Résumé:
Over the past 30 years, the district of Mãe Luíza in Brazil's northeastern city of Natal developed from a desolate favela into a functioning community. From the first humanitarian aid to construction of a gymnasium, this persistent process is outlined in short articles and essays in the second part of this illustrated volume. The documentation demonstrates how transformation was achieved step by step with the help of many, laying the groundwork for ongoing progress. Less crime, better education, and a fairer society – much has been accomplished and even more is possible for the future. A story by author Paulo Lins (“City of God”) tells the stirring tale of the establishment of the Brazilian favela Mãe Luíza. Fleeing drought and deadly heat, the people there fought for a piece of land to call their own, hoping for a better life. Thanks to their optimism and solidarity, their vision gradually took shape.

With Neri and Hu Design and Research Office, the Chinese avantgarde in architecture, research and teaching, product and interior design has arrived in Europe. This publication accompanies the exhibition "Reflective Nostalgia" presented at the Aedes Architecture Forum (Berlin), which aimed to highlight the way in which Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu examine the historical and the contemporary as well as the listed and the everyday and to transform them into new uses in a respectful and future-oriented manner. Their transdisciplinary design approach is in the DNA of the studio. The success of the broad spectrum of their work is reflected in numerous international awards. The exhibition installation featured architectural models, photographs and videos, as well as a selection of furniture, showcasing Neri and Hu's alternative reading of historical contexts, including all the contradictions and details, as well as the unexpected spatial compositions with which they respond.

Résumé:
This book presents fragments of nature—some of them mise en scène, others untouched by urban growth—on the periphery of the artificially illuminated infrastructure of large Asian cities. Unlike natural light, the lights of the big city do not follow any direction: the artificial suns comprised of sodium lamps, automobile headlights, and illuminated skyscrapers form a kind of “vernacular light” that makes the urban super-green alternate between the hyper-real and the surreal. The images in this publication celebrate this lush green as a sign of hope, but also pose the question of whether we can continue to take responsibility for this incandescence, considering the predicted climatic catastrophe. Never before have our cities been so bright—they will not be able to glow like this in the future. Taken between October 2007 and March 2008 in Hanoi, Jakarta, Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur,

Résumé:
Located in the Czech Republic, the city of Zlín is a curious example of civic planning in which domestic living, education and recreation were all geared towards a single goal : the profitability of the Bata shoe company, one of the first footwear manufacturers to operate globally. In spring 2009, a symposium initiated by Zipp/German-Czech Cultural Projects, in cooperation with The Brno House of Arts, the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín and the National Gallery in Prague, and attended by scholars and local experts, addressed the example of Zlín as a potential model for the future of urban planning and architecture. This anthology presents articles by architects, sociologists and urban theorists on the phenomenon that is Zlín. Plans, photographs, and film stills highlight the unique aesthetic qualities of this model city that complies with no architectural paradigm of the past century.

Résumé:
For Climate's Sake! sets itself the goal of conveying the knowledge revealed by current climate research in a manner that is both concise and appealing. It differs from other books on climate change principally in the way it is conceived as a visual reader that diliberately uses the effectiveness and power of the image to present the theme in a graphic way. Extensive series of images with large photographs and informative diagrams accompany well-researched essays on and around the themes of climate history, research and policy and thus offer an in-depth examination. The book provides insights into the history of the earth's climate and reveals the factors that are responsible for climate change. It poses questions and provides answers: why is the earth becoming warmer? What are the consequences we must reckon with? What can we do against this? Who determines the future?

Résumé:
Extensively covered by the media, debated by the governments of the world and claimed by vying religions, Israel is a remarkable case study for understanding the rise and fall of empires. By highlighting the country's historic architecture and its highly contentious ruins, Israeli photographer Shai Kremer (born 1974) questions how these sites figure today in the discourse of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the future of the nation. This publication invites viewers to consider new relationships between the histories and identities assembled and disassembled in the creation of modern Israel. As Kremer explains, “Israel is overloaded with sediments of past empires. More than half of the current IDF (Israel Defense Forces) strongholds rest on the ruins of military sites of former empires. The recycling of these spaces, from one conqueror to the next, shows how most empires tried to conquer and rule this land, with one similar outcome: they eventually failed.”

The Soviet Union was founded on a fairytale. It was built on 20th-century magic called 'the planned economy', which was going to gush forth an abundance of good things that the penny-pinching lands of capitalism could never match. And just for a little while, in the heady years of the late 1950s, the magic seemed to be working. "Red Plenty" is about that moment in history, and how it came, and how it went away; about the brief era when, under the rash leadership of Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Union looked forward to a future of rich communists and envious capitalists, when Moscow would out-glitter Manhattan, every Lada would be better engineered than a Porsche and sputniks would lead the way to the stars. And it's about the scientists who did their genuinely brilliant best to make the dream come true, to give the tyranny its happy ending.

Mouritsen takes readers on a comprehensive tour of seaweed, describing what seaweeds actually are (algae, not plants) and how people of different cultures have utilized them since prehistoric times for a whole array of purposes —as food and fodder, for the production of salt, in medicine and cosmetics, as fertilizer, in construction, and for a number of industrial end uses, to name just a few. He reveals the vast abundance of minerals, trace elements, proteins, vitamins, dietary fiber, and precious polyunsaturated fatty acids found in seaweeds, and provides instructions and recipes on how to prepare a variety of dishes that incorporate raw and processed seaweeds. Approaching the subject from not only a gastronomic but also a scientific point of view, Mouritsen sets out to examine the past and present uses of this sustainable resource, keeping in mind how it could be exploited for the future.
