Résumé:
Among the most sumptuous buildings of antiquity were royal palaces. As in the Old World, kings and nobles of ancient Mexico and Peru had luxurious administrative quarters in cities, and exquisite pleasure palaces in the countryside. This volume explores the great houses of the ancient New World, from palaces of the Aztecs and Incas, looted by the Spanish conquistadors, to those lost high in the Andes and deep in the jungle. This volume, the first scholarly compendium of elite residences of the high cultures of the New World, presents definitive descriptions and interpretations by leading scholars in the field. Authoritative yet accessible, this extensively illustrated book will serve as an important resource for anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians of art, architecture, and related disciplines.

Résumé:
Intrepid Prussian explorer, scientist, diplomat and author Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was reputedly the second best-known person in early nineteenth-century France (Stephen Jay Gould describes him as "probably the world's most famous and influential intellectual [of his time]"), yet he is little known in the US today. From 1799 to 1804, Humboldt traversed about 6,000 miles, journeying through the Spanish American colonies (modern-day Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and Cuba) to observe nature in the "torrid zone," and later published some 30 volumes about his travels. This catalogue traces the breadth of Humboldt's influence through painting and objects, including work by Albert Bierstadt, Adela Breton, Norton Bush, Frederic Edwin Church, George Catlin, Martin Johnson Heade, Louis Rémy Mignot, Thomas Moran, Johann Moritz Rugendas and Mark Dion.

Résumé:
From their Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize-winning design for the University of Piura educational facilities to their design for the Place of Remembrance in Lima, Barclay & Crousse's work binds together the most current advances in technology with designs that center on the quality of life of its dwellers. Their works show how design specific to the conditions of developing countries can inform and be vital to global architectural conversation. Founded in Paris by Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse in 1994, the firm relocated to Lima, Peru, in 2006, pursuing their projects in Europe through Atelier Nord-Sud. This book presents 12 buildings illustrated through sketches, plans and over 120 photographs by Chilean photographer Cristóbal Palma. The volume is a work unto itself that demonstrates the architects' mastery of space.

Catalogue of the exhibition presenting the work of American architects Platform for Architecture + Research / PAR, founded by Jennifer Marmon in Los Angeles in 2003. Questioning the role and limits of architecture today, Marmon, together with her collective team, are part of a new generation of architects exploring universal topics as a means to expand their discipline in new ways. With its idea of a network of ‘relations’, the exhibition reflects the essential architectural elements that influence the office’s award winning work that aims to establish a dialogue with people as well as the urban fabric. The exhibition presents buildings, competition entries and urban studies that range in scale from small houses to museum concepts e.g. the Wilshire Tower in Los Angeles/US, the Taichung Cultural Center in Taichung/Taiwan, the Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki/Finland and the Lima Art Museum in Lima/Peru.

Résumé:
Of Indigenous origin, Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi (1891–1973) dedicated a large part of his life to photographing the Peruvian Andes, reclaiming the pre-Hispanic past through images of Inca ruins and portraits of life in Andean communities in the early 20th century. Chambi’s work brings a new perspective to photography of the time, highlighting the emerging Indigenous discourse that was starting to gain force in South America. While he was not the first to photograph Machu Picchu, Chambi was among the first Peruvian chroniclers of the Inca citadel. Drawing on Machu Picchu’s geometric forms, Chambi’s work entered a new phase in which shape, space and texture build toward more complex compositions and starker contrasts, making him an emblem of contemporary documentary photography in Peru and Latin America. This clothbound volume compiles 170 of Chambi’s black-and-white images.

Résumé:
Robert Frank is one of the most influential of all post-war photographers. Pioneering a revolutionary approach to photography and filmmaking, he combines autobiographical and poetic elements to produce straight black-and-white images that transcend the specific. Speaking of universal experience, Frank has said, "I'm trying to forget easy photo, trying to make something from within." He adds, "Time moves on and never stops or waits." Often involving a progression through a series of images, his work is structured like a musical sequence, creating storylines that resonate beyond the frozen moment of any single photograph. "Storylines" accompanies an exhibition highlighting Frank's experimental use of narrative in photography and film. The exhibition consists of his films and photographs, including Polaroids, contact sheets, and recent digital stills. Photographs from locations as diverse as Peru, London, Wales, Coney Island, and Chicago, appear along with several artist's books.

Résumé:
Inscribed with the quote, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly / what is essential is invisible to the eye,” by writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Robert Frank's handcrafted 1952 book, Black White and Things, was made in an edition of three identical copies designed by Werner Zryd, each with a spiral binding containing original photographs of Frank's travels to cities including Paris, New York, Valencia and St. Louis. First reprinted for an exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., in 1994, this edition has now been designed in a smaller format by Frank. The three categories “black,” “white” and “things,” are shaped more by mood than subject matter: vastly different images—Frank's first wife reclining with their newborn baby, peasants squatting against a flaking wall in Peru and a business man strolling past a snow-filled tree in London—are all gathered in the “white” section, for example.

Résumé:
In 1930s Bolivia, self-described Anarchist Cholas form a libertarian trade union. In the Northern Highlands of Vietnam, the songs of one girl’s youth lead her to a life of activism. In the Philippines, female elders from Kalinga blaze a trail when pushed into impromptu protest. Equally striking accounts from Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, India, Nepal, Peru and Thailand weave a tapestry of trauma and triumph, shedding light on not-too-distant histories otherwise overlooked. Indigenous Peoples all over the world have always had to stand their ground in the face of colonialism. While the details may differ, what these stories have in common is their commitment to resistance in a world that puts profit before respect, and western notions of progress before their own. Movements and Moments is an introductory glimpse into how Indegenous Peoples tell these stories in their own words. From Southeast Asia to South America, vibrant communities must grapple with colonial realities to assert ownership over their lands and traditions. This project was undertaken in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Indonesien in Jakarta. These stories were selected from an open call across 42 countries to spotlight feminist movements and advocacies in the Global South.
