Résumé:
In "Wars and Capital", Éric Alliez and Maurizio Lazzarato propose a counter-history of capitalism to recover the reality of the wars that are inflicted on us and denied to us. We experience not the ideal war of philosophers, but wars of class, race, sex, and gender; wars of civilization and the environment; wars of subjectivity that are raging within populations and that constitute the secret motor of liberal governmentality. By naming the enemy (refugees, migrants, Muslims), the new fascisms establish their hegemony on the processes of political subjectivation by reducing them to racist, sexist, and xenophobic slogans, fanning the flames of war among the poor and maintaining the total war philosophy of neoliberalism.

Résumé:
As a master metaphor, the island has been a fecund source of inspiration across many domains. From More’s Utopia to Darwin’s evolutionary theory to Ungers’s archipelago, insights derived from “island thinking” are commonly extrapolated across diverse scales and fields. ''New Geographies 8'' proposes an epistemological pulse between, on the one hand, the ultimate loss of the exterior implied in planetary upscaling of territorial interpretations (toward an idea of the world as a whole) and, on the other hand, the need to rearrange new boundaries in an environment viewed through the process-oriented lens of ecology. An “atlas” of islands, New Geographies, 8 explores the new limits of islandness and gathers examples to reassert its relevance for design disciplines.

"Constructed narratives" brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Other essays discuss his engagement with geography, the urban environment, his approach to materiality, and architectural types. The presented projects include two public libraries and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, all in Washington D.C., a residential mixed-use building in New York, and a hybrid art-retail building in Beirut. Two of Adjaye’s current projects are also included.

With more than 20,000 words and terms individually defined, the Dictionary offers huge coverage for anyone studying or working in architecture, construction or any of the built environment fields. The innovative and detailed cross-referencing system allows readers to track down elusive definitions from general subject headings. Starting from only the vaguest idea of the word required, a reader can quickly track down precisely the term they are looking for. The book is illustrated with stunning drawings that provide a visual as well as a textual definition of both key concepts and subtle differences in meaning. Davies and Jokiniemi's work sets a new standard for reference books for all those interested in the buildings that surround us.

Résumé:
Providing hard data for trends that many perceive only vaguely and some deny altogether, Designing for Diversity reveals a profession rife with gender and racial discrimination and examines the aspects of architectural practice that hinder or support the full participation of women and persons of color. Given the traditional mismatch between diverse consumers and predominantly white male producers of the built environment, plus the shifting population balance toward communities of color, Anthony contends that improving the climate for nontraditional architects will do much to strengthen architecture as a profession. Practicing architects, managers of firms, students, and educators will learn how to create conditions more welcoming to a diversity of users as well as to designers.

Résumé:
Conceived in the 1960s, Walt Disney's original plans for his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) outlined a utopian laboratory for domestic technology, where families would live, work, and play in an integrated environment. Like many of his contemporaries, Disney imagined homes that would attend to their inhabitants' every need, and he regarded the home as a site of unending technological progress. This fixation on "space-age" technology, with its promise of domestic bliss, marked an important mid-twentieth-century shift in understandings of the American home. In A Small World, Davin Heckman considers how domestic technologies that free people to enjoy leisure time in the home have come to be understood as necessary parts of everyday life.

Architecture and Tourism examines the relationship between tourism and the built environment and shows how photography, film, and souvenirs have been deployed to help mediate and mythologize specific sites. It also explores how tourist itineraries, behavior, and literature support larger cultural objectives. Drawing upon case studies in the United States, Cuba, Ghana, Greece, France, Italy, Libya, Mauritius and Spain, Architecture and Tourism explores the touristic experience, representation and meaning of place within distinct cultural contexts. From the former sites of the slave trade on the Ghanean coast to the urban renewal of Old Havana and the honeymoon resorts in the Poconos, this book provides provocative insights into the practice of tourism and the conception of place.

Résumé:
New initiatives, ideas and products change the way we relate to one another and to our environment, as well as the way we define and fulfil our needs. They create opportunities for experimenting and learning, which can help our societies transition towards greater sustainability. But how can we implement transition in a useful way? This book examines the ways in which urban transition initiatives work, how they influence each other, and how they can make our cities thrive in a sustainable manner. Among others, it puts forward a view on the conditions that can aid accelerating change towards a sustainable low-carbon society, on possibilities for policy change, and on adaptive mechanisms that will improve decision making.
