What does it mean to acknowledge one’s closeness to, enmeshment in or even kinship with the material world? And what does it mean to question family structures – the way they organise, coerce and make deviant certain lifeforms – and dwell in other possibilities of kin-making? What does it mean to acknowledge one’s closeness to, enmeshment in or even kinship with the material world? And what does it mean to question family structures – the way they organise, coerce and make deviant certain lifeforms – and dwell in other possibilities of kin-making? Not just a jolly rethinking of objects or a polyamorous romp through relationships, this book reckons with the extractavist histories of materials and the social relations that frame much of contemporary life. Spanning fiction and theory, the collection of texts expands the idea of an artist’s book by bringing words into conversation with an aesthetic proposition. From colonial conquest to climate collapse, it tells toxic and tender stories of interdependence among all things sentient and insentient.

Résumé:
Human heads on animal bodies, people in fanciful landscapes, faces that are deftly morphed into common household objects—these are among the Victorian experiments in photocollage seen and explained in this marvelous book. With sharp wit and dramatic shifts of scale, these images flouted the serious conventions of photography in the 1860s and 1870s. Often made by women for albums, they reveal the educated minds and accomplished hands of their makers, taking on the new theory of evolution, addressing the changing role of photography, and challenging the strict conventions of aristocratic society. Although these photocollages may seem wonderfully odd to us now, the authors argue that they are actually perfectly in keeping with the Victorian sensibility that embraced juxtaposition and variety.

Résumé:
Contrary to what is suggested by most historical accounts, the Second World War was a key moment in the modernisation of architectural theory and practice. Architecture in Uniform offers a new perspective on the architectural history of the war, documenting a series of episodes that took place between the bombings of Guernica in 1937 and Hiroshima in 1945, leading to the definitive supremacy of modernism in architecture. It discusses topics such as the role of cities in the air war, the new buildings erected for industrial production, architecture's participation in actual warfare, and wartime mega-projects and post-war developments in the civilian sphere, revealing the extent of the contribution made by architects to all aspects of the mobilisation that characterised the war years.

Résumé:
Josef Albers' rigorous investigations into color have had a decisive effect on art in the twentieth century and beyond. His teaching posts at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale enabled him to bequeath his theories to several generations of artists and designers, from Max Bill and Mark Rothko to Eva Hesse and Ray Johnson. Published for an exhibition at the Morgan library, and with an abundance of previously uncollected works, this volume unveils the full bounty of Albers' works on paper: lithographs, linocuts, woodcuts, screenprints and etchings. Since the prints lack the just-visible brushwork of Albers' paintings, allowing color to emerge without surface blemish, some have argued that they constitute a more effective illustration of his color theory.

Résumé:
The Situationist International (SI), led by Guy Debord and central to the Paris uprising in May 1968, published many incendiary texts on politics and art in the journal Internationale Situationniste. One central theme to their work was rethinking the city: from a site for routine consumption and work to a utopia that breaks down barriers between function and play. In this essential volume Tom McDonough collects together all of the SI’s key essays on urbanism and the city. The book is illustrated by images that were core to the SI project. It includes such key texts as “The Theory of Dérive,” “Formulary for a New Urbanism,” and many previously untranslated texts, including those that came out of the Situationists’ collaboration with Henri Lefebvre.

Résumé:
Widely acknowledged as the last great landscape designer of the eighteenth century, Humphry Repton created work that survives as a bridge between the picturesque theory of Capability Brown and the pastoral philosophy of Frederick Law Olmsted. By turns inspired by and in opposition to the grandeur of Brown’s estates, Repton’s contribution to the British landscape encompassed a tremendous range, from subtle adjustments that emphasized the natural features of the countryside to deliberate interventions that challenged the notion of the picturesque. This book explores 15 of Repton’s most celebrated landscapes—from the early maturity of his gardens at Courteenhall and Mulgrave Castle to more adventurous landscapes at Stanage, Brightling, and Endsleigh that would point the way toward how we envision parkland today.

London-based ecoLogicStudio focuses on climate and carbon neutrality, and how photosynthesis can be incorporated into architecture. Atelier LUMA is the research design branch of LUMA Arles, mapping and identifying the local resources of the unique bioregion of Camargue to build its own studio. Finally, the Ithaca, New York–based Jenny Sabin Studio uses theory and knowledge from biology and mathematics to help develop new digital tools and structures that work in interaction with people and nature. This catalog highlights each firm’s most important projects alongside three conversations between the studio founders and an expert architectural

Résumé:
Claes Oldenburg’s commitment to familiar objects has shaped accounts of his career, but his associations with Pop art and postwar consumerism have overshadowed another crucial aspect of his work. In this revealing reassessment, Katherine Smith traces Oldenburg’s profound responses to shifting urban conditions, framing his enduring relationship with the city as a critical perspective and conceiving his art as urban theory. Smith argues that Oldenburg adapted lessons of context, gleaned from New York’s changing cityscape in the late 1950s, to large-scale objects and architectural plans. By examining disparate projects from New York to Los Angeles, she situates Oldenburg’s innovations in local geographies and national debates. In doing so, Smith illuminates patterns of urbanization through the important contributions of one of the leading artists in the United States.
