Résumé:
German photographer Thomas Ruff is closely associated with the city of Düsseldorf though his studentship under Bernd and Hilla Becher, but he actually hails from the small town of Zell am Harmersbach, in the Black Forest. Ruff's Interior series, made during his student days between 1979 and 1983, is located there. Taken in the homes of his family and friends, and photographed in sober black and white, it draws the viewer immediately into the atmosphere of 1960s and 1970s Germany, showing the farmhouse in which Ruff's mother grew up, along with its barn, toolshed and silo, a young bull and nearby woodland paths. All of Ruff's Black Forest-related series are collected in this catalogue, along with two other series, Stars and Nudes.

Résumé:
Paulina Olowska's work demonstrates an interest on Communist Poland's fascination with Western consumerism and celebrates the spirit and stylish improvisations of the "Applied Fantastic"—a term coined by Polish writer Leopold Tyrmand in 1954, to describe the vernacular re-creations of Western styles. In her paintings, collages, and knitted works, Olowska incorporates text and graphics from found illustrations or images that have a decidedly "behind the Iron Curtain" look, while paying tribute to American Pattern and Decoration art of the 1970s and its use of non-traditional contemporary art mediums such as tiles and textiles. This publication is the first monograph to offer an overview of her work. It includes an interview with Adam Szymczyk and an essay by Jan Verwoert.

Résumé:
Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling is an analysis of Remix in art, music, and new media. Navas argues that Remix, as a form of discourse, affects culture in ways that go beyond the basic recombination of material. His investigation locates the roots of Remix in early forms of mechanical reproduction, in seven stages, beginning in the nineteenth century with the development of the photo camera and the phonograph, leading to contemporary Remix culture. This book places particular emphasis on the rise of Remix in music during the 1970s and '80s in relation to art and media at the beginning of the twenty-first Century. Navas argues that Remix is a type of binder, a cultural glue - a virus - that informs and supports contemporary culture.

Résumé:
This is the second part of a major theoretical work by Patrik Schumacher, which outlines how the discipline of architecture should be understood as its own distinct "system of communication." "Autopoeisis" comes from the Greek and means literally self-production; it was first adopted in biology in the 1970s to describe the essential characteristics of life as a circular self-organizing system and has since been transposed into a theory of social systems. This new approach offers architecture an arsenal of general comparative concepts. It allows architecture to be understood as a distinct discipline, which can be analyzed in elaborate detail while at the same time offering insightful comparisons with other subject areas, such as art, science and political discourse

Résumé:
This book investigates Al Taylor’s drawings, which numbered over five thousand at the time of his death. It includes a chronological survey of Taylor’s drawings from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s, highlighting the combination of technical refinement, humor, and sensuousness that characterizes his works on paper. Reproductions of the works, which were inspired by such ordinary things as tin cans, pet s tains, and broomsticks, reveal the drawings’ minute details, nuanced shading, and playfully agile pencil lines. Texts explore how the rich and complex visual sensibilities of Taylor’s drawings resonate with that of late Renaissance and Baroque Old Masters. The book also examines Taylor’s innovative approach to process and materials, such as photocopier toner, with its intense black, and the extreme white of correction fluid.
