Résumé:
Shaped by immigration, globalization, and demographics, our hub cities demonstrate what's best about Canada: our commitment to education, tolerance, culture, and innovation. Since the early 1990s, however, troubling trends have threatened to undermine our much-envied quality of life. Large urban centres are experiencing a widening gap between rich and poor, mounting levels of violence, and sprawl-induced health and environmental damage. Well-trained immigrants struggle to find suitable jobs and decent housing, while big-city schools suffer from underfunding. Local governments lack the resources and political clout to act decisively. In The New City, award-winning urban affairs writer John Lorinc offers a compelling vision of how to make Canada's metropolitan centres sustainable, livable, and competitive in a world dominated by powerful mega-cities. Incisive and broad-ranging, this is a timely reminder that all Canadians must confront urban issues if the country is to succeed in the tumultuous economy of the 21st century.

Résumé:
When Marjorie Hill graduated in 1920 as Canada's "first girl architect," she was entering a profession that had been established in Canada just 30 years earlier. For the Record, the first history of women architects in Canada, provides a fascinating introduction to early women architects, presented within the context of developments in both Europe and North America. Profiles of the women who graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto between 1920 and 1960 are illustrated with photographs of their work and include archival material that has never before been published. The final chapter on contemporary women in architecture showcases contributions by leading women architects across the country, from Halifax to Vancouver to Iqaluit. For the Record also provides current information on schools of architecture in Canada and includes a list of other resources to encourage young women who are thinking of pursuing careers in architecture. Foreword by Eva Matsuzaki.

Résumé:
Architectural design is not limited by geographical, economic or political boundaries. However, the majority of the architecture brought to the world's attention tends to be concentrated in a few countries and located in the wealthier nations of Europe and North America. This "Architectural Design" title seeks to present recent architecture that is situated beyond these familiar boundaries and outside the customary centres of architectural debate. It focuses on architecture that positively benefits from being at the periphery. By presenting work from countries as diverse as Iceland, Guinea, Canada, Portugal, Chile, New Zealand and India, it highlights buildings designed to respond to climatic extremes, remote sites and a broad range of social settings. It also identifies architects who are exploring the potential of materials and limited resources. This work has not only been sought out for attention, but is documented and connected through interviews with selected architects and international contributors who are designing, researching and building at the edge.

Résumé:
The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was established by His Highness the Aga Khan in 1977 to identify and encourage excellence in architecture and other forms of intervention in the built environment of societies where Muslims have a significant presence. The Award is given every three years and recognises all types of building projects that affect today’s built environment. The book presents the shortlist of 19 projects including the winners. What these projects in their variety across culturally diverse portions of the globe have in common is a commitment to design excellence despite constraints of budget, resources, climate, technology, and politics. They share this commitment as one of the necessary tools for societal betterment. The following five projects received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2010 : Wadi Hanifa Wetlands, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Revitalisation of the Hypercentre of Tunis, Tunisia; Madinat Al-Zahra Museum, Cordoba, Spain; Ipekyol Textile Factory, Edirne, Turkey; Bridge School, Xiashi, Fujian, China.

Résumé:
In ''The Immaterial'', French social philosopher André Gorz (1923–2007) argues that the economic boom that accelerated in the 1990s and crashed so spectacularly in 2008 was based largely on an immaterial consumption of symbols and ideas, as capitalism tried to overcome the crisis of the formally industrial regime by throwing itself into a new, so-called knowledge economy. In this volume, Gorz argues instead for the creation of a true knowledge economy. This economy would be based on zero-cost exchange and pooled resources, and knowledge would be treated as humanity's common property. Currently, in order to exploit knowledge and turn it into capital, the capitalist enterprise privatizes specialized knowledge and claims ownership through private licenses and copyright. But as Gorz shows, the traditional foundations of such capitalist economics have begun to crumble because of the immaterial nature of this new form of product, which makes it almost impossible to measure in monetary terms.
