Résumé:
In a time when an estimated 1.2 billion people across the world lack access to secure housing, how are cities working to empower and promote the inclusion of all, irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity, disability and economic status? How is affordable housing bridging economic gaps across different social, political and cultural geographies, particularly for the 900 million individuals who live in slums? This volume explores the interface of social justice and city making through comparative discussions from Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe, as well as North, Central and South America. The thirty-six essays in this collection include conversations with influential administrators and civic leaders such as Somsook Boonyabancha and Jaime Lerner, with commentaries on transformative initiatives such as “Child Friendly Cities,” and “Women for the World,” and case studies of exemplary projects by globally known architects and planners such as Alejandro Aravena and MVRDV.

Résumé:
War has entered the cities. Since September 11, 2001 at the latest, it has become apparent that this is the case not only in Jerusalem and the Middle East, but also in Western metropolises. This book presents a thorough investigation of the current situation in Jerusalem from a trilateral perspective: Israeli, Palestinian, and international experts air their views. The discussion centers on the production and use of urban space under the conditions created by the conflict, including, for example, the so-called security fence, urban enclaves, exclaves, the approach to monuments and no-man’s-land, and the instrumentalization of infrastructures, which leads to the crass juxtaposition of highly developed and impoverished urban spaces. The conflict, however, does not bring with it destruction and violence alone, but also exhibits ambivalent effects and, along with them, new cultural and urban realities. Jerusalem has become a prototype in the age of new urban violence.

Résumé:
One of the most influential Marxist theorists of the twentieth century, Henri Lefebvre pioneered the study of the modern state in an age of accelerating global economic integration and fragmentation. Shortly after the 1974 publication of his landmark book The Production of Space, Henri Lefebvre embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his career: a consideration of the history and geographies of the modern state through a monumental study that linked several disciplines, including political science, sociology, geography, and history. State, Space, World collects a series of Lefebvre’s key writings on the state from this period. Making available in English for the first time the as-yet-unexplored political aspect of Lefebvre’s work, it contains essays on philosophy, political theory, state formation, spatial planning, and globalization, as well as provocative reflections on the possibilities and limits of grassroots democracy under advanced capitalism.

This palm-sized book presents two of the most innovative structures of the modern age (and two of the most important art museums)in one package. The book highlights the New York Guggenheim, Frank Lloyd Wright's crowning achievement, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, recently designed to high acclaim by Frank O. Gehry. One half of the book contains 30 duotone photographs of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. These images were taken in 1959, shortly after the building's completion, by Ezra Stoller, one of the pre-eminent architectural photographers in the world and the founder of the renowned Esto architectural photography studio. Flipping the book over reveals the other half, which consists of 34 colour images of the Bilbao Museum, taken by Jeff Goldberg, an Esto architectural photographer and winner of the 1999 Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement from the American Institute of Architects.

Résumé:
The diverse works of architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (1661–1736) range from small architectural details to ambitious urban plans, from new parish churches to work on the monument of his age, St. Paul’s Cathedral. As a young man Hawksmoor assisted Christopher Wren and John Vanbrugh, emerging from these apprenticeships to design some of the most vigorous and dramatic buildings in England. In this book, architectural historian Vaughan Hart presents a fresh view of Hawksmoor’s built and planned work. In addition, Hart offers the first coherent explanation of Hawksmoor’s theory of architecture. The book explains why Hawksmoor’s buildings look the way they do, what contemporary events influenced his work, and how such ancient buildings as Solomon’s temple and Mausolus’s tomb inspired him. Underscoring the unique qualities of the architect’s accomplishments and aspirations, Hart establishes with new clarity Hawksmoor’s vital role in the development of English architecture.

Hans Wegner’s sophisticated chair designs, paragons of the midcentury-modern style, are beloved and imitated the world over, but scant few are familiar with his masterly watercolors. Wegner often used the medium to finish and finalize the drawings made in his workshop. Although woodworking and watercolor were both increasingly considered traditional in the New Media Age, Wegner’s artistic temperament saw him use both these mediums to boundary-breaking effect in his search for the perfect chair. "Watercolors by Hans J. Wegner" showcases his watercolors in thematic chapters, delving into the artistic dimensions of his design studio. Beyond illustrations of some of his notable chair models, the featured watercolors also highlight his lighting fixtures and complete room designs. They are interpreted by Anne Blond, director of the future Wegner Museum in Denmark and author of Wegner’s biography on the centennial anniversary of his birth in 2014.

''The Interiors of Social Media'' explores the relationship between architecture, interiors, and social media, guiding us through today's digital landscape to reveal where the virtual and physical worlds meet. From influencer bedrooms and gaming setups to humanitarian shelters, pet influencer homes, and porn rooms, Javier Fernández Contreras reveals how social media does not merely depict interiors, but actively scripts new spatial types: homes that are both private and hyper-public, domestic yet performative, and material yet algorithmic. By mapping platform spatialities and tracing the themes that connect them, he examines interiors as sites of consumerism, display, and mediatization - environments that expose the ethical, political, and ecological implications of 21st-century digital culture. Drawing on architecture, media studies, and digital humanities, «The Interiors of Social Media » offers a critical lens on how online interactions are woven into everyday life and invites us to rethink architecture in the age of the algorithm.

Résumé:
Candida Höfer’s works have something timeless about them, and opera is perhaps the most timeless cultural delight. Having dedicated a photographic series to the cathedrals of knowledge that are libraries, Höfer in her most recent cycle captures opera houses, the palaces of performing arts. Höfer’s earlier pictures of public spaces—libraries, lecture halls, museums, meeting rooms—forever devoid of people, made us sense the presence of those absent. Her opera photographs take us one step beyond: empty foyers, orchestras, stages, wings, and boxes make us imagine both the protagonists—performers and audience—and the fictitious figures, plots, and places that populate these venues during a night at the opera. In her most recent publication Candida Höfer portrays two Paris opera houses that are exemplary for their age and time: the neoclassicist Palais Garnier (1875), original Phantom of the Opera site, and the modern-style Opéra Bastille (1989).

Résumé:
Mark Hinshaw has a proposition for Americans: Come out of your bunker, throw open the gate, and meet the neighborhood. True Urbanism, his passionate and highly readable appeal for re-engagement with city life, celebrates the growing number of people who reject sterile, paint-by-numbers subdivisions in favor of rich, vibrant, and often unpredictable urban neighborhoods. Through a series of fascinating case studies, this volume demonstrates how cities can create mixed-use districts dense enough to support a variety of locally owned businesses, lively street life, and cultural institutions, while also outlining design guidelines that allow for architectural creativity and regulations that promote housing development for every income and age level. Now that the dust has settled from the late-twentieth-century development boom, this vivid account of cities large and small will show communities how to shed their lingering antiurban tendencies in favor of embracing density as destiny.
