"The darkroom" contains the script for Marguerite Duras's 1977 radically experimental film "Le camion" ("The Truck"). Between images of a truck in motion, juxtaposed voiceovers, and cutaways to Duras in conversation with Gérard Depardieu, Le camion turns the art of film into a means of enabling the viewer to engage multiple faculties--not only the visual and the aural, but also memory, imagination, and desire. Also included here is a series of short essays in which Duras makes provocative connections between film and textuality, as well as a fascinating dialogue with Michelle Porte. Together amounting to a crucial contribution to the field of film theory, these texts make brilliantly apparent the depth and integrity of Duras's aesthetic, philosophical, and political thinking.

Résumé:
"One place after another" offers a critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s and a theoretical framework for examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism and political progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban theory, postmodernist criticism in art and architecture, and debates concerning identity politics and the public sphere, the book addresses the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between location and identity in the era of late capitalism. The book addresses the work of, among others, John Ahearn, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Donald Judd, Renée Green, Suzanne Lacy, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Richard Serra, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, and Fred Wilson.

Résumé:
This book bridges generations of powerful Indigenous feminist thinking to demonstrate the movement’s cruciality for today. ''Indigenous feminists'' in the first edition fought for feminism to be considered a valid and essential intellectual and activist position. The second edition animated Indigenous feminisms through real-world applications. This third edition, curated by award-winning scholar Gina Starblanket, reflects and celebrates Indigenous feminism’s intergenerational longevity through the changing landscape of anti-colonial struggle and theory. Diverse contributors examine Indigenous feminism’s ongoing relevance to contemporary contexts and debates, including queer and Two-Spirit approaches to decolonization, gendered and sexualized violence, storytelling and narrative, land-based presence, Black and Indigenous relationalities and more. Feminism has much to offer Indigenous women, and all Indigenous Peoples, in their struggles against oppression.

Résumé:
Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858–1937) was a Bengali scientist and polymath who developed a theory of plant communication more than a century ago. Bose suggested that plants had their own vocabulary, an "unvoiced life" that he recorded as a "script" with a crescograph, a device that measured how plants respond to each other and their environments. Inviting readers into the “resounding silence of the green plant kingdom," he described an underlying unity beneath the multiplicity of phenomena, and a world in which "endless music is sung everywhere." Dismissed as idiosyncratic and unscientific when he was alive, Bose provocatively challenged the hierarchy of living beings, which relegated plants to the bottom, and created a mesmerizing body of work on nonhuman intelligence.

Résumé:
In "The culture box," Harley Parker applies Marshall McLuhan’s medium theory to the museum, analyzes the museum as the site of many media, and specifies the ways in which designer-communicators can engage in inter-sense design to connect audiences and artifacts. Parker argues that museums should retrain the sensory perception of visitors and foster cultural engagement, participation, and empathy. In order to accomplish this, he recommends the construction of what he calls a "new centre," emphasizing both "new" and "news," a small "newseum" which would engender discussion and debate. Parker envisions these centres being constructed adjacent to any existing large prestige museum and containing three exhibits: a current public exhibit, an exhibit in process, and an area for gathering materials for a forthcoming exhibit.

Résumé:
Plant life is a subject frequently ignored in the context of urban theory, and the essays in 'The Botanical City' offer a fresh perspective into new ecological forms that continue to emerge in cities across the world. Much like the unique adaptive strategies of city-native animals, urban plants often become distinctively intertwined with their cities’ human infrastructure, and this book explores both the scientific approaches to understanding these new ecologies and attempts on the part of writers and artists to engage with urban flora. Edited by the British cultural geographers Matthew Gandy and Sandra Jasper, the book comprises ecological reflections on city design, history, art and mapmaking, alongside philosophical excursions on the meaning of urban ecology in the Anthropocene.

Advancing a methodology that is rooted in good theory and practice, this book features case studies conducted in the Arctic and Africa, in Canada and Kathmandu, and in the Peruvian Amazon, Chesapeake Bay, and Chennai, India. Applying a systems approach to concrete environmental issues, this volume is geared toward scientists, engineers, and sustainable development scholars and practitioners who are attuned to the ideas of the Resilience Alliance-an international group of scientists who take a more holistic view of ecology and environmental problem-solving. Chapters cover the origins and rebirth of the ecosystem approach in ecology; the bridging of science and values; the challenge of governance in complex systems; systemic and participatory approaches to management; and the place for cultural diversity in the quest for global sustainability.

Résumé:
Perspecta 51, ''Medium.'' Since the arrival of radio and television in the twentieth century, understandings of space have become visibly intertwined with what is commonly referred to as the media. But what is a medium? Dictionaries define ''medium'' as something in the middle, or, a means of conveyance, and this elemental understanding of medium has nourished early conversations of networks and cybernetics, as well as recent media theory. Yet today, midcentury architectural fictions and fantasies are reality—nomadic devices connect people, rooms, buildings, and cities to vast networks of data, capital, and energy; media are palpably enmeshed in the concrete built environment surrounding us. This volume of Perspecta takes a broad view of medium to take stock of and unpack unexpected relationships.
