Résumé:
''Making Marks'' showcases the private sketchbooks of the world's most visually inventive architects, revealing just how much drawing by hand informs great contemporary architecture. Taking a post-digital perspective, the sixty renowned architects whose work is collected here show how drawing and new forms of manual presentation have been refined since the reawakening of this basic technique. Notepads, stacks of paper, pencils and fine-point pens are as present in the architect's studio as phalanxes of screens. Revealing why and how hand-drawing still matters, this global survey presents the freehand drawings, vibrant watercolours and abstract impressions of rising talents and well-known names, including Jun Igarashi and Brian MacKay-Lyons.

Résumé:
''Lost Days, Endless Nights'' tells a history from below—an account of the lives of the forgotten and dispossessed of Los Angeles: the unemployed, the precariously employed, the evicted, the alienated, the unhoused, the anxious, the exhausted. Through an analysis of abandoned archival works, experimental films, and other projects, Andrew Witt offers an expansive account of the artists who have lived or worked in Los Angeles, delving into the region's history and geography, highlighting its racial, gender, and class conflicts. Presented as a series of nine case studies, Witt explores how artists as diverse as Agnès Varda, Dana Lixenberg, Allan Sekula, Catherine Opie, John Divola, Gregory Halpern, Paul Sepuya, and Guadalupe Rosales have reimagined and reshaped our understanding of contemporary Los Angeles. The book features portraits of those who struggle and attempt to get by in the city: dock workers, students, bus riders, petty criminals, office workers, immigrants, queer and trans activists. Set against the landscape of economic turmoil and environmental crises that shadowed the 1970s, Witt highlights the urgent need for a historical perspective of cultural retrieval and counternarrative. Extending into the present, ''Lost Days, Endless Nights'' advocates for an approach that actively embraces the works and projects that have been overlooked and evicted from the historical imaginary

Résumé:
Western society is being terrorized by fear. Whether concerning national security, road safety or the protection of public health, every form of risk is meant to be spread, accounted for or eradicated. The safety and security obsession is leaving behind ever more visible traces, especially in public space. Speed bumps, smoke-free zones and surveillance cameras serve a society where prevention is the order of the day. This second book in the Group portraits series -a collaboration between the Netherlands architecture fund and the Netherlands foundation for visual arts, design and architecture (Fonds BKVB) - once again brings together four groups of young designers around a highly topical theme. As a sequel to the successful "City branding" book, this publication explores the various aspects of fear and prevention and considers the impact on contemporary urban space in four chapters. All the stops are pulled out: text, photography, research and design alternate in a thought-provoking sequence. This publication is the result of intensive research into the presence of fear in our Western society and the role that architecture might play herein. It is therefore an instrument for students, researchers, architects and policy-makers who are concerned with security issues.

Résumé:
The work of Didier Faustino focuses on the relationship between body and space. Since 1995, he has operated at the boundary between art and architecture, creating large installations and projects that incorporate the subversion of spaces and the exacerbation of our senses. These are often characterised by their fictional dimension, critical stance, and ability to offer new experiences to the individual and collective body. In ‘Vortex Populi’ he explores how the architectural form can exist within transversality. The project’s central theme is the violent clashes between protestors and authoritarian forces, and the structures and spatial oppositions that emerge.
