Résumé:
All Over the Map is Michael Sorkin’s urgent response to radical changes in contemporary architecture and the built environment since 9/11. Characteristically polemic, incisive and energetic, these essays explore pressing questions of architectural and urban design, and critical issues of public space and participation. From New York to New Orleans, the Amazon to Jerusalem, Sorkin brings a critical eye to bear on a sweeping range of subjects. Whether castigating the sorry performance of the architectural avant-garde post 9/11, considering the nature of place in globalized culture, or providing mock instructions for entering a high-security environment, these writings make a powerful and provocative case for architecture and urban design to re-engage with the lives and societies from which they have increasingly become detached.

Résumé:
Dobrovic in Dubrovnik traces the history of a project of avant-garde modern architecture constructed in the 1930s in the Mediterranean landscape of the south Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Architects Krunoslav Ivaniin and Ljiljana Blagojevic contribute comprehensive historical, theoretical and phenomenological readings of a highly specific venture in modern architecture (though with the usual universal aspirations)--the quintessentially modern villas, gardens and hotels built in Dubrovnik 70 years ago by the Serbian architect and urban planner Nikola Dobrovic (1897-1967). Confined to an area of about ten square miles and in use for only about ten years, the buildings are presented in this volume through previously unpublished original design drawings, black-and-white photographs from the 1930s and contemporary color photographs by Wolfgang Thaler.

Résumé:
Within the large number of places that comprise the fabric of today’s contemporary urban landscape, public interior venues are taking on an ever growing significance in the face of exterior spaces. Whether in terms of climate, security, leisure or well-being, interiors have naturally incorporated themselves into the daily urban itinerary as part of public activity. The intense social interaction that takes place within these public spaces is concentrated within bars and restaurants, home to flirtations and friendships, entertainment and relaxation, observers and the observed. “Ultimate Restaurant Design” presents over seventy contemporary venues that have been chosen for their innovative interior architecture. Taking in venues from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia, the projects are accompanied by full colour photography, detailed plans and insightful descriptions, making this a truly comprehensive survey of some of the most striking restaurant and bar interiors in the world today.

Résumé:
Housing speaks directly to the challenges that define our times: social inequality, ecological crisis, displacement, asylum, migration and privatization. Framing the neo-liberal context as a defining condition of contemporary housing, International Case Studies consists of two parts: a series of essays by authors from architecture, anthropology, economy and literature, and an “atlas” of global housing that takes neo-liberalism as its starting point. The essays shed light on the challenges and conflicts of contemporary housing production from Andrew Herscher’s research on the politics of “blight” in Detroit to Justin McGuirk’s text on domesticity as data and universal housing questions eclipse by the “Internet of Things.” Conceptualized and compiled by architectural critic-historian Anne Kockelkorn and Columbia professor Reinhold Martin, the illustrated “atlas” presents 33 housing examples rarely seen together and invites readers to think of housing as an unstable constellation evolving within the power relations of territorial processes.

Résumé:
This book is a timely and engaging introduction to the way that artists working in all media think about craft. Workmanship is key to today's visual arts, when high 'production values' are becoming increasingly commonplace. Yet craft's centrality to contemporary art has received little serious attention from critics and historians. Dispensing with clichéd arguments that craft is art, Adamson persuasively makes a case for defining craft in a more nuanced fashion. The interesting thing about craft, he argues, is that it is perceived to be 'inferior' to art. The book consist of an overview of various aspects of this second-class identity, supplementarity, sensuality, skill, the pastoral, and the amateur. It also provides historical case studies analyzing craft's role in a variety of disciplines, including architecture, design, contemporary art, and the crafts themselves. Thinking through Craft will be essential reading for anyone interested in craft or broader visual art.

Résumé:
Gordon Matta-Clark has never been an easy artist to categorize or to explain. Although trained as an architect, he has been described as a sculptor, a photographer, an organizer of performances, and a writer of manifestos, but he is best known for "un-building" abandoned structures. In the brief span of his career, from 1968 to his early death in 1978, he created an oeuvre that has made him an enduring cult figure. In 2002, when Matta-Clark’s widow, Jane Crawford, put his archive on deposit at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, it revealed a new voice in the ongoing discussion of artist/architect Matta-Clark’s work: his own. Gwendolyn Owens and Philip Ursprung’s careful selection and ordering of letters, interviews, statements, and the now-famous art cards from the CCA as well as other sources deepens our understanding of one of the most original thinkers of his generation. This publication creates a multidimensional portrait that provides an opportunity for readers to explore and enjoy the complexity and contradiction that was Gordon Matta-Clark.

Résumé:
In eleven pointed and sometimes provocative conversations, architect and professor of architecture, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani uses a critique of contemporary urban planning to develop principles for reestablishing the discipline. In seven projects designed with these principles in mind, he shows how his vigorous reinterpretation of the field can be implemented and what a fresh start can look like. Magnago Lampugnani envisages a calm modern city that can measure itself against the historic city, while emphasizing sustainability and providing a home for a multifaceted and continually changing society.
