Résumé:
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando is a master of minimalism, known for his use of simple materials, his light-filled interiors, and his respect for the natural environment in which he works. This handsome book celebrates Ando's Stone Hill Center at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, his first museum project set within a rural American landscape. Celebrated photographer Richard Pare records Ando at his best, capturing the play of light across the cedar entry, the shimmering woodlands reflected in the large gallery windows, the lush meadow grasses juxtaposed with sharply angled walls. Michael Webb's essay provides context for the Clark building, tracing Ando's career from his early work in Japan to his iconographic Church of the Light in Osaka (1989) to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (2002).

Résumé:
Bitterfeld’s county museum, Kreismuseum Bitterfeld, contains a black box with herbaria dating from 1931. This collection, compiled by botanist Hans Weber, is an inventory of the flora gathered in the nearby Goitzsche region, a forested area of floodplain. It was not long before the plant life collected here was forced to give way to society’s demand for brown coal. Taking the herbaria as its starting point, this book interweaves stories about Bitterfeld’s energy-defined landscape with the modern legacy of the Bauhaus. Using archival documents, physical interventions, and field studies, the book proposes a new reading of the Bauhaus’s modernist motto ”Light! Air! Sun!“ recast as ”Heat, Breath, Growth“. The book thus points up the downside of resource extraction and environmental destruction in the ”clean modern age“, while also identifying movements in search of a nature-based culture characterized by care and stewardship.

Résumé:
By United Nations estimates, 60 percent of the world's population will be urban by 2030. With the increasing speed of urbanization, especially in the developing world, scholars are now rethinking standard concepts and histories of modern cities. "The Spaces of the Modern City" historicizes the contemporary discussion of urbanism, highlighting the local and global breadth of the city landscape. This interdisciplinary collection examines how the city develops in the interactions of space and imagination. The essays focus on issues such as street design in Vienna, the motion picture industry in Los Angeles, architecture in Marseilles and Algiers, and the kaleidoscopic paradox of post-apartheid Johannesburg. They explore the nature of spatial politics, examining the disparate worlds of eighteenth-century Baghdad, nineteenth-century Morelia, Cold War-era West Berlin, and postwar Los Angeles. They also show the meaning of everyday spaces to urban life, illuminating issues such as crime in metropolitan London, youth culture in Dakar, "memory projects" in Tokyo, and Bombay cinema. Informed by a range of theoretical writings, this collection offers a fresh and truly global perspective on the nature of the modern city. The contributors are Sheila Crane, Belinda Davis, Mamadou Diouf, Philip J. Ethington, David Frisby, Christina M. Jiménez, Dina Rizk Khoury, Ranjani Mazumdar, Frank Mort, Martin Murray, Jordan Sand, and Sarah Schrank.

"Leaf plan" will illustrate comprehensive design approaches to address climate change, urban metabolism, temporary uses, landscape multifunctionality, cohabitation through new modes of urban design based on criteria of flexibility and adaptability. Trento is the experimental territory where the innovative process, methodologies and theoretical reflection have been tested above the framework of the three-year research project "TUT Trento Urban Transformation". The book is structured around the five challenges (Ecological, Accessible, Smart, Welcoming and Beauty) proposed by the TUT research group for the Trento Leaf Plan, the new metabolic plan for the city of Trento. Beside the innovative field-test experimentations, the holistic methodological approach proposed by the book will be transferable and adapted in other metropolitan contexts to enhance the urban ecological transition. The publication, edited by the TUT research group, will include theoretical essays, critical selection of reference projects, operational tools, and interviews with experts in ecological transition, sustainable mobility, co-design approach, sharing, and urban resilience.

Résumé:
How do the living maintain relations to the dead? Why do we bury people when they die? And what is at stake when we do? In "The dominion of the dead", Robert Pogue Harrison considers the supreme importance of these questions to Western civilization, exploring the many places where the dead cohabit the world of the living-the graves, images, literature, architecture, and monuments that house the dead in their afterlife among us. This work devotes particular attention to the practice of burial. Harrison contends that we bury our dead to humanize the lands where we build our present and imagine our future. As long as the dead are interred in graves and tombs, they never truly depart from this world, but remain, if only symbolically, among the living. Spanning a broad range of examples, from the graves of our first human ancestors to the empty tomb of the Gospels to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Harrison also considers the authority of predecessors in both modern and premodern societies. Through inspired readings of major writers and thinkers such as Vico, Virgil, Dante, Pater, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Rilke, he argues that the buried dead form an essential foundation where future generations can retrieve their past, while burial grounds provide an important bedrock where past generations can preserve their legacy for the unborn.

Résumé:
Preserved buildings and historic districts, museums and reconstructions have become an important part of the landscape of cities around the world. Beginning in the 1970s, Tokyo participated in this trend. However, repeated destruction and rapid redevelopment left the city with little building stock of recognized historical value. Late twentieth-century Tokyo thus presents an illuminating case of the emergence of a new sense of history in the city’s physical environment, since it required both a shift in perceptions of value and a search for history in the margins and interstices of a rapidly modernizing cityscape.

Résumé:
The Genovese architect Renzo Piano has designed a museum building — the Zentrum Paul Klee on the outskirts of Bern. Piano was convinced from the outset that he would find the answers to his own questions in the art of Paul Klee. The Center, says Piano, is dedicated to the “poet of silence,” and thus it was only fitting to consider building a museum that would speak softly. Renzo Piano was also inspired by the identity of the location and the gentle, undulating lines of the terrain. The Zentrum Paul Klee rises upward in the form of three hills connected by a 150-meter-long thoroughfare, the “Museumsstrasse” within the museum complex. It is a harmonious yet prominent landscape sculpture featuring a steel construction that supports the roof. In this documentation, Benedikt Lodererprovides a precisely detailed description of Renzo Piano’s architectural idea. With the aid of numerous photographs, design sketches, plans, and models, this book presents an image of a building and its architectural history.
