Résumé:
This issue of Mousse explores the ways in which concerns surrounding exhibition display and elements derived from exhibition architecture have been appropriated by contemporary artworks and art practices, and how artistic modes and attitudes have played a significant role in shaping the lexicon of exhibition design. We asked a diverse pool of guest contributors — artists, curators, writers, art and architecture critics — to select illuminating cases of cross-pollination, and to compile extended captions for their chosen images. Many more images are interspersed in the issue, and captioned in groups every few pages. The ordering is not chronological, nor by any means hierarchic. Mousse 61 is a partial mood board for this analysis of a significant and special relationship.

The changes which Information Technology has brought to all areas of our lives have been dramatic. Even in architecture it´s influence has been far-reaching, creating new processes opening up exciting new prospects. In this book, Peter Eisenman, Derrick de Kerckhove, and Antonino Saggio write boldly on the challenges which now face young architects. The IT Revolution offers opportunities which were previously undreamt of, but at the same time, danger lurks in the realm of virtuality with its implication of unlimited possibilities. Furio Barzon uses examples from contemporary architecture to underscore the three text contributions and also places them in the context of state of the art technology and future developments.

Résumé:
People involved in architecture need to be familiar with construction methods in order to be in control of their designs. New technical requirements impact on our buildings and call for up-to-date specialist knowledge, which leads to new forms of architecture. This handbook uses clearly comprehensible 3D isometric diagrams to introduce the world of contemporary construction, from concept through to the detail; photographs are used to illustrate the content. The three main chapters deal with the structure, the building envelope, and the fit-out, starting with a clear introduction to the construction principles of modern building methods. Using drawings of selected built examples at scales of 1:10 and 1:20, a deeper examination of details is possible.

Résumé:
Are they frivolous or practical? Follies are buildings constructed primarily for decoration, but they suggest another purpose through their appearance. In this book, Celia Fisher describes follies in their historical and architectural context, looks at their social and political significance, and highlights their relevance today. She explores follies built in protest, follies in Oriental and Gothic styles, animal-related follies, waterside follies and grottoes, and, finally, follies in glass and steel. Featuring many illustrations, from historical paintings to contemporary photographs and prints, and taking in follies from Great Britain to Ireland, throughout Europe, and beyond, this book is an amusing and informative guide to fanciful, charming buildings.

Résumé:
Since its founding in 2005, the Centre for Research Architecture (CRA) at Goldsmiths, University of London, has brought together a diverse group of architects, artists, urbanists, geographers, lawyers, scientists, journalists and activists to develop research methodologies and investigative techniques to address contemporary spatial politics. Militant Media, the second volume in CRA’s series of publications, engages with the ethical and political implications of media and technology in relation to contemporary conflicts. In doing so, it also reflects upon the changing role of media in justice and human rights campaigns, examining a range of topics from the use of images in campaigning to the investigative potential of digital materials. In addition to critical and theoretical reflections, Militant Media offers a wide range of practice-based projects that have developed oppositional modes of representation and created new aesthetic strategies and tools.

Résumé:
This publication explores the unwritten history of city-building in the Arctic over the last 100 years. Spanning northern regions of North America, through Greenland, Svalbard to Russia, this is the first book to provide a truly circumpolar account of historical and contemporary architecture and urbanism in the Arctic – and it shows how the Arctic city offers valuable lessons for the post-colonial study of architectural and urban planning history elsewhere. Examining architects' and planners' designs for Arctic urban futures, it considers the impact of 20th-century models of urban design and planning in Arctic cities, and reveals how contemporary architectural approaches continue to this day to essentialize 'extreme' climate conditions and disregard the agency of Arctic city-dwellers – a critical perspective that is vital to the formulation of future design and planning practices in the region.

Résumé:
The original bald and unconvincing narrative that triggered this book is that put about by Alison and Peter Smithson in their 1981 Heroic Period of Modern Architecture, limiting modernism to 1915–1929. This fiction is re-contextualized with studies of iconic Bauhaus bald heads – Schlemmer, Itten, etc., such Literal Baldness is the subject of Part 1. Part 2 of Phenomenal Baldness unwinds the Bauhaus narrative put about by Walter Gropius, one that has held water for 100 years. Spin doctor Gropius manipulated his Bauhaus successes into a cornerstone of post WW2 modernism. Cracks in this story are now emerging along with the fact that Gropius was in hindsight, not a very good architect. Attacks on the Bauhaus like those by Rudolph Schwartz or Tom Wolf as well as a comprehensive list of Gropius hand-holders, and those edited out of his narrative are here explored. To conclude Gropius is compared to his contemporary Bruno Taut, a far more interesting and talented architect. This book like Peter Wilson’s previous "Bedtime Stories for Architects" or "Some Reasons for Traveling to Italy" is written in his unique anecdotal style, savoring Shandyisms and the quirks of history.

Résumé:
Karel Teige (1900–1951), one of the most important figures of avant-garde modernism of the 1920s and 1930s, influenced virtually every area of art, design, and urban thinking in his native Czechoslovakia. His "Minimum dwelling", originally published in Czech in 1932, and appearing now for the first time in English, is one of the landmark architectural books of the twentieth century. "The minimum dwelling" is not just a book on architecture, but also a blueprint for a new way of living. It calls for a radical rethinking of domestic space and of the role of modern architecture in the planning, design, and construction of new dwelling types for the proletariat. Teige shows how Gropius, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and others designed little more than new versions of baroque palaces, mainly for the new financial aristocracy. Teige envisioned the minimum dwelling not as a reduced version of a bourgeois apartment or rural cottage, but as a wholly new dwelling type built on the cooperation of architects, sociologists, economists, health officials, physicians, social workers, politicians, and trade unionists. The book covers many subjects that are still of great relevance. Of particular interest are Teige’s rejection of traditional notions of the kitchen as the core of family-centered plans and of marriage as the foundation of modern cohabitation. He describes alternative lifestyles and new ways of cohabitation of sexes, generations, and classes. The detailed programmatic chapters on collective housing remain far ahead of current thinking, and his comments on collective dwelling presage communal living experiments of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the communal facilities in contemporary condominium buildings and retirement communities. Translated and introduced by Eric Dluhosch.
