Résumé:
Helin & Co, one of Northern Europe's leading architectural firms, has been a key player in Helsinki's transformation into a modern metropolitan region for over 20 years. They understand architecture as work for the future combining the human scale (‘Heart’) with a constant engagement with the urban space on the waterfront (‘Horizon’). The firm works in a context-sensitive and resource-efficient manner. The focus is on combining functionality, urban vibrancy and (archi-)tectonic precision. Three key projects also highlight this approach in the exhibition: Kamppi Centre – a networked urban quarter in the heart of Helsinki with mobility hubs, cultural and residential areas; Kalasatama Centre – a new urban centre at the former harbour that combines density and sea views; Sello District Centre in Espoo – a multifunctional centrepiece with a library, music school and concert hall. Together, they form places that interweave living, working and culture in Helsinki into an open, maritime urban experience.

Résumé:
This publication collects and preserves the ideas put forward during the symposium "A Model: Reimagining Museums," which took place at Mudam – The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg, in June 2024.?The convening explored the mission of museums today and examined how contemporary institutions can continue to serve as sources of culture, preservation, education, and community in the future. The symposium marked the final chapter of a broader program dedicated to examining the museum as a model. The series was introduced by "A Model," a three-part exhibition curated by Bettina Steinbrügge that reflected on the role of the museum in the twenty-first century, reaffirming the need to consider the institutions a dynamic, living place, sensitive and receptive to contemporary debates. It also considered the possibilities that arise when museum collections are reimagined as active and performative environments. More than thirty artists were involved – some conceiving new commissions, others responding to works in Mudam’s collection.

Architecture, as we know it, is in crisis. The authority of architects is crumbling, their methods no longer tenable. In a highly critical introspection, architect and writer Reinier de Graaf explores the tough choices ahead and the course of action that must follow. ''Architecture Against Architecture'' demands we rethink both how and why we build. With wit and insight, De Graaf lays out the future of the profession, challenging readers to question the fundamental assumptions of the discipline. How do we end the feudal veneration of starchitects? When will architects finally recognize that it is in their own best interest to unionize? Why aren’t more practices collectively owned? Why do so many architects over sixty-seven refuse to retire? How do we stop buildings from being copy-righted? What will remain of architecture after AI? What can prevent iconic structures from being embroiled in money laundering? And the vital question: What projects should architects refuse on moral grounds?

Where has our planet come from, and what lies beneath its surface? How have we come to understand its past and present environments, and what does its future look like? Thanks to scientists who study its rocks, fossils, and landscapes, we know that Earth history spans over four and a half billion years. But there is still much more to discover. This ''Little History'' recounts our planet’s fascinating past and the science which has shaped how we think about it. Taking us from the formation of the Solar System, the evolution of our atmosphere and oceans, and the first signs of life, through to dinosaurs, mammals, and the eventual arrival of humans, Woodward shows us the full span of Earth history, from deep time to the Anthropocene. Along the way, we learn about the major breakthroughs of the pioneering scientists who have unearthed our planet’s secrets. From fossils of ancient creatures to the very air we breathe, this is the essential guide to our world.

Résumé:
Museums have become the preeminent building type for the expression of new architectural ideas. Holl's expansion of the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art achieves a fusion of architecture with landscape that redefines the boundaries of the museum-going experience while creating one of the most unorthodox and breathtakingly beautiful examples of recent museum design. Holl's structure emerges from the landscape as five interconnected glass structures or "lenses," which both draw light into the building and serve to accentuate the museum's sculpture garden, providing both new spaces and angles of vision. Executed through close collaboration with museum curators and artists, the building achieves a dynamic and supportive relationship between art and architecture. Combining an in-depth critical assessment by the eminent architectural historian Jeffrey Kipnis, a generous selection of the architect's preliminary watercolor studies for the museum expansion, and breathtaking photography, this volume will be an essential reference for anyone concerned with the future of architecture and museum design.

Résumé:
Only a few decades ago, Dubai was merely a tranquil Bedouin city. Today, the skyline of a boomtown rises from the desert. Reports about it are distinguished by superlatives. In particular, reports regardign new buildings in this country of little shadow overshadow anything that has been constructed before. Burj Al Arab, currently the world's largest luxury hotel, with its also technically unique facade is just one example of these buildings. Palm Project or Hydropolis, both visionary, artificially created islands belong to the same category. As does the construction of the world's highest apartment tower. Dubai presents a kind of preview of the ultramodern - a trend that is also reflected in the design of various restaurants, hotels and label stores. Representing the most important gate to the Middle East, this city is primarily one thing: thoroghly international and with incredible power on its way to a new future. This is the theme of this book, with chosen objects and crucial information concerning them.

Résumé:
"You cannot shake hands across a nine meter wall", says a Palestinian pensioner who lives in the shadow of the Separation Barrier currently being built by the Israeli government. Since October 2003, photographer Kai Wiedenhöfer, who has been documenting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for more than a decade, has been meeting with inhabitants of the Occupied Palestinian Territories living in the path of the barrier. Every six months, he has been returning to the territories to document the construction of the 650 kilometers of walls, fences, ditches and earth mounds, which form the border between the State of Israel and a future Palestinian entity. The series of images in this book are all 6 x 17 cm panoramics which depict the wall and fragments of life in its shadow. In 1989, the Berlin-based photographer documented the fall of the wall in his own city. Recent German history has convinced Wiedenhöfer that separation barriers offer no realistic solutions to political conflict.

Résumé:
Amid the cultural and political ferment of 1960s France, a group of avant-garde architects, artists, writers, theorists, and critics known as "spatial urbanists" envisioned a series of urban utopias, phantom cities of a possible future. The utopian "spatial" city most often took the form of a massive grid or mesh suspended above the ground, all of its parts (and inhabitants) circulating in a smooth, synchronous rhythm, its streets and buildings constituting a gigantic work of plastic art or interactive machine. In this new urban world, technology and automation were positive forces, providing for material needs as well as time and space for leisure. In this first study of the French avant-garde tendency known as spatial urbanism, Larry Busbea analyzes projects by artists and architects (including the most famous spatial practitioner, Yona Friedman) and explores texts (many of which have never before been translated from the French) by Michel Ragon, the influential founder of the Groupe International d'Architecture Prospective (GIAP), Victor Vasarely, and others.

Résumé:
Grant Jones, founding principal of the noted landscape architecture firm Jones – Jones, has practiced ecological design for more than 30 years and has been a pioneer in river planning, scenic highway design, zoo design, and landscape aesthetics. The latest addition to our successful Source Books in Landscape Architecture series, Grant Jones/Jones – Jones ILARIS, focuses on Jones's "green print" plan for Puget Sound in Washington State. Working in collaboration with the Trust for Public Lands and using new GIS technology, Jones – Jones developed the software tool ILARIS. This CAD-like tool helps to evaluate the aesthetic resources of landscape regions and is used as a basis for future planning. The Puget Sound model can be applied to other landscapes at risk. Including an interview with Grant Jones, critical essays discussing his work, as well as numerous diagrams, plans, and photographs, Grant Jones/Jones – Jones ILARIS is a thorough study of an important project.
