Résumé:
Contemporary discomfort with romanticism and Utopia arguably obstructs the shift of Lefebvre’s thinking from being objects of theoretical interest into positions of actually influencing practices. Attempting to understand and act upon architecture and the city with Lefebvre but without Utopia and romanticism risks muting the impact of his ideas. Although Utopia may seem to have no place in the present, Lefebvre reveals this as little more than a self-serving affirmation that ‘there is no alternative’ to social and political detachment. Demanding the impossible may end in failure but as Lefebvre shows us, doing so is the first step towards other possibilities. To think with Lefebvre is to think about Utopia, doing so makes contact with what is most enduring about his project for the city and its inhabitants, and with what is most radical about it as well. "Lefebvre for architects" offers a concise account of the relevance of Henri Lefebvre’s writing for the theory and practice of architecture, planning and urban design. This book is accessible for students and practitioners who wish to fully engage with the design possibilities offered by Lefebvre’s philosophy.

How do architects use colour? Do they adopt a different strategy or starting point for every project? Do they gradually cultivate individual colour palettes, which develop alongside their body of built work? Architectural colour in the professional palette investigates, documents and analyses the work of a number of contemporary architects in order to respond to these questions and provide a clear reference of contemporary colour use. The book suggests a holistic approach to the integration of colour in architecture; through a series of thematic essays, the text explores and reveals underlying principles in colour design and application.

Résumé:
Some art is dismissed as "difficult"--difficult because of the media it employs, but even more so because of the sociopolitical themes it addresses. This art is often conceptual or performative, works cross-disciplinarily with architecture and design, and critically examines social parameters and the role of the media. Its media is naturally mixed, spanning and going beyond photography, film, video, and installation, all of which allow for process-oriented engagement. The Generali Foundation in Vienna has devoted much of its collection, exhibition energy, and research focus to this "difficult" type of artwork. Though many of the artists that form its collection are part of the canon of recent art history, they are mostly underrepresented in institutions--but not the Generali Foundation. Occupying Space presents a dense, comprehensive selection of projects from its collection by such artists as Valie Export, Andrea Fraser, Isa Genzken, Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Hans Hollein, Mary Kelly, Gordon Matta-Clark, Adrian Piper, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, Peter Weibel, and Franz West, together with brief, articulate texts on their work.

Résumé:
Although highly regarded during his short life--and honored by artists and architects today--the American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-78) has been largely ignored within the history of art. Matta-Clark is best remembered for site-specific projects known as "building cuts." Sculptural transformations of architecture produced through direct cuts into buildings scheduled for demolition, these works now exist only as sculptural fragments, photographs, and film and video documentations. Matta-Clark is also remembered as a catalytic force in the creation of SoHo in the early 1970s. Through loft activities, site projects at the exhibition space 112 Greene Street, and his work at the restaurant Food, he participated in the production of a new social and artistic space. In this first critical account of Matta-Clark's work, Lee considers it in the context of the art of the 1970s--particularly site-specific, conceptual, and minimalist practices--and its confrontation with issues of community, property, the alienation of urban space, the "right to the city," and the ideologies of progress that have defined modern building programs.

This special issue of "Writingplace" brings together the work of the EU COST Writing Urban Places network. Using narrative approaches to analysis and design, the network highlights the specificity of local urban cultures in contemporary European cities. Drawing on research from a range of disciplines (including architecture, urban studies, literary theory, sociology and media studies), the issue explores spatial approaches that promote responsible, site-specific and socially inclusive design strategies for European cities. The first section offers reflections on the theoretical, methodological and practical outcomes of the Writing Urban Places project. The second part contains case studies of European cities that were studied during the EU COST Action, including Limerick, Almada, Osijek, Tallinn, Tampere, Porto, Canakalle, Skopje and Delft. These collected findings offer important insights for students, scholars and spatial practitioners interested in urban planning and the European city.
