Artists' representations of gardens have been organized first to highlight design concepts and individual features, then to focus on historic gardens and parks, and finally to survey the activities within those settings. Among the earliest works included is an engraving of a drawing made in 1570 by Pieter Bruegel the Elder of a garden being vigorously cultivated by many workers. Two centuries later, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Jean-Honore Fragonard represented the Villa d'Este at Tivoli in a state of neglected grandeur; Hubert Robert's painting of Mereville depicted a garden he helped design. By 1900 Eugene Atget's photographs of Versailles and Camille Pissarro's paintings of the Tuileries convey the enduring structure of French formal gardens. In contrast, American artists Maurice Prendergast, John Singer Sargent, and James McNeill Whistler depicted the pleasures of social activities in that setting. Photographs by Michael Kenna and Bruce Davidson offer contemporary perspectives on these issues.

Maria Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo exhibited at the Venice Biennial in 2004 and 2008, and was honored by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2012. That same year she won a gold medal for her life’s work at the Milan Triennial, and has been nominated twice for the Mies van der Rohe Prize. Nevertheless, she’s still considered an insider’s tip. She lives in Vittoria, a small city in southern Sicily, where she realizes the majority of her architecture, including many transformations of historical buildings, single and multiple-family housing, or projects such as the control tower in Marina di Ragusa. Grasso Cannizzo’s special design methods are based on her analyses of the urban context and the landscape, as well as her examination of the specific “story” behind each project. She translates the knowledge gained into minimal, self-aware, and sometimes radical concepts, which are ultimately always open to any changes that life and the passage of time may bring. At the same time, this first comprehensive monograph is also a conceptual manifesto by Grasso Cannizzo. Collected in a black box, loose prints provide insight into her most important buildings and make it possible to see the architect’s general design methods.

An architecture that becomes an urban semiosphere, surpassing its constructing limits and becoming a producer of immaterial qualities that change over time. […] Today’s urban condition is made up of services, information technologies networks, product systems, environmental componential practice, microclimates, commercial information, and above all perceptive structures that produce systems of sensorial and intelligent tunnels that are contained within architecture, but cannot be represented by architecture’s figurative codes. […] It’s not the first time that architecture attempts to go ‘beyond architecture’, but in the twenty-first century this utopia seems to be for the most part realized within the contemporary city.” This is a long essay comprising a decade of reflections and designs, in an attempt to reconcile conceptual reflections on architecture and the contemporary city, with a constant inclination towards a vision for the future. Architecture and landscape architecture are not only a matter of public interest but they are ongoing processes in the Netherlands, and this is reflected in many of the projects in this book which include the gardens and squares of West 8, the Museumsplein in Amsterdam, the town planning in Zutphen or Apeldoorn. In "Invented Edens", Robert Kargon and Arthur Molella trace the arc of one form of urban design, which they term the techno-city : a planned city developed in conjunction with large industrial or technological enterprises, blending the technological and the pastoral, the mill town and the garden city. Techno-cities of the twentieth century range from factory towns in Mussolini's Italy to the Disney creation of Celebration, Florida. Kargon and Molella show that the techno-city represents an experiment in integrating modern technology into the world of ideal life. Techno-cities mirror society's understanding of current technologies and, at the same time, seek to regain the lost virtues of the edenic pre-industrial village. The idea of the techno-city transcended ideologies, crossed national borders, and spanned the entire twentieth century. Kargon and Molella map the concept through a series of exemplars. These include Norris, Tennessee, home to the Tennessee Valley Authority; Torviscosa, Italy, built by Italy's Fascist government to accommodate synthetic textile manufacturing (and featured in an early short by Michelangelo Antonioni); Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela, planned by a team from MIT and Harvard; and, finally, Disney's Celebration - perhaps the ultimate techno-city, a fantasy city reflecting an era in which virtual experiences are rapidly replacing actual ones.

It reappraises the often-overlooked 2nd and 3rd CIAM conferences (1929-31), addressing their engagement with the "minimum dwelling" and revealing them both as milestones in the organisation's annals and as seminal moments in the history of interwar modernism. Split into two parts, ''The Minimum Dwelling'' Revisited first takes a genealogical approach to explore the provenance of the concept of "minimum dwelling" prior to the 2nd and 3rd CIAM conferences, it then traces the proceedings of the two conferences themselves. Addressing the origins of the "minimum dwelling" concept but also its legacies, and serving as a corrective to the overemphasis on 4th CIAM conference and the Athens Charter, the book is essential reading for scholars researching urban design during the Interwar period.
