Résumé:
This fifth issue of the e-flux Index, comprises nine new categories for sorting it all out. These are titled: Is That All There Is?; What a Body Can Do; The Physicists’ Laugh; Dens, clubs, hives, and cells; The Tourist; Flickers; Promethean Shame; Proxies; and Inextinguishable Fires. In the exploratory spirit of Bas Jan Ader’s Primary Time (1974) or Susan Hiller’s remarks on the forbidden childhood pleasures of taxonomizing, more than that of Linnaeus, each of these categories represents an attempt at daisy cutting samples from the dynamic, complex meadow of discourse across the arts, architecture, education, theory, and politics. This deviant taxonomy is not designed to reduce or abstract away from the complexity of critical discourse and artistic activity in the present moment, but rather to do justice to this very heterogeneity.

From June 6, 2021 to September 5, 2021, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art presents “Wang Tuo: Empty-handed into History.” As Wang Tuo’s (b. 1984, Changchun) first institutional solo show, this exhibition collects eight of the artist's single- and multi-channel video works, including, in its complete form for the first time, “The Northeast Tetralogy,” as well as related archival materials and sketches from the artist, presenting an overview of the artist's early-career works. On the occasion of the exhibition, UCCA published Wang Tuo's first-ever catalogue, which reproduces his video works through still images and script excerpts. Essays by exhibition curator Luan Shixuan and critics Fu Liaoliao and Zian Chen contextualize the artist's oeuvre through the perspectives of history, literary theory, Chinese traditional beliefs, and other frameworks.

In an age of email lists and discussion groups, e-zines and weblogs, bringing together users, consumers, workers and activists from around the globe, what kinds of political subjectivity are emerging? What kinds of politics become possible in a time of information overload and media saturation? What structures of power and control operate over a self-organising system like the internet? In this highly original new work, Tiziana Terranova investigates the political dimension of the network culture in which we now live, and explores what the new forms of communication and organisation might mean for our understanding of power and politics. Terranova engages with key concepts and debates in cultural theory and cultural politics, using examples from media culture, computing, network dynamics, and internet activism within the anti-capitalist and anti-war movements.

Résumé:
This book is the result of research carried out at the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design of the University of Campania ‘Luigi Vanvitelli’ and thanks to funds from the PON Green and Innovation project. The aim of this work was the desire to investigate a new theory of reuse at a time when space is corrupted by traces of the recent past resulting from speculation and ‘easy building’. The paradigm of architecture’s function is changing and the project must be in dialogue with the possibility of architecture having many more lives than what it was imagined for, perhaps returning to being what it has always been, an organism ready to be everything and composed of layers of time, just as the history of architecture has taught us by building on the built without fear.

Résumé:
Innovative textile-based artwork exploded across the Canadian Prairies in the second half of the twentieth century. Melding craft traditions with modern and modernist movements in art and theory, a diverse body of creators opened a beautiful new chapter in textile art. "Prairie Interlace" brings together some of the most important scholars of art and craft in Canada to examine the work of forty-eight artists working with textiles from the 1960s to 2000. Recapturing and recording lost histories, this book explores both artists working with textiles and centres of textile study and production, paying special attention to the contexts in which artworks were produced. Indigenous scholars, experts in textile techniques, and experts in Prairie textile history provide fascinating insight into an artistic movement which, until now, has been largely overlooked.

Résumé:
Telling the story of one of the most important gardens in Europe, created by the internationally celebrated architectural critic and designer Charles Jencks and his late wife, the landscape architect and author Maggie Keswick, this book looks at The Garden of Cosmic Speculation. It is a landscape that celebrates the new sciences of complexity and chaos theory and consists of a series of metaphors exploring the origins, the destiny and the substance of the Universe. The garden is full of ideas, associations, games and memories; Jencks weaves his personal account of the garden's creation into an investigation into the revelations of recent science, using landscape and design to shed light on the way we can now conceive of the Universe. This book is illustrated with year-round photography

Résumé:
How does media architecture distribute suspicion and trust? What is a collage of media architecture? How is media architecture vectored? How can media architecture address privilege? These questions and conceptual provocations aim to challenge the binary of techno-optimism and technological agoraphobia, offering a platform for developing new, critically and contextually rooted theories that media architecture might grab hold of. Intentionally open-ended, ''Provocations on Media Architecture'' brings together 21 thought leaders across architecture, visual arts, design, curation, academia and public policy to address these ideas and themes. Authors respond with images and brief texts incorporating the perspective of their own creative and scholarly practice. Entries range from descriptions of relevant artworks and design projects to reflections spawned from first-person encounters with media architecture in situ, scholarly analyses and AI-assisted theory.
