Résumé:
Educated in England, David Adjaye’s lifelong dream was to return to Africa as an architect to document the continent’s built environment. Over a decade, he tirelessly documented these dynamic, colorful cities, photographing thousands of buildings, sites, and public spaces, and letting each building speak for itself. The fifty-three cities featured in this study are grouped according to the terrain in which they are set: the Maghreb (north Africa); Desert; Sahel (the semi-arid transitional region between the Sahara and the south); Forest; Savannah and Grassland; and Mountain and Highveld.

Résumé:
The contributors -- international curators and scholars from a range of disciplines -- examine the emergence of photography as mass culture: through studios and public spaces; by the press; through editorial strategies promoting popular and vernacular photography; and through the dissemination of photographic images in the art world. The contributing authors discuss such topics as how photographic images became objects of appropriation and collection; the faith in photographic truthfulness; Life magazine's traveling exhibitions and their effect on the magazine's "media hegemony"; and the curatorial challenges of making vernacular photographs accessible in an artistic environment.

Résumé:
What do outer space capsules, submarines and office buildings have in common? Each was conceived as a closed system- a self-sustaining physical environment demarcated from its surroundings by a boundary prohibiting the transfer of matter or energy. As partial reconstructions of the world in time and space, closed systems identify and implement the basic materials necessary for the sustenance of life. From the space program to countercultural architectural groups experimenting with autonomous living, ''The Architecture of Closed Worlds'' documents a disciplinary transformation and the rise of a new environmental consciousness.

Résumé:
Courts of law are projections of civic power into the built environment. States have traditionally expressed themselves with monumentality, with its implications of permanence, but modern government aspires to transparency, which society also expects. Five projects demonstrate how architects address these tensions, among them the Paris Courthouse by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the Palace of Justice in Córdoba by Mecanoo + AYESA. In addition, five recently completed cultural warehouses by KOKO Architects, Franklin Azzi, and others show how various design strategies can be implemented in the conversion of industrial buildings to other functions.

A major retrospective survey celebrating one of Canada's greatest landscape photographers, Geoffrey James. Geoffrey James's photographic work over the past twenty years explores the natural environment and the way in which human activity registers upon it. All his photographs, from the tranquility of the Roman Campagna to the desolate demarcations of the U.S./Mexican border, reverberate with a sense of human habitation, which is not always formally evident. This major retrospective includes an illustrated chronology of James's career and essays from Lori Pauli, Stephen Bann and Britt Salvesen.
