The system of Iron Age hill forts, built across Britain from around 500 B.C., used natural promontories to survey the surrounding landscape; 2000 years later the British army used a similar system of watchtowers to survey the occupied territories of Northern Ireland. These high tech towers, constructed in the mid 1980s, primarily in the mountainous border region of South Armagh, were landmarks in a 30-year conflict in and over Northern Ireland, euphemistically called "The Troubles." The Towers were finally demolished between 2003 and 2007 as part of the British government's "demilitarization" program for Northern Ireland. For over a year Donovan Wylie photographed these towers, working entirely from an elevated position enabled by military helicopter, observing the observers and ensuring that their actions were not forgotten.

They depict the development of the continent's second largest river, and its cultural and economic significance for central and south-easthern Europe. The river as it is today is the theme of the artistic work by Iosif Kiraly (Bucharest)and Sophie Ristelhueber (Paris). In winter and spring 2004/2005 the two photographers travelled along the Danube, eastwards and westwards. Kiraly visited places that have been shaped by the industrial age. Ristelhueber followed the Danube along its last few miles to Sulina, the place where the Danube ends and the Black Sea begins.

Over the span of a single decade, VHS technology changed the relationship between privacy and entertainment, pried open the closed societies behind the Iron Curtain, and then sank back into oblivion. Its meteoric rise and fall encapsulated the dynamics of the '80s and foreshadowed the seismic cultural shifts to come after the Cold War. In the West, its advent deepened the trends of the age: individualism, consumerism, the fragmentation of society, and the consolidation of corporate power in the entertainment industry and its victory over the regulatory powers of the state. In the East, it encouraged new forms of socialization and economic exchanges, while announcing the gradual crumbling of government control over the imagination of the people. By the mid-1990s, the VHS format was displaced by the DVD. The DVD would eventually give way to streaming. Yet the cultural legacy of the videotape continues to inform our relationship to technology, privacy, and to entertainment.
