Résumé:
The most complete monograph dedicated to the work of Michael Maltzan and his Los Angeles-based architecture practice, this book presents 16 of Maltzan’s most recent projects with full-color photographs, drawings, and plans. Maltzan is an architect who deals with the realities of urban landscape through the manipulation of ground, circulation, and perception. Among his best-known projects is MoMA QNS, Maltzan’s reworking of a former factory into a temporary accommodation for the Museum of Modern Art, which opened in Queens, New York, in June 2002. Projects currently in design or under construction include several innovative residences in California, the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, and Kidspace Children’s Museum, Pasadena, which was selected for the 2002 Venice Biennale International Exhibition of Architecture. Edited by Raymund Ryan with essays by Ai Weiwei and Mirko Zardini and a foreword by Richard Armstrong.

Résumé:
Walter Pichler foresaw the future nearly 60 years ago. His “TV-Helmet (Portable Living Room)” anticipated technologies akin to today’s cyber glasses. At the time, this vision was nothing short of revolutionary. Today, such concepts are not only a reality but have advanced significantly. Virtual and digital realities are now integral to designing, planning, and constructing spaces – far more than mere devices for experiencing them. Lengthy construction workflows, optimised designs, and the complex coordination of planning, cost control, and project management are increasingly digitalised. We can now program buildings to meet parametric specifications, construct homes using 3D printing, and create detailed 3D models of existing buildings to analyse them before renovation even begins. While landscape has transformed dramatically, digitalisation in architecture is clearly still in its early stages. To begin the year, this issue shines a spotlight on the digital present and future of architecture, exploring how digital tools can enhance sustainability. Our project documentations showcase an array of approaches, from digital material passports to parametric models and BIM applications for existing structures. Experts offer insight on the complexities of planning and construction processes.

Résumé:
The official catalog for the United Arabic Emirates' National Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, ''In Plain Sigh''t was conceived as a collection of travels through aridity. Contributors were asked to explore the relationship between travel, travel writing and the built environment. What emerged was a diverse set of positions and attitudes towards travel writing that ranged from documenting journeys through historical texts and images in search of lost relationships with aridity and the practices it engenders, to authors who traveled to contemporary arid spaces in search of nuance and abundance, and essays that explore the blurry and conceptual edges of aridity. Alongside the travel-based contributions, the book presents a series of field notes, ostensibly framed as research findings. In the field notes, curator Faysal Tabbarah attempts to narrate the places, materials and tactics that he encountered on numerous trips. Buttressing these field notes are photographic series depicting the range of tactics used in constructing Al Hajar’s built environment. Addressing aridity across time, space and ideas, In Plain Sight recasts the genre of travel literature, challenging the ways in which arid environments have historically been depicted.

Résumé:
Sandy Isenstadt examines how architects, interior designers, and landscape designers worked to enhance spatial perception in middle class houses visually. The desire for spaciousness reached its highest pitch where it was most lacking, in the small, single-family houses that came to be the cornerstone of middle class life in the nineteenth century. In direct conflict with actual dimensions, spaciousness was linked to a tension unique to the middle class - between spatial aspirations and financial limitations.

Résumé:
In the South of France, sited on a hill of olive trees, pinus pinea, and a vineyard, a family retreat was designed with a key mission of maintaining the vitality of the site. A small agricultural plot, the site offered the possibility of amplification. With the introduction of a garden and many outdoor living spaces, the family had the intention of cultivating the landscape as part of their stewardship. In part a response to a programmatic brief, but moreover, a discursive response to architectural predicaments of geometry, typology, and anomaly, the house is also a response to Preston Scott Cohen’s pedagogies on architecture.

Résumé:
Whether exploring the potential of a new technology, redefining a typology, or engaging a community on the other side of the globe, the lines of inquiry beginning at the GSD consistently indicate relevance to larger social, cultural, and spatial questions. To understand the scope of this potential impact, the work was framed with one simple question: “What can design do?”. We have identified five actions that describe the ability of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning and Design at the GSD to reach beyond their immediate contexts and out into the world: Instigate Evolution, Describe Identity, Construct Equality, Negotiate Growth, Imagine New Futures. The range and definition of these actions is tested through the work of a representative collection of studios, lectures, seminars, symposia, colloquia, thesis projects, and student research. The core studios are presented here in sequence.

How do city and architecture flourish together ? This question is central to the three-dimensional capriccio that displays a fictional Flemish urban environment. Over time, the informal city in Flanders and Brussels has developed a unique relationship with its architecture. This staged urban landscape reveals how historical layers, morphological peculiarities and unforeseen collisions are an endless source of energy for contemporary architectural production. Résumé:
Accompanying an exhibition at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh opening in November 2017, this book brings together more than 30 photographs by Talbot that demonstrate his wide-ranging interests, including nature, still-life, portraiture, architecture and landscape. Some of these images are previously unpublished. Through thematic groupings elucidated by noted Talbot scholar Larry Schaaf, the book reveals the photographer’s early striving to test the boundaries of his medium at a historic moment when art and science intersected. With its luminous reproductions of Talbot’s fragile works, this publication demonstrates that, in its earliest days, photography required a form of magic-making and innovation that continues to inspire people today.
