Résumé:
Featuring almost a hundred years of dispatches from the Alps, ''Vintage Alpine Postcards'' celebrates Europe’s great mountain range. It takes us from men in bowler hats with stout ropes nonchalantly crawling over crevasses, through the gilded age of grand hotels and sleigh rides, to the modernist concrete infrastructure of mountaintop restaurants and cable-car stations. These postcards frame the changing way we’ve experienced landscape and leisure over more than a hundred years – from the intrepid to the banal, sublime to ridiculous and brutalist to kitsch. And postcards travel through time as well as space, and they arrive with messages from our former selves. Underlying the Alpenkitsch is a serious exposé of our relationship to nature and how we have carelessly misused the beauties of the natural world.

Résumé:
Books about architectural model-making as a discipline of its own are few and far between. The present publication therefore presents detailed portraits of around twenty model-making workshops in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, providing ready reference and giving architects easy access to information about modern methods of architectural model-making. The changes affecting the model-making profession in the age of computer-aided design are discussed and, in an introductory essay by writer and historian Ansgar Oswald, the role this centuries-old craft played in the context of European architecture from the Renaissance to the present day is portrayed. The book speaks up for architectural model-making as an indispensable stage in the design process and an expressive means of decision-making.

Résumé:
"This other Eden" is a captivating narrative of seven great gardens, beautiful canvases that represent not just pleasure grounds but a country's evolution. Showpieces of grand design, they are also barometers of social change; lasting reflections of intellectual endeavour, of religion and philosophy, science and technology, art and literature, from Robert Cecil's garden at Hatfield House, conceived by the famous botanist and plant-collector John Tradescant, who travelled widely to seek out unusual specimens, to Capability Brown, who 'improved' upon nature to create the archetypal English parkland; from Joseph Paxton, whose engineering feats at Chatsworth mirrored the great Victorian age of technology, to Getrude Jekyll, who turned back to nature and designed the English cottage garden renowned the world over.

Résumé:
In an age of digital cameras and computer renderings, the tradition of drawing and assembling an architectural sketchbook seems at once either willfully eccentric and or charmingly retrograde. But its profound importance to architecture and urban planning endures. Italian Cities and Landscapes is a compact and lovely sketch book created by architect William H. Fain during a six month fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. Exploring the Italian city and countryside by bicycle, Fain used colored pencil to sketch scenes of the street life, the magnificent landscapes, and the architectural marvels of Italy. Italian Cities and Landscapes shows that for the creative individual, documenting travels through drawing continues to be a valuable means of learning to see, understand, and design.

Have you ever wondered what your street was like hundreds of years ago? In this book you can follow the life of one such street. You will see it develop from a small Stone Age camp - changing over thousands of years - into a bustling riverside thoroughfare in the heart of a metropolis. This beautifully illustrated book brings fourteen key periods in history to life. You will see magnificent buildings go up and come down, new churches built on the site of ancient temples, wooden bridges destroyed and then remade in stone, and statues demolished, then unearthed many years later. You'll find out, too, how people lived long ago - the tools they used, what they wore, what they ate, and what they did all day.

Résumé:
"Civilization or the militarization of science?" With this typically hyperbolic and provocative question as a starting point, Paul Virilio explores the dominion of techno-science, cyberwar and the new information technologies over our lives . . . and deaths. After the era of the atomic bomb, Virilio posits an era of genetic and information bombs which replace the apocalyptic bang of nuclear death with the whimper of a subliminally reinforced eugenics. We are entering the age of euthanasia. These exhilarating bulletins from the information war extend the range of Virilio's work. "The Information Bomb" spans everything from Fukuyama to Larry Flynt, the Sensation exhibition of New British Art to space travel, all seen through the optic of Virilio's trenchant and committed theoretical position.

Résumé:
With Common Space, activist and architect Stavros Stavrides calls for a reconceiving of public and private space in the modern age. Stavrides appeals for a new understanding of common space not only as something that can be governed and open to all, but as an essential aspect of our world that expresses, encourages, and exemplifies new forms of social relations and shared experiences. He shows how these spaces are created, through a fascinating global examination of social housing, self-built urban settlements, street peddlers, and public art and graffiti. The first book to explicitly tackle the notion of the city as commons, Common Space, offers an insightful study into the links between space and social relations, revealing the hidden emancipatory potential within our urban worlds.

Résumé:
Riots are extraordinary events that have been recurring with increasing frequency and occupy a highly controversial space in the political imagination. Despite their often negative portrayals, it is undeniable that riots have played a pivotal role in the confrontation between authority and dissent. Recently, with the deepening crises of capitalism, racial violence, and communal tension, an 'age of riots' has powerfully begun. As master fictions of the sovereign nation-state implode, and the hegemonic silencing of the dispossessed reveals the cracks in governability, 'Nights of the Dispossessed: Riots Unbound' brings together artistic works, political texts, critical urban analyses, and research projects from across the world in an endeavor to 'sense,' chronicle, and think through recent riots and uprisings - evoking a phenomenology of the multitude and surplus population.
