences, and more. Yet, the Dickian universe is more than just its characters—it’s a realm intricately built with technological devices, machines, and objects entirely conceived by this brilliant mind. How did Philip K. Dick envision these technologies, and through them, the future? And now, decades after his time, how should we perceive and interpret these tools? More intriguingly, how can we decode and reconstruct the creative process that led to the creation and "materialization" of these devices? Grounded in a multidisciplinary framework, this volume explores alternative designs and projects for some of the non-existing technologies described in Philip K. Dick’s oeuvre.

Résumé:
"Old materials, new climate: Traditional building materials in a changing world" is an accessible guidebook to understanding historic materials – how they were traditionally made, how they survived the test of time, and how changes in climate are now impacting materials in new ways. Protecting historic buildings from a rapidly changing and unpredictable climate requires an understanding of how climate affects weather and how weather affects the durability of the most widely used traditional materials – wood, adobe, brick, lime, concrete, metal, and paint. This resource examines how gradual and dramatic changes in climate threaten to accelerate normal weathering and presents strategies to safeguard historic materials for future generations. Illustrated case studies explore how weather is affecting materials in specific historic buildings in climate zones in the United States and across the globe.

Résumé:
This book takes the reader on a tour of the concept behind the Ulm School, its 15 years of life and its legacy. The look at the past also follows the long path taken by German design, starting with the Bauhaus, before emigrating to the USA and eventually returning to its roots. The authors illustrate the role the School continues to play by pointing out everyday products designed by HfG teachers and alumni, e.g the Lufthansa corporate design and the ICE train, to name but two examples. There is also a look at some visionary projects that the School never realized. On the theoretical level, the book begins and concludes with a discussion of international modernism in philosophy and design, culminating in the question of its future, especially in terms of architecture and our environment.

Berlin, the Electropolis: Buildings of electricity supply, which have provided the metropolis with power for more than 100 years, catch one's eye all over the city. Architecturally and aesthetically, they are still impressive, but technical and economic progress has made many such works redundant today. Consequently, innovative concepts are needed to uncover the huge potential of these materpieces of industrial architecture for new scenarios of use. New Power presents more than 20 buildings that are available for re-use. Besides well-known transformer stations designed by Franz Heinrich Schwechten and Hans Heinrich Müller, high-quality architectural projects from the 50s and 60s are also introduced here. In addition, examples of successful re-use during recent years indicate the diversity of projects that can secure the buildings of the Electropolis a rewarding future.

Résumé:
To open its Frontiers of Architecture series, Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art chose the engineer, innovative thinker and writer, Cecil Balmond, honoring him with an exhibition of projects past, present and future. This exhibition catalogue, covered in a clear vinyl slipcase, includes loose, abstract sketches, installation photographs and digital renderings of Balmond's various projects--exposing Balmond's varied sources of inspiration, thoughts, working methods and processes. For example, there is a section on his collaboration with the artist Anish Kapoor which documents the 2002 installation of a giant red gramophone-shaped fabric tube at Tate Modern in London. With his unconventional approach to structural engineering, Balmond is an indispensable sparring partner for some of the most challenging and innovative architects of our day, including Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhaas, Alvaro Siza and Daniel Libeskind.
