Résumé:
"Architectures of ageing in place" provides curated critical perspectives, from a practice-based research point of view, of buildings that are purpose built and/or refurbished to accommodate housing and care needs of older people ageing in place in high rise/medium rise integrated communities. This book identifies design innovations, in line with policy innovations, that have been made across private and public sectors to accommodate wellbeing and quality of life of older people living in integrated communities, which continue to foster intergenerational dialogue and exchange, and advance social citizenship. Case studies from a diverse range of geographies are examined including Portugal, Singapore, India, New Zealand, UK, Sweden, Belgium and the US. Chapters are grounded in evidence-based research including substantial primary data and post-occupancy evaluation, specifically the evaluation of architecture’s ‘social performance’. Projects highlight high-rise / medium-rise as an emerging and successful typology in accommodating residential and care needs of older people.

Centered on the Al Ahsa region, one of the world's oldest and largest oases, "Maghras: A farm for experimentation" (accompanying the inaugural Saudi Pavilion at the 24th Triennale di Milano, marking Saudi Arabia's first participation in this global architecture and design platform) reimagines the farm as a site of collective inquiry, where environmental change, cultural memory, and community practices converge. The publication documents research, fieldwork, and newly commissioned projects by architects, artists, and practitioners who engaged with farmers, craftspeople, and residents of Al Ahsa. Through essays, images, oral histories, and archival material, it reflects on the shifting relationship between land, water, and community in a landscape transformed by modernization and urban expansion.

Résumé:
Over 60 years on from its inception, the celebrated Fun Palace civic project – developed in the 1960s by the radical theatre director Joan Littlewood and the architect Cedric Price – continues to capture the architectural imagination. Despite the building itself never being realized, much of the previous analysis of the Fun Palace has been devoted to Price and his drawings. The critical role that Littlewood played, however, remains largely unrecognized by architectural scholarship, and a whole area of the project's cultural agenda remains overlooked. ''Architecture, Media, Archives'' is the first serious study of the complex relations between Littlewood and Price, reframing the Fun Palace as an extended media project and positioning Littlewood more clearly as co-designer. Drawing on extensive archival material, the book considers how, due to a lack of institutional support, the aims of the Fun Palace – to transform the passive mass-audiences of post-war consumer society into active citizens, through forms of self-directed, pleasure-led and open exchange – were realized through different 'sites of information' throughout the 1960s. From broadsheets, pamphlets and journals to films and press news, the book addresses the conditions of production, circulation, storage and reception of these 'sites' and reveals how they not only recorded the transformation of the project, but also fundamentally enhanced and informed its meaning in specific ways.

Résumé:
"Up in the air" tells the story of Britain’s multi-storey council housing from its beginnings to the present day. Throughout its history, high rise has been a symbol of the welfare state for better or worse. Here, Holly Smith tells a new story from the perspective of those who lived there, exploring how residents grappled with this brave new world above the old skyline. Through a series of historical moments based upon prize-winning research, we confront the human story of high-rise Britain. Interrogating the complex inheritance of mid-century urban reconstruction, Smith shows how these buildings became a crucible for the welfare state’s reimagination over the decades.

Video is everywhere. Since its debut as a consumer medium in the 1960s, video has shaped our opinions, our politics and our societies. On our phones and computer screens, walls and streets, it defines new spaces and experiences—spreading memes, lies, fervor, fact and fiction. In other words, video has transformed the world. Featuring works from the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this illuminating exhibition catalog—MoMA’s first major publication on video art in nearly 30 years—explores the ways in which artists have both championed and questioned video’s promise, some hoping to create new networks of communication, democratic engagement and public participation, others protesting commercial and state control over information, vision and truth itself.

Résumé:
In the summer of 1934, the London Zoo opened its new Penguin Pool. Designed by Berthold Lubetkin and the Tecton Company, in collaboration with Ove Arup, the elegant, interlocking concrete spiral ramps on which the penguins “showcase their social talents” was met with universal acclaim. In the years since, the structure has been celebrated for its iconic architecture—and has justly been criticized for its inadequacy when it comes to housing penguins. The collective research conducted in the framework of the Bauhaus Lab in 2023 critically reflects on the far-reaching constellations, geographical imaginaries, design discourses and material entanglements of this multi-species environment. Based on archival research and excursions, the publication unfolds multiple epistemologies of the Penguin Pool through a spectrum of theoretical, historical and cultural phenomena straddling the realms of architecture, historiography and more-than-human entanglements, while at the same time proposing contemporary gestures of co-habitation.

Résumé:
Has architectural criticism disappeared for good or has it adapted to the pressures, exigencies, and fashions of the present? Its demise may be due to fibrillation or asthenia, to excessive sharp judgment, condemnation, and critique, or, conversely, to a resigned acceptance of reality. But should the eclipse of criticism today be regarded as lamentable? Might not its lack be hailed as a new phase of rigor and objectivity? The objective of both the lecture series "The future or the eclipse of criticism" presented at the MAXXI Museum in Rome, and the eponymous symposium which took place at the University of Pisa’s School of Engineering was to identify those figures, exhibitions, publication projects, and paradigmatic constructions that have either supported or directed particular critical approaches.

Résumé:
First published in 1854, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden has influenced generations of readers and continues to inspire and inform anyone with an open mind, a love of nature, and a longing for simplicity and contemplation. Recounting the author’s reflections on simple living after a period he spent in a small cabin he built near Walden Pond, the book places Thoreau firmly in his role as cultural and spiritual seer. Bill McKibben offers both an intelligent and captivating introduction and a body of insightful annotations to Thoreau’s original edition. He addresses two philosophical questions posed by Thoreau: "How much is enough?" and, "How do I know what I want?", to draw meaningful connections between Thoreau’s writing and our lived experience in the 21st century.
