Conceptual, schematic and design development sketches and drawings include isometrics and perspectives showing early ideas for the building's massing; schematic floor plans showing horizontal and vertical circulation paths throughout the building; diagrammatic plans indicating how people by car, foot, or bicycle would enter the building; diagrammatic sections showing the relationship between functional areas; and plan obliques of functional areas for square footage calculations. A panel composed of sketches with text and annotations describes Price's concept and the building program. Design development drawings also include floor plans showing circulation patterns, elevations showing the exterior stainless-steel cladding, isometrics showing the relationship between floor levels and functional areas, and perspectives which were possibly used to develop the overall massing of the building. Siza also submitted five other entries to the IBA: Görtlitzer Bad swimming pool; Block 70 and 89 (Fränkelufer residential complex); Bonjour Tristesse (Block 121); Block 11-12; and Monument to Gestapo victims. The Kulturforum was a complex of cultural buildings. The site underwent many changes during Nazi Germany and post-war with the construction of the National Library of Staatsbibliothek, designed by Hans Scharoun. Two examples of features that the IBA asked participants to include in their design proposals were to exclude vehicle traffic between the library and national gallery, and to reinterpret the Forum space. Documenting this project are several sketches and studies. There are also plans, elevations, and axonometric drawings of site plans. Siza’s office has indicated on some of the studies that they were possibly not created by Siza. Where this is the case it has been noted with the physical material. Photographs and negatives document the competition site and model, and there are transparencies and slides of drawings. The distinction between these names should be noted when viewing the materials. The Health Sciences Building was built as a teaching hospital and the main hub of clinical learning at the University of Ottawa’s School of Medicine. The building was conceived as a response to a lack of research spaces in Ottawa hospitals at that time. The building was proposed to be 230,000 net assigned square feet, with 75,000 net assigned square feet designated as research space. The project is recorded through textual records, construction photographs, drawings and artwork dating from 1971-1984. The Ottawa Heath Sciences Complex, a vast hospital network encompassing institutions across the city, hired Parkin Architects Planners in 1971 to design and construct University of Ottawa buildings within the network. These campus buildings were located in the Alta Vista neighbourhood and referred to as the Health Sciences Centre. This project consists of one building in that complex, the Health Sciences Building. The distinction between these names should be noted when viewing the materials. The Health Sciences Building was built as a teaching hospital and the main hub of clinical learning at the University of Ottawa’s School of Medicine. The building was conceived as a response to a lack of research spaces in Ottawa hospitals at that time. The building was proposed to be 230,000 net assigned square feet, with 75,000 net assigned square feet designated as research space. The project is recorded through textual records, construction photographs, drawings and artwork dating from 1971-1984. The textual records show correspondence with the clients, consultants and contractors, construction change orders and instructions, site and construction reports, meeting minutes, specifications, financial records, detail and product research and planning, and schedules.
