Map is a guide to potential actions in the built environment, a folded encyclopedia of the possible, a topography of ideas, or a poster on the wall.

Résumé:
The Allied Arts investigates the history of the complex relationship between craft and architecture by examining the intersection of these two areas in Canadian public buildings. Sandra Alfoldy explains the challenges facing the development of the field of public craft and documents the largely ignored public craft commissions of the post-war era in Canada. The book highlights the global concerns of material, scale, form, ornament, and identity shared by architects and craftspeople. It also examines the ways in which the allied arts are mediated by institutions and the fragility of craft commissions once considered an integral part of the built environment.

Résumé:
Space and place have become central to analysis of culture and history in the humanities and social sciences. Making Place examines how people engage the material and social worlds of the urban environment via the rhythms of everyday life and how bodily responses are implicated in the making and experiencing of place. The contributors introduce the concept of spatial ethnography, a new methodological approach that incorporates both material and abstract perspectives in the study of people and place, and encourages consideration of the various levels—from the personal to the planetary—at which spatial change occurs.

Résumé:
Picturing Mexico: From the Camera Lucida to Film explores the early artistic and cultural factors that contributed to the emergence of film in a heterogeneous media environment at the turn of the 20th century. Focusing his attention upon lithographs and photographs of Mexico created by European and North American visitors, Fullerton argues that the introduction of the illustrated press and the popular photographic album towards the end of the 19th century transformed the private space of the printed page. He contends that the dynamics of the moving image were informed by the convergence of these media forms.

Todd Presner, David Shepard, and Yoh Kawano put digital humanities theory into practice to chart the proliferating cultural records of places around the world. A digital platform transmogrified into a book, it explains the ambitious online project of the same name that maps the historical layers of city spaces in an interactive, hypermedia environment. The authors examine the media archaeology of Google Earth and the cultural–historical meaning of map projections, and explore recent events—the “Arab Spring” and the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster—through social media mapping that incorporates data visualizations, photographic documents, and Twitter streams.

Résumé:
Over the last half century, Bernard Lassus has developed his theory and practice of the conditions that enable our appropriation of urban spaces. Light, colour and movement are the main elements forming his art installations and urban spatial designs. In this previously unpublished analysis, art historian Stephen Bann scrutinises Lassuss professional and creative trajectory as it intersects with other leading artistic and intellectual figures, from kinetic art to garden design and landscapes. Appearances in the everyday environment are crucial in this reflection on the meaning of being an integral part of the shifts of contemporary society, in architecture, urbanism and beyond.
