The Netherlands is crowded and so it is hardly surprising that architects endeavour to "stack" landscapes and functions as the Dutch pavilion in the Expo 2000, designed by MVRDV demonstrated. Here, new ideas and concepts in architecture and landscape design fall on the fertile ground. Rem Koolhaas had prepared the way: nothing must stay as it is, even the open countryside and the towns can be changed, moulded, shaped. The Dutch are experts at building in the sea, on polders, on man-made islands, and on former harbour areas as in Rotterdam Kop van Zuid. Architecture and landscape architecture are not only a matter of public interest but they are ongoing processes in the Netherlands, and this is reflected in many of the projects in this book which include the gardens and squares of West 8, the Museumsplein in Amsterdam, the town planning in Zutphen or Apeldoorn. The examples have all been published in different contexts in Topos, but this is the first time that they have been collated to provide an illuminating overview of contemporary Dutch landscape architecture.

Between 2005 and 2008, Niedermayr traveled in Iran, visiting Tehran, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz and other smaller cities and historical sites. His travels spurred the undertaking of a new series examining Iranian architecture in its cultural and historical context. The resulting photographs reveal a wild mingling of east and west as older buildings jostle with colorful billboards, beltways and apartment blocks that look as if they could be located anywhere in the world. As with Niedermayr's famous winter landscapes, the majestic, pale color composition of these photographs transports them far beyond mere documentary, towards a sense of tremendous scale and implied political narrative.

Moving beyond the image wars, ICONOCLASH shows that image destruction has always coexisted with a cascade of image production, visible in traditional Christian images as well as in scientific laboratories and the various experiments of contemporary art, music, cinema, and architecture. While iconoclasts have struggled against icon worshippers, another history of iconophily has always been at work. Investigating this alternative to the Western obsession with image worship and destruction allows useful comparisons with other cultures, in which images play a very different role. DIY architect, publisher and pioneer of the self-build movement, Lloyd Kahn (born 1935) is a legend of the American counterculture. Influenced by Buckminster Fuller, in 1968 Kahn started building geodesic domes, and was an editor for Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth Catalog. In 1970 Kahn published his first book, Domebook One, followed the next year by the bestselling Domebook 2. In 1971, he bought land in Bolinas and built a geodesic dome (later to be featured in Life magazine), but he soon pursued other ways to build, resulting in the classic 1973 book "Shelter." Kahn published numerous self-build books over the ensuing decades, most recently "Tiny Homes on the Move" (2014). "Shelter Cookbook" is an exploration of Kahn’s now iconic publications by the Swiss architect Leopold Banchini (born 1981) - whose practice makes emphatic use of DIY architecture culture- and the German author and curator Lukas Feireiss (born 1977). It relates Kahn’s building philosophy to contemporary practices, recording Banchini and Feireiss’ personal search for unexpected relationships between historical documents and contemporary architectural projects. The large-format volume includes interviews, photospreads and archival material on self-building, and also includes a mycological investigation. "Shelter Cookbook" will inspire architects, designers, artists and counterculture cognoscenti alike with its positive vision of the possibilities and legacy of the self-build movement.
